SO, what do you think he was REALLY after!? Or was he thinking this is a great place to stop when low on fuel and ask for help? A high speed corner on the M25/M4 junction seems like a great place, right? Thanks to the lorry that saw me joining on the carriage way in a bad place who gave me room and flashed me out.
Be mindful of stopping to help on the motorway as this can be very dangerous! Not just from a, you don't know who you're stopping for, but also you are at a massive increase of risk on the side of a fast moving carriageway. Always stop in front of a stopped car car NEVER behind it. Try and leave a bigger gap than I did here mine was reduced by having a person in the hard shoulder. Keep the engine running, be ready to pull away and DON'T leave your car until you are sure of the situation and surroundings that you are getting out for and in to.
DRIVE SAFE
Beware of the petrol and rings roadside scam! Talk through it or simply drive off. Or in this case, both.
If you really fancy a laugh to quote MetalVII7

When I saw him he was on another slip road, not far away (I was on my way to Pinewood). Exactly the same story, he offered me two "gold" wedding rings, his business card and a piece of paper with his mobile phone number if I'd help. Like you I offered to run him to a petrol station but it became clear he wanted money in exchange for the rings. Minimum of £150 as he needed to get back to Germany that day (in a UK reg BMW?). He asked me to drive him to a cashpoint where I could get money out against the valuable jewellery. Instead, I said, I'll run you to my office and we'll sort it there .... "I work at the local Police station, just a mile or two away". He can run faster than you might think.

Southern Dash Cam Chris I am just outraged. I study, I work, wife stays at home with a 1 year old daughter, I havent claimed a penny in 9 years in here. Media is already portraing us in a certain way. At the end of the day it comes up to the individual experience. Is it you in the video? I am considering Wales from next year after I get my nursing degree and some experience:D P.S. I just realised I need a dash cam, too.

It is me yes, and you're right. It's hard to get pigeon holed and lumped in with the rest of any kind. You can do one of two things it seems, anger yourself and distance yourself from what you came to. Or, as you have, be a normal person and carry no entitlement. But I also ask that you drop the shame. It's not needed. There are many reasons for getting a dash camera. Mine are because of accountability. Both to myself and to the legal system in this country that has no regard for truth, but for what can be twisted, I mean "argued" in a court of law. But yes they are a good idea, be aware they can condemn as fast as they can exonerate.
@japanluv

Southern Dash Cam Chris I do around 2000 miles a month and encountered many situations. Few years ago Directline didnt help me at all for an accident that I wasnt at fault. Had a friend with me who didnt count as a witness, while being nicely to the the young lady( who crossed my way in a roundabout and with P on her rear window) offering her to replace my bumper with parts off ebay, to end up to completely stop to cooperate with me and few months later her agent to contact me that she finally agreed to everything and they can compensate me. Car had been sold at that moment and been told that once sold, nothing can be offered as compensation. True or not, I still dont know until today. As for me being ashamed, as much as I am ashamed, I am also proud of where I am and I always try to open eyes where needed or someone is interested. Prince of Wales spends lots of time in Romania where he bought several old houses( and a castle or two:P) and restored them and he does agrotourism. Come in summer to us and Ill be your guide:D Can you tell us what dashcam you are using, please? I wish you a wonderful week ahead and use the kind heart with caution...

Hi, that does seem typical of the legal system vs truth. I've lost years arguing with it, best to document to be sure. On that note the camera is the DOD LS 460w I bought mine direct from the supplier online. I can't advise where to buy beyond that. As for my kind heart, sadly it can be as black as it appears kind.

What is the world coming to when people offer help only to get scammed. Such a shame as England in the 60's & 70's was such a wonderful place. Everybody helped each other without such things happening. Watching the things that go on it England and globally is a bit like watching a loved one slowly die. Shame on us all for putting up with such things and letting them get so far.

Otby as I see this take traction I realise how common this is. It makes me sad I'd do anything I could to help a person in need. I often pride myself in being pretty useful if someone is in real need. This has tainted my impulse to stop but on the other hand, I couldn't live with myself if I didn't stop and later heard somebody came to harm. My advice is now to my children not to stop. I however can't practice what I preach.

Its sad that people would prey on the goodwill of fellow drivers like this. I once picked up a middle-aged man, drove him to the petrol station about a mile away and he was so thankful that I didnt have the heart to leave him there, so i insisted I drive him back to his car. Seeing scams like this makes me wary to ever help someone like this again! :-(
@cachurchill76
@cachurchill76 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree, I'm going to try and not let it stop me helping people. I stop a lot and to be fair this is the first time I've had this issue. 9/10 times help is on way and they are all fine. But it's that 1 person that really could do with a helping hand that will keep me doing it. The sad thing in that 9/10 some may need help but don't trust a car stopping to help them, so wave you on. It's a sad state, but we must keep trying.

Same thing happened to me joining the M40 at High Wycombe. Different guy, exactly the same story. This type of thing happened to me about five years ago. Stopped to help a couple of Romanians on country road, who came out with the same story. Didn't give them any money but nipped to the nearest petrol station and got a fiver worth of fuel for them. Went back to the spot where they had "broken down" and they had vanished.

