PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is a ridiculous name for a game. So ridiculous that Fortnite used it for a while as Fortnite Battle Royale, but then dropped that just for Fortnite because of how silly it was. Released in late 2012 for the PS3 and totally forgotten PSVita, PS All Stars is essentially a Super Smash Bros clone, but with PlayStation characters. Well, some. No Crash, no Spyro, no Tomba / Tombi, Sora, ICO, or even Bubsy. Except, as Caddy and ScottTheWoz find out together, it’s basically Smash Bros, but not as good. With the release of the amazing Super Smash Bros Ultimate recently on the Nintendo Switch, get ready for a blast from the past as we try to play Smash but end up stuck with this game instead in our PS All Stars review! The problem with this game is so many of the iconic PlayStation mascots are third party characters, and therefore getting the licenses for a lot of them was just impossible.

And what's even sadder is that the creators actually went after a lot of characters that fans requested like Crash, Spyro, Snake, and Ico but were all rejected. Ico in particular was rejected because the creators felt the different art style of PSASBR would ruin how Ico looked and his unique art style. And Snake was rejected by Kojima because he wanted to promote Rising with Raiden instead. The game also had plans for more DLC like Lightning from Final Fantasy and the main protagonist from Legend of Dragoon (who also was highly requested by fans) but the lackluster sales made them pull the plug.

This video is just so entertaining to watch holy shit. Even though Smash has been around longer, had more to work with once they got to Melee, realized what worked and what didn't with the original Super Smash Bros, and simply added MORE to it, with mainly everyone saying Melee's the best one, and even though I respectfully disagree; Melee was a pretty good place for the Smash Bros series to gain it's footing, by adding more extra modes(like the Home-Run Contest, Adventure Mode, All-Star Mode), and by also revamping Classic Mode and Break The Targets, with the extra characters(even if some of them are obscure, like the Ice Climbers or Mr. Game & Watch, Roy, Marth), but while I don't agree when literally everyone says Melee's the best one, it's definitely got the best intro, and this game also started the Event Matches, too. And even though Melee had some of the most confusing and downright stupid character choices, like Dr. Mario and even, Pichu? I get it, Pichu is cute, but it literally hurts itself everytime it attacks, I know it's the pre-evolution to Pikachu, but it's definitely the weakest character in the entire series roster, and I do remember hearing that Pokémon Gold, Silver & Crystal were coming out at the time, but Pichu is a bad character, for a fighting game; especially when they had plenty of other Pokémon to go with. But if you don't know who a character is, there's the Trophy Gallery Mode too, where you can look at a character's bio, and backstory. That's how I first found out that Samus Aran wasn't a guy, or a robot, but a human lady wearing a space suit, and where I learned that Zelda and Sheik, were the same person, because even though I played Ocarina of Time, I never caught on that Sheik and Zelda were the same person. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, or I hadn't gotten all the way through Ocarina of Time, at the time. I was only 5 when I first played the n64. But even though I don't think Melee is the best of the best, its still a game that's hard to live up to. But Brawl, and the other subsequent Smash games did that. With Brawl adding new characters like Meta Knight, Pit, Pokémon Trainer, Wolf(from Star Fox), Ike(one of my best characters), Wario, Olimar, R.O.B., Diddy Kong, King Dedede, Lucario, and even Sonic the Hedgehog, and Solid Snake!(my 2 favorite characters besides Mario, and Ike). But the tripping thing was the worst part about the game. Which is why I'm glad Smash 4 3DS/Wii-U was way better; and added in more new characters like Pac-Man, Mega Man, Bayonetta, Cloud Strife, Shulk, Lucina, Robin, but Bayonetta and Cloud weren't in Smash 3DS, (the version I had), oh no, they were ONLY in Smash Wii-U, and since I'm NOT Scott The Woz(with the tiny little schnoz), I didn't really see the point of having a Wii-U and 3DS, just for Smash 4. Just the 3DS version was good enough, and then, I hear that Smash Ultimate was being announced, I didn't have a Switch at the time; but, i knew I wanted to play it. Yep, 20+ years, and not a one can figure out how Smash Bros. works, and how to make an all star battle royale game just like it. Maybe someday, someone will get it right, but until then; we still have Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the entire series is STILL pretty much the best crossover fighting game franchise ever made. I mean, I don't blame PS All Stars for trying something new with it's crossover series, but they failed miserably, and dropped the ball hard. Just a note: if anyone out there DOES want to try to come for Smash Bros' throne, you're going to have to try a LOT harder than that, PSABR( same to anyone else, honestly). They tried, but not hard enough to dethrone Smash. And, because PSABR were too slow, they lost some more iconic characters to Smash: like Solid Snake(NOT Big Boss, or Naked Snake, but Solid Snake), Kazuya Mishima, Cloud Strife, and even Joker. And these guys I just mentioned are a pretty big deal(in my opinion), and mean a whole lot to me. Sorry that this was pretty long. I meant for it to be shorter, but it just got out of hand, you know?

This game should’ve had a real story mode. Basically make it how Polygon Man, tired, outdated, bored, and upset. He’s more apathetic than upset since he saw many people rise and fall from his role of “mascot” and due to this he wants to go and make himself the ultimate mascot. Have him merge the worlds and allow people to know it’s him. His goal is that since people love these games, combining them would make him a loved god and the ultimate mascot of PlayStation. Though he wouldn’t care about how messed up the worlds are by mixing them, and thus causing tons and tons of glitches and hurt the worlds. It’s up to the main people of the PlayStation world to meet up (assumingly having some issues since the characters are so different and fighting in order to solve them) and then work together to fight polygon man, and the other PS bosses...also adding Crash, Knack, Octodad, Croc, maybe Shovel Knight, and Klonoa would be awesome and give this game more awesome characters oh also Sora could be really awesome since then having Donald and Goofy wouldn’t upset people since it would be more enjoyable than prestigious..also giving Polygon man more of a personality would be very nice aswell

I think the devs did a decent job portraying each character well and giving them fighting styles that suit them. The only character I remember hearing a ton of complaints for was Dante, but even I don't play DMC so I couldn't comment. Lol.

@@crooked_mermaid The Super mechanic, while flawed, encouraged more aggressive gameplay, which enjoyed over Smash. I also liked how the gameplay was more complex with actual combos and kill confirms you had to learn to improve at the game. Plus, PSAS's online mode was a million times better than Brawl's. There are a few other things that I prefer with PSAS over Smash (Like the fact that characters and franchises actually interact in Smash, the lack of clone characters except Evil Cole, etc), but if I were to explain and go into detail I'd have to write an essay.

@caddicarus 14:45 this is a false criticism. This game has combos for each character, so if you were to use your level 1 and 2 supers in conjuction with these combos the opponent cannot dodge them. This is meant to reduce super spam, this forces players to be creative with supers.
