I have a beautiful penny rug table runner that I've had for years, a young girl who was learning "primitive crafts" made me this as I had expressed interest in them, it has the penny edging and then a beautiful farm scene complete with the saltbox homes, sheep and trees, it's like a painting done in wool. I treasure it. Thanks for sharing the ones you have in your store, that Gray one is a beauty.

Penny rugs are a thing that used to be made here in the UK too. I've seen examples from the 1700's in museums so I'm guessing that it was something that was shared long before the Civil War.
@cabincrafts2239 Жыл бұрын
Sometimes it took a while to get things across the pond back then, lol! I haven't heard of any 18th century examples here in America, but that doesn't mean a few didn't know about them. It really took off during our Civil War period. Thanks for sharing that info and for watching!

Oh my! How is it that I've not seen your videos until now?? I have made many, many penny rugs over the years and donated most of them to Ft. Nisqually Living History Museum as fundraising items. I was given more wool fabric than I could ever use and so shared it plus made the penny rugs. When I first started making them I did as much research as I could but there is little information on them. You do such neat things! I just love watching you guys crafting. Now, you said one of the first stitches little girls learned... it is my understanding that little guys learned all the basic things girls did until they got their big boy pants! After all, when the men went hunting, exploring and what not, they had to take care of themselves, right? So they needed these skills. Thank you guys for keeping these skills alive!

Kandye, I love your videos, especially the ones on needlework and fiber kinds of crafts. I will try the penny rug technique for sure. I’ve looked at some beautiful wool applique in magazines, but it seems like they want you to spend $10 for the magazine and then go get $200 worth of real wool, special thread, special needles, etc. I can’t afford that. Thank you for showing us ways to try this that are not so expensive, but still look nice. Could you make a video about the yo-yo quilts in the future? Or any kind of quilting? I’d enjoy one about how to sew patchwork with a hand needle and thread. Lynn in Hallsville, MO

My Nonna who was an incredible textile artist and seamstress, used my Nonno's navy blankets, he was from Spain, but moved to Sicily when he was 14. And made a gorgeous blanket. She did the circles, then crocheted around the circles and joined them in a huge, warm blanket. I wish I had it, but I remember making something similar when my girls were little and wanted blankets for their dolls. Maybe I'll make one like that. Thank you for bringing back that memory 😊 xx

one must also go back in time when we did not have paper towels or other pre fabricated items to purchase for clean up. therefor the penny table runner with the pen wiper on it...most likely yes it was a pen whip, that is why it is black or dark color, black ink would dry and disappear into the black cloth and you would have a clean pen to wright with and a neat desk. i am certain they made items faster and had fun comparing "buttons" with one another. big families needed some way to keep the little ones in line. :) different times. much simpler thank you for teaching us, and sharing this wonderful gift
