Lars, for those who really don't get on with 'drawing' sketches where they need anything other than straight lines, Concepts is a great iPad app to use. Items can then be exported as an SVG and imported to revolve in this case. Great video!

Lars, Thank you for this series (your absolute beginner and these drawer videos). You are a great presenter and make everything very clear. It is great to have the explanations of why you are doing something in a particular way as many times I see the upcoming operation and think something like , "Ok, now he's going to mirror that across to the other side", only to find out, no, Lars is projecting the geometry. Having a lot of prior experience with Solidworks - in the dim and distant, version 2 or 3 if I recall and latterly Sketchup, both of which I used in my woodworking shop, I also find the repetition very useful - "Activate the component", "Turn on history" as otherwise the ingrained habits developed using other software tend to lead me astray.

Hi Lars - I'm surprised nobody else has commented on this (that I've seen), but I had to explicitly enable the preview functionality to color sketch geometry based on constraint status. I don't think you called this out explicitly in this series or the Absolute Beginner series. Really appreciate the tutorials, especially these two most recent series. Really hoping to see more furniture/woodworking inspired videos as we delve deeper into more advanced topics. SketchUp is the king on the block when it comes to designing woodworking plans, but Fusion has so much more to offer imho. Judging from the several woodworkers who've already commented on this video, I get the feeling I'm not alone.

Hi Dan, Thank you for taking the time to watch the videos! Yes, you are right. I did not realize that I had the preview box checked for feedback on fully constrained sketches. Lars - just finished my drawer! Wonderful tutorial - best I've found so far! You have a great skill for delivering just the right amount of information in an entertaining way. I have only two minor suggestions: 1) It might be helpful, although you do this most of the time, to always point out what keys and / or mouse buttons you are holding down, since it is not obvious (or I have seen videos that somehow indicate this visually). 2) A nit-pick on the drawer finish - I know the wood grain is just for show, but for someone actually making the drawer, if they didn't know better, might use that as an indication for cutting the pieces. Of course the grain should go with the length of the piece, not the width. Odd that Fusion doesn't always automatically orient the grain to go with the longest side of the piece (like it did with the drawer bottom)! One more little thing - I noticed when placing that last dimension on the knob that you (and I) got an error - it would not let you keep the dimension you typed in, but rather corrected it for you - it would have been interesting to hear why that happened! Thanks again - looking forward to choosing my next video of yours!

Hy Lars - great series - and I learned that the "combine tool" can also be used as cut - this save time. I understand you just try to explain us some "Fusion - How to". But as a woodworker let me mention some best practices for wooden drawers: (they are almost common sense in the woodworking world - and make the difference between drawing and constructing) - dovetails typical have a fixed angle (depending if soft or hard wood) 1/6 or 1/8 if done by hand or e.g. 10° if done with a dovetail router. So your dovetail sketch should have this angle - normally the backside dovetails are not "half blind" they are cut thru - also typical the bottom is "push in" from the back, and the backside part is therefore a bit smaller in hight and just reaches to the top of the cut grooves. (This is makes much easier to build it, and also helps with typical Wood Shrinkage ) - the wood grain should be along the log side (can be done in render settings) its not so critical for the pins - but the tails will otherwise easily break see www.startwoodworking.com/sites/default/files/uploads/taunton/images/w157coIMG_1837.jpg Grüße aus Heidelberg Germany - Michael

First of all, thanks for your many Fusion360 videoes, been a huge part of me switching from Sketchup to Fusion. Very well explained, not just this series. I am using Sketchup and now starting on Fusion360 for Woodworking. So i am very glad that you decided to make this series, as 99% of the Fusion360 videos are related to CAM, Metal work or 3D print. I have a request / suggestion. The last step missing are plans. To share with others and/or to take out in the workshop to build the drawer, in this example. Is this something you have on your list to do ? What i am missing in the other tutorials i have seen on youtube in relation to plans are best practices to make multiple page plans. To make cut diagrams on sheet good. To make cur diagrams on wood and to make a bill of materials with dimensions.

@JerromKJ5 жыл бұрын
I learn a lot from your well paced tutorials - great work! One minor correction (it might help others): In the last steps of creating the knob, you set a construction line and using it set a dimension of 0.75. As happened to me and can be seen also in the video, the value CANNOT be set (it conflicts with other constraints) and the software shows a small error window and keeps the value at 0.73 . The form is fully constrained once you add the construction line at the middle point.
@Sadge234 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Was working my way through the video and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't fully constrain. No problem after making sure to add the line at the middle point.

Actually, there are two ways that Lars can "take this to the next level"! The first has already been suggested: Do a video or two on using the model to produce plans. The second? Do a video or two on preparing this for a CAM machine! As another poster pointed out, this would also - as a byproduct - reveal that some things can't be done entirely in CAM - some finish work (like squaring rounded inside corners with a chisel) can't be CAMmed.

Great series Lars! Your videos are always so helpful. As a custom furniture maker I really appreciate the specificity of this series in particular. One question about the parametric feature of the drawer: When the height of the drawer is increased or decreased what happens to the dovetails? How can the drawing be set up so that if the dovetail spacing is 2" a dovetail is added if the drawer height is increased by 2?

