Being a very novice collector, I had a very biased opinion about grafting cacti. Now, after watching this, my perspective is completely altered, and grafting cacti in this manner makes complete sense

Hi Hunter!!! I am just rewatching a few of your videos over again. I've only been a collector of cactuses for about 16 months now - have about 100 so far 😉- and just germinated my 1st batch of seeds! I am now getting curious about grafting and so I am trying to learn as much as I can about it B4 I start attempting 2 graft some of my own seedlings. My question is pls Sir, idk if y'all actually answered this question or not in the vid, I didn't notice, but all of this gentleman's grafts he had, What kind of rootstocks were those?!?!! Or if ANYONE reading this happens to know what he's using? And WHY use those particular kind as opposed to the more traditional rootstocks most ppl use? Id surely appreciate any info on this u could supply me with!!. LOVE ur videos always!! I turned my son on to watching u too now! U Rock!!! Keep up the great work!! Video request pls: 1) More detailed vids on fertilizing cactuses or adding supplements to soils? 2) More detailed videos on how to take care of seeds AFTER they germinate or asking more of these growers their methods on successful production of seeds & germination. 3) More vids on the importance of conservation. Because I am truly afraid my grandkids are not going to be able to enjoy these beauties one day, especially in the wild. Thank u so much 😊 Sincerely, Anita 🌵

hi anita., my suggestion is get some very cheap T pachanoi seed and pereskiopsis cuttings. sow them now. in spring start practicing grafting them onto the pereskiopsis. you will be growing you own future grafting stock (T pach) and gaining grafting skills. i use pachanoi for most grafts. i looked back at the vid at 16:23 that is pereskiopsis, best stock for small seedlings. here's a tip, when you cut the seeding, graft both pieces, the root portion upside down. odds are it will throw off multi heads and when you degraft, you can replant it right side up with the roots already there.

HUNTER, your video of you visiting the Cactus and Succulent show at the L.A arboretum was the catalyst for me pivoting towards tougher plants from softer succulents. Went from echeverias and kalanchoes to now more cacti, euphorbia, agave, and aloes. From softer babied plants to getting pricked by these treacherous bad boys.

I feel good about recently switching to 80 inorganic and 20 organic in NorCal. How are those rock pots made?
@zoutewand2 жыл бұрын
I make these kind of rock pots by using superglue and cotton pads. The pads take up the glue and wil transform into hard pads. So you just fluff one up a bit and where 2 stones touch you add one. I usually use some pliers (the ones used for bending and cutting metal wire and ceramic tiles) or a hammer and chisel to chip off parts of the rocks to make them fit better. The chips can be crushed up and placed onto the pads. If you do that, it's practically invisible. I then use bigger chips to fill any gaps up (you don't want it to be 100% closed but you also don't want giant gaps where soil leaks out) a bit. If you have a really good fit you can also use construction glue, the white putty like kind. It's good for bigger flat pieces, for less uniform rocks I prefer superglue tho
@zoutewand2 жыл бұрын
Also keep in mind that stones influence PH and some are water soluble. So make sure you research a bit about the stones and plant you're using. Or try something and write the results down for future reference :)
@zoutewand2 жыл бұрын
Oh yea if there are lots of pantiles used in your area, they're perfect for broader plants like sempervivum! Those usually fit together really well when you use pliers, don't even have to glue stuff!

Blue green algae is not an alga. It is cyanobacteria. It is also a big problem in aquariums. There, we treat it with antibiotics, usually erythromycin.

What do you do when a cactus get elongated how can they be fixed
@billyjack35802 жыл бұрын
There’s not really much you can do, unless you want to cut off the elongated section and re-grow the base. The pieces you cut off can usually be rooted, and will produce normal growth as long as you’ve corrected the problem which caused them to stretch out in the first place.
