She must eliminate overcrowding in classrooms first before she can speak about reading for meaning at foundation phase. Overcrowding is a stumbling block to effective teaching. It's beneficial to school principals because their earrings depend on the number of learners the school has but teachers can't teach and learners can't learn effectively in overcrowded classrooms.

Nothing wrong with your idea but where does the money come from ? Reducing overcrowding means more classrooms and more teachers. This means more expenses. Meanwhile , after 30 years they haven't found the money to eradicate pit toilets in thousands of schools..

They must start by using everything they have at their disposal. For example, the ANC government closed down some farm schools due to multigrade teaching instead of reprioritising them for a single phase. It's their job to find funding for the project of building new schools. Also, one teacher can't teach an overcrowded classroom alone in the meantime. They must make employment of EAs permanent for this purpose. As long as overcrowding is not addressed speaking about quality teaching and learning is more like dreaming.

Why is it so difficult to spend on important things than having a government feeding themselves & families with money and wasting it. They must make a plan and see where they'll take money from as they always see how they can take money that was meant for the poor so i bet they can make a plan and start breaking the heads to come up with that money. It is a shame that children have to be subjected to overcrowding, yet the teachers can't even figure out which child needs more assistance. That nonsense system of theirs about pass 1 pass all must come to an end because our children suffering which i thought my son from the age of 6 how to read and his a A learner at school but my concern is about the rest of the children because every child in the street i see him/her as my own. So please dont make excuses for a government that neglected the citizens, especially the children of this country@@ProcaviaCapensis-ts8ub

Numeracy and literacy on rural schools with no toilet, no electricity, no textbook, no teachers is the last concern. Make a healthy environment first. Curriculum should be the last part on your priorities.

Please please bring down the teacher to pupil ratio. Even though it is 1:40, most underprivileged schools in urban areas, have many more than 40. As a teacher myself, you cannot reach ever child, however hard you try. Please don't cancel, NS, Maths and English. Good luck.

The problem with most parents they expect teachers to do everything which parents also need to play they role on weekends by helping they children. If teachers can stop giving children homework during the week, it will also help. Teachers can give homework for weekends, yes, because parents are also working. What makes me so angry about my son's school they will give them homework on all subjects in 1 day, then the Maths teacher decide not to do his work and give the children 10 pages of Maths my son is only 10 years old and will do homework until 21:00 up to 22:00 and when his not done he will take it up to himself and wake up around 4am to complete his homework. I don't mind helping my son, but 1 thing that makes me mad is that teachers not discussing which homework will be sent home for homework in that 1 week on different subjects each day of the week. I let my son read weekend library books and his doing very well academically and just that during the week the teachers can't let parents do all subjects every day and lots of work. I went to the school meeting ready to face the maths teacher regarding his ridiculous homework his giving our kids, and the following day, he will not even mark the work.

All I truly hope for is that teachers get trained better, get aptitude tested before qualifying, and paid way better. The problem isn't so much that the curriculum is "bad", it's that a lot of the existing teachers are there just for a pay cheque, and have no passion - more especially within the poorer communities.

Does the new Minister know how many Ministers have spent millions reviewing the curriculum. We were promised action , not more policy mumbo jumbo. The problems with our education system are well documented lack of qualified teachers, lack of teaching resources, lack of proper infrastructure. Pit latrines etc. can we focus on the problems and get teachers to teach the curriculum that we have where kids are passing with 32%. Excuse the rant but I despair and the GNU hasn’t even begun
@moetikitso72
@moetikitso72 Ай бұрын
Exactly. There is nothing wrong wthe curriculum. There is something wrong with the teaching of the curriculum. Some of us passed well, under the same curriculum. When students fail at university, we don't question the curriculum. We question the teaching methods, delivery, and strategies, and the lecturer may be asked to make changes.

As a parent of two, who went through the same curriculum the MEC says needs to be changed, I have been one if those hands-on parents, helping my kids with homework. Let me tell you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the curriculum. It is simple but quite effective, straight to the point and can help kids to come out of matric effective. What I realized is that the teaching approach by teachers at schools is not right. They teach kids to memorize and regurgitate the book as it is, instead of reasoning and apply what the book says. I used to make things very practical for my kids. For example, for them to apply knowledge in measuring things at home so they can visualize and apply what they learn. I don't know, probably the new crop of teachers are constrained to be practical. Adding the practicality of what kids learn in the classroom creates expectation, interest and judgment. Sorry my narration is long. In short, it is the caliber of teachers and teaching methods / approaches which is a problem.
@spiritholinesscentre5335
@spiritholinesscentre5335 Ай бұрын
I'm sure you're not a teacher, hence you're saying unqualified teachers, because as a teacher I know that all teachers are qualified and many have also studied up Honours while some teachers like me have Masters and PhD. I can honestly tell you that the new minister is correct because our curriculum is very poor and needs to be reviewed. South African learners can't even compete with Zimbabwean learners. Kids pass because the department condones and also adjust their marks to effect a pass. Things like Bela Bill needs to be stopped from being implemented because it's going to destroy our schools. The newly amended 2025 curriculum for foundation phase needs to be looked at because Kenya(Mogotio Township) primary schools are very far ahead of us in terms of Coding and Robotics. They know how to programme using python and the likes before finishing primary school. Therefore, this tells you that there's a serious problem with our curriculum. And as long as the curriculum is amended by those ANC deployed cdes then we will never will this battle because many of them are under qualified yet they're occupying education specialist positions and the likes.
@bhekizwane2659
@bhekizwane2659 Ай бұрын
I agree that there are improvements that can be made to the curriculum, as you mention coding and robotics (AI) to shape our kids for the advancements in the economy. However, the method of delivering lessons and encouraging practical application remains key to make success of any curriculum taught.

If the research will be done here in SA with teachers views considered. The amount of content taught in sciences and technology is too much. There is a need for specialization as early as grade 8 so that learners have advanced skills and knowledge from senior phase stage. Both sciences and technology should be practical and industry based instead of the academic curriculum which leads to memorization with no practical experience and industrial application

Its unlikely that we'll see any changes soon because we have 30 years worth of deliberate dumbing down to undo. If this new minister meant business, she would not have used the word "stakeholders". It seems she still needs to figure out the corruption before being able to address the problems. Lesufi's influence on Education was one of the big problems to begin with, so she may even be in danger if she crosses him.

This thing that our government will always say there's no budget and we inhaling that excuse of them always singing that song. Here they are having a bloated government, and where is that budget coming from to pay these extra Ministers and they Deputies, the same way we as the citizens keep quiet on these issues when our taxes being used for stupid things the louder we have to become for things that will benefit our children and they future. There's no way we always asking about a budget on important things that will benefit our ordinary people but yet we don't fix the fact when these leaders eat, dress, having lavish cars and houses for free and yet get millions in salaries.