This exact scenario played out with me and my wife on Exmoor a few years back. The guy was parked up in a lay-by and flagged us down and gave us near enough the exact same speech and offered us 'gold' rings as a deposit. Although we had a bit of cash, we were suspicious and declined to help. Possibly the same guy or at least from the same country.

This scam happened to me about eight years ago on a lonely stretch of the A39, just south of Padstow in Cornwall, UK. Different guy from what I recall, same rings-for-petrol and hard-up gag. I cottoned-on, as soon as the rings were offered, clinched by the mounting pressure to hand over some dosh. I declined, saying more or less the same thing as the chap in this video - '' Sorry mate, I don't carry cash often, other than some odd bits of shrapnel...'' and instead, took note of his VRN, drove on a little further and then called it in to D&C Constabulary. This guy was not alone however, he had two others in the vehicle - a van - with him, from his accent and look, I deduced he was probably east-european, so yeah, Romanian would be no surprise then.

This happened to me a few days ago! I live in Austria and I saw a man and a woman asking for help on the side of the road. He asked for money and I offered to bring his wife (I guess) to a gas station. He declined and just wanted the money. It was pretty clear that he isn't out of fuel because how would he get gas with the money anyways. He asked for only 5€ but it still didn't seem very convincing. Really sad how people use techniques like that because if somebody else is at some point really needing help I would always be sceptical...

People who stop for others on the motorway and end up getting scammed only have themselves to blame. Genuine people in need of help will have a mobile to call someone or there are plenty of emergency telephones to use. There are CCTV cameras all over and if you are really concerned then phone the emergencies services yourself and give them a marker post and location etc. Don't offer to give lifts or pay. This scam is just like the fake doll in a blanket in a car seat left at the side of the road, looks convincing until you get out to investigate and your car and keys are gone in 60 seconds. Be vigilant.

sadly this exact same man did the exact same thing to my dad (my wife was on the passenger side) when he was driving back home on the a40 from central london. my dad saw him at the end of the bridge that goes up towards acton etc and pulled over to the side as the guy had asked him to stop and gave the exact same story and asked for £200 and then said that my dad should take the gold ring (at this moment he had put the gold ring on the dashboard) as its worth £350 but my dad knew very well what was going on and told the guy to take the ring back and that he doesn't have that kind of money lying around and he then sadly gave him £20 as he kept begging to my dad and my dad couldn't take it as he has a big heart and gives money to the poor regularly and does charity work every day or so... so he gave it and off he went.... thankfully i saw this video because my wife had recognised the voice and when she looked up to see the video she was shocked to find out that it is the exact same person! i hope he does this to me when im on my motorbike because i sure as hell would love to give him a few words or so ;)... he messed with the wrong person!

Had the same experience with a similar looking bloke on the slip road joining the M25 from the M23. Threw a ring and a dodgy business card at me and said he was a cab driver and needed petrol money to get him to Manchester. I thought why the hell would a minicab driver come this far without any money! Glad I've seen this on you tube as was feeling slightly guilty for leaving him. Now I know it was definitely all fishy.

I stopped for a guy on a slip road here in Sweden a couple of years ago. He had English plates on, so I thought to myself "fellow Englishman, how can I help?" So i stopped, and he wanted the same as this guy. Cash for fuel. Sounded like this guy too. He put two big gold rings in my hand and said he needed £50. I told him to follow me to the cash machine 2 minutes away. He followed, but during the short journey I felt something was wrong, or more to the point, wtf am I doing? We got to the shopping center, and saw that the ATM was next to a jewelry shop. I told him that I was just going to check if the rings were real before I take out the cash. He then came running towards me, snatched the rings out of my hand, and then drove off! So I'm guessing the rings were fake, and my advice to those who encounter these people is, just drive away!

This is a problem here in Sweden as well. They are called road pirates. They are looking for money and they often offer false gold. They can also become aggressive and start pursuing you. The Swedish police have a clear advice: "Do not stop! Everybody has a cell phone and can call for help instead of trying to stop cars om the motorway. If someone tries to stop you call the police. "

OK, here's something for people that are validly needing fuel but haven't got enough money for fuel. You can use this once per debt and I only advise it in extreme cases where you need the fuel. First, you park the car at the fuel station and you walk in, you tell the station attendant your situation, you get them to write down your licence or permit number and your vehicles licence or permit number, then you fill up with only the amount you need. You return to them ASAP, and I mean when you get money..., that is the first debt to pay. You will not be charged with any crime and you will get to go home.

I remember this scam from 10 years ago. Someone flagged me down on the A5 in Rugby. It looked vaguely like a work colleague. So I stopped and had a similar conversation to the one in the video. Scammed. Thing is, he probably gets lucky about 3 or 4 times an hour. He'll have a big bag of fake rings and watches. I also saw the petrol can scam a few times. Lone female wandering about with a fuel can in a car park, begging a fiver. I saw someone actually walk into a branch of McDonald's and try it.

it sounds like the old trick, the thing you have to buy off him because he is so desperate, isn't worth anything like the 'bargain' price he says he's forced to offer you. Someone tried to flog me a '£500 ' watch that he had 'obtained' as a sales sample, for £50 to go to a party. My bet is it was worth £5

If anyone appears to be in need and declines your offer of assistance, it's time to leave. Anytime you do stop make sure all doors are locked. Never leave your vehicle, let them come to you and talk with the window just slightly open. Any doubts, leave them to it and call the police.
