Mario Tennis Aces is a multiplayer party game for the Nintendo Switch, centered around - well, tennis. What else? What's sports? I dunno. Caddicarus spends today reviewing the game, mostly based around the story mode single player, and goes through all the bosses until the terrible bonus content - including 10 second long cutscenes. Is it worth it? Watch and find out! This is kinda like the Smash Bros of tennis games, so it's probably worth a look.

The special shot is better than a regular zone shot. It destroys the racket instantly, and deals a big knockback to your opponent even if he blocks it.

Correction. Nintendo hasn't dropped the prices of games on the Switch. But before we got player/nintendo selects that brought games down to $20 on both wii U and 3DS. I wonder if we will eventually get that on Switch. I feel once the cartridges become cheaper we will see a change..... Hopefully

It's like a fighting game because of the meter management. Special Shots are indeed situational, but they automatically break rackets if not blocked correctly, they also provide a huge amount of knockback even if your opponent successfully blocks it giving you the opportunity to drop shot and maybe have them waste even more meter trying to return the ball... or just giving you a point. They are especially useful if your opponent has one racket left and little to no meter.

The special shots can actually break a racket even if it's at full health, so it can be useful in a few more scenarios than you mentioned, but uhhhh... yeah I do agree that the special shots should have added effects that make them more worth using.

Isn't the full-charge shot different because the opponent's racket breaks automatically if they don't block it, and the zone shot just damages the racket?

The special zone shot actually instantly breaks a racket if blocked improperly, while the normal zone shot only takes a single health chunk. Its very worth it if you get crafty with placement, it also makes that mission with the mechanical bomb koopas super easy, just ko him.

Special Shots might basically be Zone Shots you can pull off from anywhere, but there's a pretty big difference in that if not blocked properly, Zone Shots only chip off one segment of racket health whereas Special Shots will instantly break the racket if not blocked. It makes it worth using if you're trying to go for a KO victory.

7:15 A lot of that is because Koizumi, who was the Director of Galaxy (and now is the producer of the 3D Mario team and was the hardware lead for Switch), came from a writing background. He used to handle the story and lore of prior Zelda games, and I wish he would find some free time to help that team with their current stuff since the plot of BoTW was a bit of a mess. And by that I mean nonexistent.

In response to your segment on zone shots: I would argue that special shots carry a massive advantage over regular zone shots (and that they are, in fact, worth charging your meter to full for) firstly because 1) They’re far more difficult to block than a zone shot due to the fact that they send the ball flying at much higher speeds and 2) If you fail to block a special shot, the consequences are far more grave than those that result from a failure to block a zone shot, as the former will break your racket (of which you only have two when playing online) & will automatically end the volley, also giving you only one more chance to block the opponent’s next special before you’re KO’d and forced to lose. By contrast, missing a zone shot block only knocks you’re racket down a single notch AND allows you to continue the volley without losing points.

About the special shot, if your opponent misses the block he breaks a racket instantly ignoring the 3 HP per racket, whereas with a zone shot it only takes off one HP at a time, so the special shot is pretty good to gain an advantage while gauging your opponent's blocking abilities. If he misses you're 3 zone shots blocked too early away from a KO victory!

I remember a surprisingly good Mario tennis game was on the GBA called Mario tennis power tour. The mechamics were great but it was the single player story mode that surprised me. It was basically an rpg where your character was going to, well, tebbis school basically and you would go through tournaments and level up and gain new stats and skills and finisher shots and it was just pretty neat all things considered.

7:03 'You can't expect Ayn Rand' You're right Caddy, I can't expect Ayn Rand, and I don't want to, because any other writing is better than Ayn Rand. The writing in The Fountainhead is so bad it makes Ready Player One look like William Goddamn Shakespeare, and Ready Player One has a 10 page list to show how terrible it's writing is. And that ain't even getting into the minefield that is Objectivism as a concept. (Seriously Ms. Rand, I know you are dead, but what kind of fucked up individual considers altruism to be a terrible thing) I mean, I know I'm over analysing what was probably just a point of comparison here, but it's Ayn Rand for god sake, Ayn Rand and good writing shouldn't even be in the same galaxy, and that is objective. (OOOOOHH, GOT 'EM)

fully charged zone shot is 10x better than the normal one if you would have played on a higher rank:) If you block the fully charged zone shot, the enemy gets knocked back. After they return it to you, you slow down time for a dropshot for an easy point. This technique is a 100% guaranteed point if the enemy is below 50%ish energy.

I still think the special fully charged shots are worth it because they can insta break a racket, if the ball is too far for you to get or you missed the trick shot you can have it teleport to you and keep the game going, and my personal favorite, waiting until your opponent uses their gage or shot up or waiting right after they use it and use yours to either get the point or break their racket. Recently I don't think the quality of the reviews have been up too par as they used to be. I know I'll probably be hated for saying stuff like this, but let me stress. It doesn't feel as if you're putting as much research into these reviews as you used to. The videos are good, but before I used to learn things I never knew about a game from you. Now I feel like I don't learn anything I already know and there are things that I could correct you on. Like the Special Shot in this game, not just being a zone shot. It's got a huge knockback that could make the shot afterwards easier to hit, or could be used to aim at the opponents racket to break it. It's more mind games than you think. Another case was in Bloodstained Curse of the Moon where you complained about the Desperation Attack not being telegraphed and barely scraping by. It was designed to not kill you, but if you dodge it gives you a life. I'm pretty sure one simple google search would've told you that. Anyway I'm sorry if I come off as rude, I know I'm not a reviewer and may be overstepping my bounds. I just want your reviews to be better as a whole.

Many of these issues were fixed in a patch, and since they’re adding a new character every month for free, I think this game is worth it.
