Good work on the truck. It is in lovely condition where it matters. It's neat that you can replace the rear shafts etc with the wheels on. Also it looks like you're happy with the way to sort out the cabin roof. As you sand you might find places where more involved work is necessary, either through water ingress or other problems. You might be able to deal with these with CPES as necessary but it liiks like you have have a plan!
@michaellovell96259 ай бұрын
If what ever is on the roof is bonded as good as you said I think your solution to sand the roof smooth and just go over it sounds the easiest and quickest. I was glad to hear you say you were going to change the differential oil in the Rover. I think I would pull the hub on the side of the failed axle flang and clean the bearings of any metal fillings from the failed flange. It is always nice to be mobile again in your own vehicle . Until next week be safe but have fun. 🛥🇺🇸

Test the paint for LEAD and use a chemical striper like pick one. The gels work great. They strips latex and oil-based paint, varnish, lacquer and shellac from wood, metal and masonry surfaces. I'm sure it will be the fastest way to get it off.
@daniellawson93029 ай бұрын
Glad to hear that you're mobile again. I personally would have swapped it out with a Dana 60. It's much more durable and easier to get parts for, including an air-locker. About MV Geordie, I'm glad you won't need to replace the roof to get that coating off. I suggest a 40-grit disk as that will make the stripping faster. Then you could repair the cabin corners and move on to the cabinsides. I wish you all of the luck in this endeavor and can't wait to see MV Geordie beautiful and cruising again. That beer sounds amazing! I'll have to see if it's available in my area. That's just the type of beer I like.

Hi Peter, watching the trials with that cabin top I do agree that a heavy sand would suffice where the existing material is bonded so well to the plywood, however I think I know your methods enough to suggest you really want it gone, sail boat restorers like Mads from "Sailing Life" channel use a tool that can strip the gelcoat right of and down to the fiberglass for osmoses treatment, anyone can hire these I think, maybe worth a look if your not happy till it's all gone, All the very best from Aus, Al

set your circular saw to the depth that equals the bonded layer then make longitudinal score marks about an inch apart on the cabin roof. use the multi tool to go between the scores removing the top layer then sand it all down with way fewer expensive disks

@tomd41379 ай бұрын
many years ago, at least 15+, i had to do the same with my cruiser. i found it easier to just cut the old plywood off and replace with new. while looking for way to cover the new wood i found an old-time boat restorer/sailor that showed me a way to cover the plywood not with canvas or fiberglass but with plastic window screen and industrial pipe/steam pipe coating. i bought a gallon he recommended; it was like a thick paste. i can't remember the name of the product or where i got it. as instructed i stapled the screen down with ss staples and spread this paste, it was more like a real thick paint, on the screen. it dries really hard. i put down two coats, sanded down the rough spots and painted. it's never leaked and looks as good as the day i put it down after all these years.

you could try a scotch-brite clean & strip disc on an angle grinder (just get an off brand). I used it to strip over a mm of paint of my boat. It makes a mess though, i caged myself in with plastic and a gasmask.
@jeffreylord81729 ай бұрын
you can buy 6inch / 150mm sanding disc with 6 holes for vacuum collecting the dust. i seem to remember they went to 40#, you could also try a floor sanding edge sander these use 178mm or 7", resin fibre sanding discs, which range from 16# to 120#, . the sanding discs you are using are excellent but you do pay a high price for them, . 1 other machine you could try is a paint remover , it is similar to an angle grinder but it has a bottom plate with carbide cutters that are designed to remove paint but not damage the substrate, i believe they are designed to remove 0..3 mm at a time with some adjustment available ,with the area you have they may be a viable alternative. builders hire shops may have them.
@mySeaPrince_9 ай бұрын
Maybe skimming the roof with the planer.. could possibly rough the old blades like a fine saw tooth, use angle grinder with harsh flappy disc (a side note.. have you seen the wavey blades they give a ripple effect) then sand? I would test to see if the resin you will be using reacts or sticks.. with the old. Did you look at the silicon oil additive for the differential?

Glad your mobile Peter that fiberglass problem you've got that figured out sand it down with 80 grit that will work you don't need to strip it all off just make it adhere anywhere where that wood is rotten dried out as much as you can and then use wood hardener to strengthen it if it's not stained underneath don't replace it use Marine Bondo not Automotive Bondo because Automotive Bondo is porous and will allow moisture to continue to work its way into your project so vinyl Ester chloride is the way to go then use regular fiberglass if that's what you wish to use otherwise I would stick with your tried and true two-part epoxy as I said you can mix color with that so it's not just clear coat but like gelcoat any color in the rainbow you mix with that clear epoxy you can use it and spread it out use a heat gun to make it glossy

Great to see below a S3 as it's been a while for me. Built over 50 of these in my time and currently building a 90.. Enjoyed seeing the axle oil weep onto the wheel rim. They all did this at shaft change. Used to jack them up real high on the work end, and a rag on the rim! It turned pretty smart one handed on the test drive, have you PAS on that? Anyway. Good as ever.

Just had an EPITHANY, , CLEAN AND STRIP DISCS, these are like scotch brite scourer, on steroids, they will strip the paint off metal but not abrade the metal, you do need to be careful on timber though. Available from100mm to178mm, Worth looking at.

When I owned a woodie Grand Banks 42, if I was refinishing an exterior area and the existing covering was well bonded, I simply sanded to smooth and recoated. Why is it so important to remove that well-bonded cabin top covering? Well, I should have just kept watching because I see that reason has crept into your method. :) :)
