How does the Poly mix with the oil and thinner? Poly is a water base right? Oil and water don’t mix. I tried mixing bluebird poly with linseed and some mineral spirits no matter how much I would stir or shake the linseed and the spirits mixed but the bluebird poly and oil / spirits mix stacked on each other:( what am I doing wrong only thing I can think of it the brand blue bird?
@sonofsandwiches68923 сағат бұрын
You need to use an oil-based poly. They are sold in both water based and oil based. I did make the mistake of using water based poly once, and it separates in the jar I use within 10 minutes :) If using Varathane, you want the bronze colored can, not the blue one.

That quick turn to using tools that most of us don’t have was a huge let down. You promised simple, not complicated. Yeah sure, if you buy a shaper. Yes, I’m jealous, wish I was at the place where I can buy those. Hopefully some skilled craftsman who remembers not have thousands of dollars in tool will make a video where they truly make mortise and tenons less complicated. Felt like we got trapped in the web of a Festool and Shaper Origin snob. Just saying.

I have not researched this but I get the impression that if you decide on a brand to be loyal to, then buy a multi charger and 2-3 batteries, the total cost of the power tools will be significantly lower than the corded tools.....at least the smaller ones.
@jackspeer2127Күн бұрын
I started WW about 3 yr ago on the cheap. I decided that in order to get to know wood as well as tools I should work with only hand tools. Gradually I have acquired a nice collection of power tools. Still a lightly furnished shop but any power tool I lack, I have the skills to do it by hand. And that is very satisfying. btw Rex Kruger has no power tools and makes some mighty fine stuff. Found him just as Yankee Workshop was winding down.

So, your basic complaint with pre-mixed stains is the lack of choice of colors. First, his is a new project , not matching existing stained wood, there are dozens of cols available. Further, these colrs can be intermixed to match thousands of colors. Granted, this can be cumbersome, but then, so can playing around with tint colors by someone with little tinting knowledge.
@jackspeer2127Күн бұрын
don't buy an "F" clamp longer than about 16" from Harbor Freight. When you tighten, the rail is so flimsy it will bend under the pressure and spoil the clamp effectiveness by going WAY out of parallel

The problem with adding colorant to the varnish, or whatever protectorant clear coat, is that the color does not penetrate way into the fiber of the wood. If the finish piece is then scratched, the bare wood shows immediately. Also, if it is on a wear surface, such as a table top or floor, the color lessens as the finish coat wears thin!

Can i use something in place of Turpentine? The fumes are really bad
@sonofsandwiches68923 сағат бұрын
@kev5504 - yes both Poly and Thinner will have VOCs. (Volatile organic compounds) You should wear a respirator or else do finishing outside (in warm weather.) For me, my first coat is just Boiled Linseed oil only. This has no VOCs, but it does have its own smell. For my second and third coats, I use the formula I posted below. For last coat, I use Paste Wax - Encurtis mixes wax with more oil and thinner.

Jack plane + 2nd blade for roughing, 3-5 chisels, knife, 2-3 Japanese pull saws, hammer, eggbeater drill with bitty bits, 10" brace + a roll of bits, square, 4-in-1 screwdriver, 2-3 cheap water stones, a sharpening jig, a few clamps. Can throw it all in a cardboard box reinforced with packing tape. Use all that to make a bench. Spend $50 on a Yost screw to add a face or leg vise to your bench.

The difference between new and old for a beginner is that the beginner lacks the experience to know how to “choose wisely.” I submit that a beginner should buy a new, GOOD QUALITY plane and learn the basics. Then, after learning those basics, not being hampered by possible problems with an old plane, the woodworker can now begin collecting older planes with the experience to know what to buy and what to stay away from. By the way, WoodRiver makes excellent quality planes for less than Lie-Nielsen and Veritas. A good choice for a novice at a fair price.

Awesome video. I learned a lot. But how do we handle the bigger jobs with ply? Gluing anything to the surface, like the helper blocks, even if they are on brown paper, I'm going to be left with some nasty scarring afterwards. Any solutions for gluing up larger jobs made of ply, where gluing the helper blocks isn't an option?

confused with toner part. what makes up the wood finish wipe on poly and what elese?
@TyphusVonElder2 күн бұрын
so you are doing the part before the big box office. this is like saying "dont use Sherwin Williams premix paint for car paint..buy it from the guys they buy it from and mix it yourself" Just condition the wood, and stain, takes like 4 minutes, wipe it off with a rag and throw it away, when mass producing pieces or making signs for a customer, this is the easiest way. I also suck at mixing so thats why i just buy the premade stains

I sure hope someone interested in starting woodworking doesn’t think they need about 3 grand to get started ( as just about everyone below has said). My 11x16 shop is full of machines l purchased second hand , and of course I still want more, (like an 8” jointer instead of my 6” one 😁). Rule number one is don’t spend a ton of money ( for me 3k is a ton of money) on a hobby you may find is not for you. Start slowly and purchase as you go. Took me years to get a drum sander ( you guessed it, used) and I just LOVE it!

You make a great video, but having restored countless pieces of antique furniture I've hardly ever found the hide glue to be a problem. I'd go as far as to say that I wish it sometimes was. I think something from the 18th century that has stayed together that long is fair testament. Biggest problem is change of moisture content as you know. Keep it up. Best wishes. Al.

If U nead to ask is no hobby for U- simply. U can make cine furniture by handsaw and old rusty handplane. Moste value is knolage about wood, about your possibilities. Tools are second on the list. IMO If U try lern woodworking from YT is somthing wrong with U- go and make, do not stare at other people make. If U have table saw, and thiknes planer jointer is no so nessesery as U think. With is simpler but whitout U can stil make this work.

Recommending a jointer to a new/hobbyist woodworker is a stretch. It just isn’t necessary. While I wish I had one, I’ve made countless projects without one using rough sawn lumber.

My advice to any new woodworker is to simply just start with what you have. If you have nothing and you're starting from scratch, don't be afraid! Some of the lesser expensive tools will still get you going and producing. You can work your way up over time. The price of your tools doesn't make you a wood worker. The skill set to make quality items with what you have does. I've seen many cheaper tools with proper setup produce quality cuts. Don't get suckered into the belief you have to have top dollar everything. Just build, enjoy, purchase and upgrade as you can and within your means.

Used this formula for 2 side tables made from Cherry. I use BLO instead of his finishing oil, at 2 parts oil, 1 part Poly, and 1 part Thinner. The key to success is to keep the coats thin, and wipe off any excess about 5 minutes after applying.

I work in a cabinet shop and we used rubio for a time but it is a pain to use on doors. Also, you can tone the color.
@kennethspeed20194 күн бұрын
One of the attributes of woodworking that draws people to it is the need to be present. You have to concentrate on what you're doing practically all the time. Your comment about not doing a glue up when tired sparked recognition in me, but I'd say, "Never machine when you're tired." You can replace a cabinet component but you can't replace a body part.
