In the late seventies I was driving a GMC General ten yard dump truck when a friend of mine moved to Newport Arkansas and bought a couple of cab overs. I went down and sat in the saddle of a 1974 International cab over with a 400 Cummings with a 13 speed Fuller transmission. Driving in the mid west and south east for two years before I came back home to start my apprenticeship to be a union ironworker. I loved it and sometimes wonder if I made the right choice.

Trucks like this made me want to be a truckdriver. Not all the flair and show shit but... not the fancy seats and dash but actual working trucks. As long as the AC works and in the winter these old cab em' overs your feet always stay cold. But something to say about driving them safely. Rhe blind side on that passenger side front is a bitch. And those stupid ass spot mirrors on them really ruins the looks. The best cabovers are the ones where the gearshift never moves when you tilt the cab. Less linkage to mess up. He'll I've owned a couple in my time and had "mechanism fuck up the struts letting the cab down too fast. He'll I'm so old I remember what the yellow, red and blue brake valves mean.

@@THROTTLEPOWER Yeah they were. They are gone now due to "progress". He'll you give a rookie driver an old cabover, even a show truck, 90 percent could not drive them or even climb over the doghouse and undress in the bunk laying down. Forget cabovers even. Those old conventionals to get in the sleeper half couldn't even fit through the hole. And then just a little bunk? But if you sleep too much you ain't driving enough to make money. Deregulation in the eighties opened the door to what we got now. 48 state apportioned plates, IFTA sticker. CDLs, and PTO with half as much pay and way too much time on the road. But... a Condo and auto tranny and hours upon hours of wait time at a dock to load and unload. Everything used to be more fun, challenging and took actual skill to drive a truck than wat it does now.
