Cable Routing Walkthrough - Aira MX1, TR8, TB3, System 1, TB-03, Korg Volcas, Minilogue, Electribe

I had a request to go through how my gear is all linked together and the cable routing so here it is. A quick walkthrough on how all my gear is connected together.

Probably one of the best explanations of cable routing and hardware setup on KZbin. I plan on picking up an MX-1 in the near future along with other gear after tax season. And this video will be my main go to on setting everything up. Plus, great music on the side to listen to. Great job man.

Groovy gear next door style pron, well done. Your setup seems to be needing that spdif input on the mx1, off the top of my head 1. small mixer with spdif out would allow stereo channels(behringer ddm4000), or a badass sequencer (yamaha rs7000, emu command station{has extra audio ports for send/receive or just plain audio in}) or an effect unit with spdif out Boss VF1/Lexicon mx200/TCElectronic M350

Originally I had the MX-1 USB out connected to my MPC live, to send clock. But then I also wanted to connect my PC to the MX-1. For this reason o also changed to to good old MIDI cable and free the USB connector. Next I used to use USB to connect my novation Circuits to my MPC, but when I set my MPC to controller mode, that stops working as clock. Therefore I also ordered MIDI cables for that connection. So basically I am planning to clock everything via 5 Din MIDI cables.

Can you help!? I am considering getting an MX1 to go with my TR8 but have one question. Does the USB audio only send the master (and not the assignable outputs) from the TR8 to the MX1? Is it possible at the same time as using the USB audio, to send analogue audio signals from the assignable outputs to the analogue audio inputs of the MX1. EG - bass drum on assignable output 1 (into audio channel in MX1), snare on assignable output 2 (into audio channel on MX1), everything else through USB into USB channel on MX1 ? Thanks!!!

If its just syncing them together so they all play when you hit play on one of them then the midi channels wont matter...just set the sync setting to external on all the machines that will be 'slaves'. If connecting more than 2 though you will need to make sure they all have midi thru to pass the midi along the chain.

Incredible set up! I recently purchased a Korg Volca Bass and the TR-8, how would I route everything in order to sync up both of these devices and a ableton Push? I got a komple audio 6 as soundcard btw.

I noticed you have the Electribe in channel one of the MX-1. The Electribe has left and right coming out of the unit. Are you going in mono with TS cable? And does it matter what's going in to the MX-1 as mono does it still all come out stereo of the MX-1? I'm a bit confused with those first 4 inputs. By the way, great setup and vid.

I tend to always record in mono so I just use the left output of the Electribe into the MX1 and then record in mono. Pi find ot easier to pan and get stuff to sit better in a mix in mono

Awsome set up! I would like to know, if you send the tr 8 via usb to the mx1 can you split the different drums up in individual channels in ableton? Like when you use the tr8 as a sound card? Thanks a ton anyway, your videos are great!

Impesanteur no...as far as I know you can only split the sounds when using the TR8 as a sound card. would be very cool if you could though

Hi , I have a request about how to , connect some hardware. I have a beastep Pro, a tr8 , a set off volca ( beat , keys and kick , and mix ) and a beringer td3 and also a beringer interface umc204hd , and a 8 channel mixer . I was wondering how wiring the lot for bsp Pro to be master. Thanks

If you want everything to sync to the BSpro and start automatically you will probably need a midi splitter for the volcas as they don't have midi out. Easiest way is midi out of BSpro to in off the tr8 then midi out of the tr8 to midi in of the td3 and then midi out of that to one of the volcas. The others can then be synced via the sync cable but they won't start and stop automatically. You would have to do that manually. Other option would be a midi splitter out of either the tr8 ot td3 which would split the midi signal 3 ways into the volcas. Not sure if the volca mix has midi in. Don't think it does. Hope that makes sense.

Is it possible to connect TR-8 to MX-1 this way: TR-8 kick drum from assign out to MX-1 mono in. Rest TR-8 main out to MX-1 stereo in? At the end of the day I would need separate kick drum in MX-1 as with analog mixer.

How comes you do not need a audio/midi interface ? Or is the Mx1 got one built in ? Iv tried to connect just a minilouge to abelton but the audio wouldnt workn watched a few videos and i believe i need a audio/midi interface.

So I just picked up my MX1. I have a TB3, M-Audio Venom and Kaos Pad. I want to sync it all together through the MX-1, sending audio into my daw, and back out through the MX1 while also sending VST audio back out through the MX-1 and to my studio monitors? How would I go about doing this?

