Now that you have an APU I would carry a heat gun to thaw out the valves. I have one in my truck and along with a big hammer for the drums and some brake safe alcohol through the lines it’s gotten me out of a lot of jams. I run the winter ice roads in Canada and never been stranded with frozen brakes. All the best for the new year. 👍👍

Steve, always carry a couple sets of extra gloves, when yours get alcohol soaked! Next, always carry a hand held propane torch, you could of heated up the froze air governor, the froze cab latch, and the air dryer, to get the ice out of them! Also, air line antifreeze is a must! I have had my foot valve freeze hard as a rock, and did not find out it was that way till i got moving down the country road leaving my house one very cold spell years back! Trucking in extreme cold is not for the faint of heart! Glad you got everything fixed to get you back to the shop! Be safe out there! Also having one of the "Little Buddy" propane heaters with you if your fuel gels up just might save your life in extreme cold! a couple of extra tanks too!

In sweden where stacks are relative uncommon and the exhaust is at groundlevel we use a flexible hose from the exhaust and direct the flow towards the valves that are frozen and it does the trick 99% of the time and there is no melting of the airhoses

That is exactly what happened to my father's truck in Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1977. Back than, my old man was driving a 1972 Chevrolet COE Titan. He was on a Husky truck stop and had to raise the cab to repair something (can't remember what it was). He did it but the cab wouldn't came back down. He fought that thing in minus 25 degree to the point he suffered a stroke and pass out along the truck. Other drivers and people from the truck stop picked him up and brought him in the restaurant saving his life. God bless them!!! The old man was so stubberned, he wouldn't go to the hospital. He got them to call me living in Montreal, Quebec to go and get him, the truck and the load. So i took a plane from Montreal to Toronto and from Toronto to Thunder Bay than a cab from the airport to the truck stop. I was 18 years old at the time and drove that piece of crap back to Montreal. It was the good old days...LOL!!!

Great video. I worked for an electrical contractor back in the mid to late 90s. They bought a brand new auger and pole setting truck. The first time we used it, we were able to drill 4 or 5 holes with no problems. We were wrapping up the last hole when our operator was shaking the dirt off the auger, and all of the hydraulic filters on the truck blew off the truck. We dumped all of the hydraulic fluid on the customer's lot. It was rather funny listening to our operator call the office to tell the president of the company what happened. FROZEN ! ? ! ? Steve...... Early in my career I was in your predicament ! I struggled for hours ! An older driver sat in his truck grinning will I struggled ! When I got the situation resolved, the older driver ( 64 ), cams over and said there is an easier way! I took his advice and stuck to it over the last 40+ years. When the first freezing temp is predicted for the season, pour alcohol down both trailer air lines and hook them back up. I would do that every time I hooked up air lines. Once a week if I was pulling the same trailer. At least twice a week when it dropped to 0°, and every other day below 20°. No problems with air but did have alcohol in a squirt bottle to use with a hammer when drums froze-up ! Hey ! Have a good day and "Keep on Truckin !" 😎

That air leak is notices able on camera, you can hearing from where the camera sits.Rear wheel steering, hmm, I guess you can crab steer that blower machine. Great drive on from the loader, Seem to know that machine a lot.. Great positive vibes does help as well get you motivated to get out of the cold as well.

One thing I think you could've done was take the air inlet (suction side) hose to the air compressor off the engine air cooler, and let the compressor >slowly < suck the alcohol into the system. Oh the joys of winter driving. All the things ya should have done come back and bite you in the ass. Winter has its own special pre maintenance. Lines freeze, bolts break, hands and feet go numb. I remember the winter fun to well. At least you pull your own trailer. Always best when winter gets started to shoot alcohol through your lines. Anything that has some kind of air or fluids running through it should be check. Air dryer brought up to snuff. Just a bit of ice in the wrong place has ruined many a drivers day. Glad I don’t have to deal with that anymore. Anywho FSC another fine video. Have a great and a safe day , happy trails and happy motoring, keep the ice at bay….Happy New Year

FYI, While Alcohol does work, it also does a number on the rubber parts in your air valves. I recommend rebuilding your air valves this summer when it is warm.

Sorry you had this happen to you buddy. You got to make sure to be ready and prepared especially in the winter time. It’s always that one time when you don’t or skip or forget to that it will come back and bite you in the ass. Lol! I remember a couple years ago when you didn’t hook up the power to the air dryer to heat it for the winter. I always carry a plastic syringe in my box with me on the road. You don’t need the needle just the tip so you can inject it into things like that air line. It’s about 1” or 2” dia by 4” to 6” long. It works great for lots of jobs. Also a refillable torch especially in the winter time.

Dewalt makes a cordless heat gun that uses the driver batteries. I use it all the time now to heat intakes and make cold starts way easier in minus 20. My backup is the MAPP torch.

Hows this for a thought. Tee a #6 line up from the governor to the flap on the grille for checking radiator and that way you can add alcohol easily without having to raise the cab. Cabbys are fun....until they're not.

On the school buses, they tell us that when the brakes freeze up like that, pump the brake pedal and raise the engine RPM’s. The thinking is that the pumping action gets the warmer air from the air compressor through the system and thaw out the moisture in the lines. Good luck

Old trucks are like old people in they just don't like the cold and if it makes you feel better, my windshield wiper fluid froze up on me during the cold snap down here in Southeast Texas because it was too cold for the fluid and the only way to warm it up to melt it was to drive Aggie until her engine got hot enough for it to melt.

@@tracymiller1881 No. You're wrong. There are check valves that prevent back flow to the tractor. Red line charges air to the trailer. Blue line is service air when the brakes are applied. You were taught incorrectly. What you're doing will help the trailer from freezing up. But, not the tractor.

Maybe you service your air system correctly, and therefore don't have any problems with your tractor. But, your deicing method isn't doing shit to your truck. As long as you feel good about it is all that matters.

I heard somewhere every so often you have to drain the air tanks as water builds up from precipitation if that's the word im looking for. Which can freeze the brakes. I'm not a trucker and my only experience driving a real one was a 1978 Kenworth dump truck 13spd a block and a half down a side street. I drive a 5spd pickup and having more gears kinda threw me off.

Need to carry a fitting to connect 2 main air lines on dryer together an bypass dryer when that happens so you can get to somewhere and repair it. Purge valve seems froze.

Sounds like you either need to get a good mechanic to keep that rig maintained and roadworthy, or trade it in. Especially since you have to keep a supply of every type of mechanical fluid on hand to keep it operating.
