CachyOS has been what I've been running for a month now. I absolutely love it and I love base Arch. But with CachyOS, I don't have to worry about a lot of the initial setup I have to do with base Arch (which I love). With CachyOS, it helps automate a lot of the "manual" stuff you have to do with base Arch, but still gives you the flexibility of what Arch is all about. I haven't seen any major improvements from base Arch, but what I was looking for was more of the guided installer (even though I consider myself a power user of Linux since I've been using it since the 1990s) and not having to do a lot of the initial setup manually and get the OS up and running quickly. CachyOS provides the best of base Arch but with a faster, automated install process that works.

It depends on certain factors, such as the capabilities of your CPU. Preferably, your CPU should support AVX2 as one plus of CachyOS are the x86-64-v3 repos. If you have an even older CPU, it wouldn't matter much which Arch-derivative you use as they all would use the standard repos without any newer architecture-specific optimizations anyway. I've also reported a bug when using Haswell-Xeons as these really need the CPU performance governor which is no longer the default for a couple of months. The default behavior now optimizes for powersaving which means huge performance regressions due to inverse turbo behavior. This change didn't affect modern AMD CPUs that much, but older Intel CPUs might suffer. I can't tell if your CPU is affected though, but this can be solved via a custom Kernel or through other less invasive means.

I ran this distro for ~6 months until I started having issues with some mesa-git packages that weren't playing nice and after rolling back my performance went downhill. It's a really nice distro, however I couldn't notice and major differences in performance compared to arch for my use cases and also archinstall is amazing. Definitely a distro to keep an eye out for, but not quite a daily distro tbh.

Just so you know about half of what the LLM talked about was wrong. so double check what it is talking about. example: BOLT: is talking about llvm-bolt, a binary optimizer. not what ever hallucination the LLM said. LTO and PGO have nothing to do with security or maintainability, its purely for performance.

@@xymaryai8283 well for someone that already knows how to use linux then yeah no wonder your not convinced, its made for new users who want to try arch and not go through it manually or archinstall cli I already reinstalled vanilla arch today as i dont see the point in using cachy but for new users it can be a dream, the features they provide was pretty simple also, if you cant understand that then welp do your own research about it, im just showing my experience, what the distro provides that makes it unique, its up to you to decide if you want to use this distro, if not thats fine, idc ngl the first feature i explained was just about compiling packages, which most users dont care about and i dont rlly either, then the repos they provide over the top of cachy which means you may get faster updates then normal arch, then cachy backports packages like example they backported screen tearing for wayland when that patch isnt ready till plasma 6.2 and kernel 6.12. they have a wide variety of kernels to choose from depending on your hardware in their repos, and if you want a different scheduler like the BORE scheduler which can improve games or certain heavy application tasks you can easily get it through their gui which is also a nice thing to have for new users as normal arch doesnt provide that out of the gate

Ah c'mon. Arch IS easy now that there's an installer. KDE Plasma with Wayland or X11 on Arch is all you need. I dunno if this is a hot take, but there are too many distros already, especially Arch based distros. Everybody that's working on these Arch-based distros would better spend their time working on Arch and optimizing it instead of piggy backing on it to make their own thing that they'll eventually stop updating because people are using Endeavour or Garuda or any number of these things. There are too many to choose from and if you're really interested in Linux(especially Arch), you're interested in customization, so every distro that a seasoned Linux user uses, inevitably becomes indistinguishable from any other distro. Make it make sense.
@linuxnext3 ай бұрын
Of course, i have installed and used vanilla arch with its archinstall cli, works great, but if you want new users to get into linux you cant shove a cli in there face at first, these distros get these new users their foot in the door so they can learn the basics of linux then install vanilla arch with that installer like i did this video shows how good this distro is and it has become already popular in the linux distro space with many people expressing their experience with this distro so i needed to try it, iv used garuda and endeavour aswell, they are all great distros to get into linux. if arch had a gui for installing vanilla arch then this would solve having to suggest these arch based distros for new users before they get comfortable with everything so they can go the archinstall route And yes these developers should be contributing to arch instead of maintaining their own distro but maybe they dont want to, thats their decision
@iiisaac13123 ай бұрын
@@linuxnext I agree. In order for people to learn how to ride a motorcycle, they must replace all the motorcycle controls like handlebars, twist throttle, and foot shifter with car ones they're already familiar with like a steering wheel, gas and break pedals, and an automatic transmission. And maybe add another rear wheel so they don't have to worry about balance. This modified motorcycle is an excellent way for people to get into motorcycles. After a year of driving this modified motorcycle, they will be able to jump on any motorcycle without these modifications and ride off.

Artix is justified, as it makes installing/using other init systems easier and has a bunch of options and script integrations for supported packages to be ported over. Other than that, virtually every Arch distro feels like a waste of time trying to capitalise off making arch "easier to use", which in my opinion, defeats the purpose of the bleeding edge "experimental" nature of arch. This "Cachy os" especially confuses me, claiming optimisations when there's already a dozen optimized kernels like liquorix already floating around Arch and the AUR. Truly, if its not something which needs some advanced ecosystem of integrations within its own distribution/installation, why not just shove it in the AUR or a pacman repo and call it a day?