Rezzonator nice! i had to buy a erm multiclock, so all (incl. DAW) is very thight now. but with ableton and the mx1 it's easier i think. with a "real" midi interface between the gear and the computer you got always trouble

Lukas Süess the Roland gear seems to work really well with midi sync etc and having midi thru makes it a lot more connectable to other gear

From TB 3 to Volca base is the tb3 midi set to channel 4 as well or just the volca base and the tb3 is just passing thru midi and the volca base is picking midi up on that channel thanks

PLUCKA,S SHED just the Volca bass is set to channel 4. the TB3 is on channel 2 and midi is passing through. that way I can sequence the Volca from Push on channel 4 without the TB3 making any sound and then sequence the TB3 on channel 2 at the same time

Seba Kerckhof ooh that's a hard one to answer. If I was wanting just the 'acid' sound then I keep the TB-03. For more all round bass and other sounds then the TB-3

Someone can help me to connect the Roland System-1 to my Korg Electribe 2? i need this working but i try some option with no success. I set both midi channel of the machines set to 1, but i cant figured out what im doing wrong...if anyone can help me i will be in debt forever! thank you all so mutch!

Are you wanting the electribe to control the system 1 or the other way round? Assume you are using standard 5 pin midi connectors?

Rezzonator right now i have connect the midi cable (5 Pins) in the midi IN (on electribe 2) and in the midi OUT (on system 1). Even set the Midi Thru of the S1 to ON....result is i can play the various OSC of the E2 with the keyboard of the S1 but i cant use no one of the S1 effects/lfo/osc/filter... what im looking for is to be able to use all the s1 “sound distortion” with my electribe OSC but unfortunally right now, my S1 is only recognize by the E2 like a normal midi keyboard with no effect knob...

Not 100% sure but don't think you'd be able to do that via midi as thinks like the lfo etc are 'internal' to the System 1. Midi will only be sending cc messages. You could possibly map the controls...for example so the lfo knob on the S1 controls the lfo on the electribe but I don't think thats what you are trying to achieve.

@@rezzonator thats so bad...however there is a way to recording a pattern with the s1? I mean playing a series of notes and making them repeat on the instrument but with all the system 1 effects? At that point, it would be enough for me to connect both machines to a mixer and make them sound independent...

@@rezzonator Thanks for being so quick. I have Abelton but love seperate daw jams etc. Got loads of hardware etc. Have various sets. Microbrute with Impact and mini nova. Volca and Bastyl sets. Bass station and TR8. Trying to create a set with just tr8 and mini xl korg with Microfreak (that just stopped working). Using sequencer on xl . trying not to use external sequencer etc. Think I ave midi channels wrong. Should drums stay on 10? Should I switch off and re boot in sequence? Thanks mate

@@minisynthcollective7822 so I'm guessing you want the korg sequencer to start the TR8 when you play it? If tgats correct the midi channel wont matter...just set the TR8 auto sync then connect midi out of the korg to midi in on TR8 and it should work. Hopefully I've understood your question! 😁

@@rezzonator Thanks mate. I had it the other way round. thought the drum machine runs first. On the drum brute I go out of midi in to microbrute. On volcas I use clock. Will I be able to go out to the Freak I will I need thru boxes. At which point to you need thru boxes. Your help is really appreciated.

Are you using the MX1 as a stand alone mixer or as a soundcard through Ableton Live or another DAW. If its going through a DAW its likely to be the settings in the preferences.

Hello rezzonator,took the plunge today and bought a roland mx 1, after watching yours and liam taylors studio jams,... because i needed something to rout all my gear through so i can get a jam going,,i hav a strat ,a les paul,a line6 helix floor guitar effect processer, a boss rc 300 looper ,a moog sub 37, an ensoniq work station ,a microkorg xl+ and a mpcx ,and a tr8s ,,,any suggestions would be good ,i hav no midi or routing experience ,is there anything i might need, other than midi cables ,lol thanks

Rezzenator ,as i siad yesterday i bought the mx 1 ,there was a problem with the order so it has been cancelled .. is this a blessing , would i be better spending my money on something else instead of the mx1, to control if if thats the word all my gear should i buy a decent mixer instead of the mx1 ,your thoughts thanks..

The MX1 is great if using a lot of the Roland Aira or Boutique gear. If not you would probably be better off with a standard mixer. The MX1 is also good as a multi channel audio interface as you can record up to 8 different tracks at the same time into a DAW. Again depends on whether this feature is necessary for you.
