What I love about this song is that because the place is a cabaret you'd think that the song is an invitation for men, but when she says "put down the knitting, the broom and the book" is clear that the song is encouraging women to take a break from the toil and trouble in their lives and have some fun, and possibly have some independence.

Do you think only women read books or hold a broom?. Read the history of Europe at that time. True women at that time were going through a cultural.revolution, wearing pants and smoking cigarettes. Nazi Germany tried to reverse all this free expression.

Liza was great in this but one segment definitely cemented her Oscar win: when she talks/Sings about Elsie and through her tears says "life is a cabaret old chum" you see her fear about what is eventually going to happen to Germany but get through it in the cabaret

Her mother would be so proud

Her mother may have been a tad jealous..... don't you think? However, that's just speculation on my part. Let me relay my experience, please. It was summer 1973 ( the year of release of Cabaret in England ) and my family, especially me were hosting an exchange student from Munich, Germany. Three weeks in the U.K. to be followed by three weeks in Germany. Well? the Cinema seemed a safe place for two 15 year old boys to spend a couple of hours, as an early event of the England leg. The ONLY reason I encouraged us to see Cabaret was because it was an X certificate, restricted to anyone of 18 years or over. This was in the hope of undiscovered and inexpensive thrills. Despite the obvious " faux pas " and perhaps the disappointment of the ( at least one ) testosterone fuelled young men, where what in fact we were viewing, was a classic and a masterpiece. We were both transfixed!

Well, I translated "Judy & Liza", a double biography, and the relationship was not easy. Said Liza once.: "I can't make it to your wedding, mamma but I promise I'll make the next one".

Nadie podra cantar este tema como Liza. Ella le da mucha fuerza, además de tener una privilegiada voz. Seguramente ha heredado el talento de su mamá. La han cantado otras artistas pero como ella nadie lo hará. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹❤❤❤❤❤❤

Sometimes I think of the awkward, coltish, overeager young girl who used to appear with her mother on TV and wonder how she transformed herself so completely in only a few years, but here she is.
