Looks great. I'd suggest not apologizing for having professional tools as a professional custom furniture maker buf keep the suggestions for how to do things for the hobbyist that might not have the thing you're using yet. Great series, I am learning a lot about veeneering through you. Keep making a thing :)

I may have tool envy at times but definitely not something to apologize for. You're really good at pointing out alternatives every time you bring out a Festool. So please don't ever change what you're doing. I'm here for skill building. You're a fantastic teacher and great at explaining!

One of the things I enjoy about the good woodworking KZbin channels (like this one!) is observing the way the maker uses the tools he (or she..I’m looking at YOU, Tamar!) has on hand for a joinery task, and thinking about how I could do that same thing with the tools I have on hand. Sometimes it leads me to a satisfying solution that I use in my own shop and making, and sometimes it makes me think, “Hmmm… I may need to buy that tool.” Either way, the process of watching Erik or Jason or Tamar make a thing and then meditating on it enriches my experience of woodworking, which is the ultimate goal. I don’t have a Festool anything. But never say never. That track-saw-router-thingy has my brain working in unexpected directions. BTW, Erik, love the new mug.
@SpiderMaowАй бұрын
That is exactly what I was thinking! I think it is sad for creators like Eric having to justify the tools they bought by hardworking making woodwork ! Let’s make woodworking a better place and leaving these ‘I know better’ frustrated/ Karen in their own place

I've watched most of your videos over the last view weeks. I love your no no nonsense approach to woodworking - very refreshing. Your never too old to learn something new. This old fart now has very sharp planes without a great deal of effort. One of many things learnt thanks to you. Laughter is good for the soul. Keep it up.

I am liking the contrast of the woods. Thanks for keeping that footage for the opening. I find the discussion of the part between you and your shopmate to also be valuable about the potential problems and how it would affect the overall piece. That said, you got lucky.

Australian here. I'm fairly certain the Australian Walnut veneer you've got is commonly referred to here as Queensland Walnut. Its not a true walnut and has a distinctive odour however its not Australian Blackwood. Australian Blackwood on the other hand comes from Victoria and Tasmania and is generally referred to here as Tassie Blackwood. Its also a relative of Hawaiian Koa. So I'd stick with the Aussie Walnut name as opposed to Blackwood. Loved the video as always 👍

Eric, why didn’t you use the track stop instead of blue tape to set your end point for the dado? Seems the physical stop,would be more accurate and consistent on both panels. I use the locking track end stop often and it works well for situations like this. Using the saw track with a router, is one of the main reasons I got the Festool track saw and OF router system, very versatile and accurate work. Cheers

Dumb question from a true veneer newbie: I noticed you used blue tape, then some kind of “holey” tape (I think it’s called veneer tape) on the other side, then removed the blue tape. Did you glue the seams of the veneer? Or is the veneer tape being used to hold the seams together while you glue the veneer panel to the substrate? In other words, can you explain the process when making veneer panels and glueing them to substrate? I hope the question makes sense. So sorry it’s a long question, but these are the things I struggle with (I warned you I’m a newbie….). Thank you SO much for your videos!!! I really do find inspiration and education from them. Everything from design to process. Your approach is understandable and your methods are very clear.

To my taste I would have veneered the internal face of the two exterior panels (a more wide and visible area), not the internal faces of those central dividers. Plus it would have give the illusion of two separate cabinets inside the main one. I repeat, just my taste, not a critique.

Some projects I'll "blindly" forge ahead knowing, roughly, what the end should look like, very sure on the first 40% and having some sort of clue - but not really - on how to do or what the last 60% will look like. I have skills - I'll get there. I do expect the project to speak to me, or at least inspire me to go in one direction vs another. Gets a wee bit scary when the project is silent on the matter for a bit. :^) However; this bites me in the arse when I tackle a project were I have never done that thing before (and really should buy plans) - like a telescope I started 20 years ago. Still not done. Guess it's on the 30 year plan now. :P

Are melamine boards somehow seen as a cheap material to build cabinets with over there in the USA? Why virtually no cabinet maker here in KZbin uses melamine boards? 😮
@skeery2605Ай бұрын
The melamine I see being used in videos outside of the states is a much better grade overall. The melamine we get at our big box stores is close to sawdust and glue. It just turns back to dust when you cut it and crumbles if you bump it around. We can get quality melamine from our hardwood dealers but it can be definitely more expensive than cabinet grade plywood.
