Cactus Quest

Күн бұрын

It was the early 1970s in northern California where the orange sunshine lit the sky and hearts and minds of a generation. Jay Jackson and his wife Cactus Kate decided to leave the music shop and recording studio behind and go out on what I can only call a cactus quest. But anyway they left the old life behind to embark on a quest to grow and sell cactus. The nursery has since changed hands and is now owned and operated by Brandon Bullard down in Vista California. Open to the public and chock full of epic landscape plants as well as many other cool finds. I hope you enjoy todays nursery tour episode. Brandon also drops a few horticultural how to’s as we tour the second massive 3200 square foot growing facility. A legendary cactus nursery.

hello, here in brazil we have many species of cacti in nature, but we don't have many specialized stores, some species around here are very rare and when they appear they are very expensive, so when you show these places and stores specialized in cacti, it's incredible, great work

Wow, I’m always so happy for new videos. Living in frigid Minnesota, these videos really help ease the time that passes while I wait to take my collection back outside in the spring. Thanks Hunter, keep the quest going! Also it’s super cool to see cactus nurseries that grow from seed! It seems like that’s pretty uncommon.

I visited Kate at Desert Theatre Nursery in Watsonville, Ca in 1992 and she grew San Pedro cactus profusely. It’s has closed and a man in the Central Valley now grows her plants. Is this the same company as yours? Desert Theatre is a great name!

That must be great, in the business of something you have as a hobby as well. I also love your location in CA where you can grow a lot of you merhandise OUTDOORS without fear of them getting too much water or cold weather. I have a collection of succulents and tropical plants where here in our subtropical climate (in Lake Charles, LA, almost coastal), most of what we have to worry about is them getting too much rain. Mine are under an awning on a patio adjacent to a room where I can scoot them in case of an occasional light freeze. So far this year, I've had to bring them inside for a couple of nights, and we're at the end of January '23, so go figure. Best of luck in your business. 🪴🌴

I think it kills the growth tip so it will make many baby plants at the top. It’s a faster way to propagate them than seeds.
@billyjack3580
@billyjack3580 Жыл бұрын
It’s a propagator’s trick. Heat up a nail and burn out the growing point in order to encourage multiple new growing points. Mostly used with species which tend to be solitary or unbranched.
@GreenCanvasInteriorscape
@GreenCanvasInteriorscape 4 ай бұрын
I think it's a technique where you jam a hot nail into the growing point to stimulate pupping A similar technique that does less physical damage is called coring where you take a knife and core out the top growing point, I've done it to Madagascar palms, don't do it going into the Winter though on them specifically. Induces dormant growth points to activate
