As already mentioned in the video description box, this train uses uses horizontally mounted cogwheels. As far as I know, this is the only one in the world. Normal cogwheel trains use vertically mounted cogwheels. The teeth of the cogwheel grab in the cog rail from the top. In the Pilatus case, there are two cogwheels that grab the cog rail from the side. The reason for that is the very steep gradient. Vertically positioned cogwheels would risk to skip out of the cog rail due to the steep gradient. Now, why don't al cog railways use this system? The main disadvantage is the much more complex switch (for the UK readers, the "point") construction. This is very well visible in the video where the downhill train passes the uphill train. In the usual case, with the vertically mounted cogwheels, changing the switch from one direction to the other, only requires moving the lips of the switch. The rails themselves and the cog rail do not need to move. With the horizontally mounted cogwheels, the whole track needs to move.