Hi Richard, Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. Yes, that is a flaw in my design. The solution is using parameters found under the modify tab. @cadcamstuff7 жыл бұрын
Hi Spike. Thank you so much! Well...so I have to admit that I know very little about woodworking, lol. I thought you pretty much made them to size and smacked them together with a hammer. My past experience of woodworking suggests that you're probably right. In this case I'm referring to 3D printing ... I should have mentioned that :-) I watch all your videos and learn a ton from them. The actual project doesn't matter, it's more about how to use different features of Fusion 360. These are skills that can be used in all designs. The offset command is what I thought would be the solution, but I wanted to ask in case there was a particular feature geared to it. Thanks for your reply. Keep up the fantastic work, have a great day.

At 15:30, when you add the construction line to set the width of the knob to 0.75, it looks like the geometry already is fully defined. Brilliant Series. I've modelled my drawer - but used parameters for all the sizes & used finger joints rather than dovetails (since the drawer[s] will be laser cut). The only problem I have encountered is that in the rectangular pattern feature does not seem to allow the number of repeats to be parameterised. I like to be able to set the number of finger joints as a parameter. Any ideas. But what a great series for the beginner! Very well done.

Great video! I be very interested in hearing how and when you address joint clearances when milling wood. Is it easier to set this in the modeling environment or in the CAM environment. You mentioned early in the first part that you are creating all the pieces that are needed to create this assembly. an you take it one step further to generate a materials list? I am having a hard time catching up to you with all your videos so I apologize if you have already covered this. Keep up the good work.

Great, thank you. A minor point, how do you orientate the wood grain by 90 degrees so it looks like real lengths are used in construction?

Hi Peter, Open up the appearances and right click on the material. Then you can click edit and do a bunch of things, including rotating. Best, Lars

Hi Lars, Lots of fun on that one. Some really cool new features, like Combine, Rectangular Pattern. Revolve and Project...very interesting. Thanks again for another great lesson! :) I'm trying to build a rim and it uses revolve as well but I'm having a bit of a time sketching thin walls. I need 4 of these for my tractor project. Do you know of any "Rim" tutorials in Fusion360? TIA, John

Hi John, Really happy you like the videos! Thank you so much for watching. There is this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJyTZoiLpq5gfJI But I don't think I would do it that way. I would draw a cross section of the rim like this www.google.com/search?q=cross+section+of+a+car+rim&tbm=isch&imgil=7515ho4pNCEtEM%253A%253Bv_JS-PEe1RjIDM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.oponeo.co.uk%25252Ftyre-article%25252Fhow-to-read-the-wheel-markings&source=iu&pf=m&fir=7515ho4pNCEtEM%253A%252Cv_JS-PEe1RjIDM%252C_&usg=__Du2SuHU0Q4mm-_azj1TvdPBmI3k%3D&biw=1536&bih=775&ved=0ahUKEwjHgOWLoYzUAhWB24MKHbUBCgoQyjcINQ&ei=1XAnWYfCLIG3jwS1g6hQ#imgrc=7515ho4pNCEtEM:

Hi Lars ... just wanted to ask - when you added the knobs and screws ... would you still need to create constraints or relations between the knobs and the panels??? incase you change dimensions of the panels that the holes end up in the right positions ...???? GREAT video btw - thank you.

Well done tutorials. Since the front-back and right-left pieces are exact copies, is it possible to model 2 and then make inverted copies to shorten modeling time? Is it possible to make the dovetails themselves parametric as well?
@gregmorse24377 жыл бұрын
Answered the first part. It is easy to copy the component and also easy to rotate it with a suitable construction line to use as a rotation axis. Struggling with the second question though.

Hi Greg, Not sure I totally mean by parametric....The way the dovetails are done here are parametric in my opinion.

Great series. All your videos are really helpful. I have been exploring Fusion 360 for about 2 weeks, trying to learn. In an earlier video on the drawer design/modeling you mention how the entire model can be resized parametrically. I implemented "user parameters". I did one dovetail and cut, then used pattern. I created a parameter for 'count' so the number of dovetails adjusts to the height of the drawer. I am having trouble with another area, that is in 'joining" component faces. I've spent hours looking at many tutorials. I've searched the internet. I know Fusion does not have that feature... to constrain component faces. Is there a tutorial that shows the workaround? I would like to see a video of "it doesn't work." and then the fix. Thanks.

Great series once again, but seems to me Autodesk have to work on Move/Copy command. I get crashes while doing that, especially while working offline . Side panels background turns black (as seen in this video as well while placing screws) and there it goes. Once you get to understand timelines and relationships between components, great tool for getting everything ready for manufacturing. Seems to me as woodworker (cabinet maker) right way to approach would be - build your basic sketch (front view), set up your main (user)parameters and relations in 2D sketch, create components and then start drilling or project holes between related parts (components) etc.... Thanks again, Keep up great work. Hopefully got something to share in near future.
