500 ci with heads, cam, intake and headers only making mid-200's NA? I can understand in the motor's original restricted state back in the 70-80's gas crisis era, but free'd up with some modern day parts that seems awfully low, no?

500 Caddy was not designed to be performance motor, like the big block Chevy, or even the big block BOPs. It's quite limited by low RPM valve train, small valves and decidedly non-performance heads. Here, they didn't touch the pistons (i.e. still very low compression ratio, plus there's bound to be some blow-by) and a cam only slightly larger than stock (peak power at ~4500 RPM) is never going to make a bunch of power. Stock, this motor had ~150 rwhp, so the bump to 250 rwhp is 67%, which is excellent. Factor in losses and this build pretty much duplicates the MY1970 400 hp 500, so not too shabby all in all.

@@salninethousand2496 I agree, over all its pretty impressive, plus it's something you could use as a daily driver if you wanted to. I didn't see how they built the motor. They said in this video, that they put go fast goodies in it. Looks like they bought the cheap go fast goodies. A pony per cube is not an unreasonable ask at all. And that's a naturally aspirated benchmark. Throw in some happy gas and it should be well north of 500 IMO. I don't remember who did it I believe in the 50's. Think it was a Chevy 283 that had one pony per cube.

@Allen Tokyo The Hemi's stock rating wasn't its peak horsepower only the horsepower at that rpm, 425hp@5000rpm, 494hp@5950rpm, same as Chev did with the LS6, they rated it 450hp at a lower rpm when actual was just over 500hp at a higher rpm. Mopars 340 six pack was rated at 290hp when actual was 356hp and with a set of headers jumped to 376hp. Manufacturer ratings were purposely low for government and insurance reasons.

I'm not surprised that the power numbers are kinda low. My friend had a 76 Eldorado with the 500 CID that he tried to turn into a sleeper. He couldn't get it to do what he was expecting it to do,it was a dog. I think he expected it to have alot more power than it ended up with. Eventually he gave up on the Caddy engine and dropped in a mildly Hot Rodded Olds Rocket 455 out of a 70 Vista Cruiser. That engine motivated the Eldorado much better than the Cadillac. I made and welded in the engine mounts. His father used to be really into Oldsmobile cars, and he was part owner of a wrecking yard from 1974 to 1997ish. They had all kinds of cool stuff laying around/ available.

I mean, even without all that modern stuff. A 1976 590 built to factory spec has 397 HP and 488 TQ. These guys just downgraded to 425 heads for some reason, making a "performance build" that actually had less power than stock. The heads don't even line up either, which is why we all watched it blow up at the track the first time they came out to film this (hence the 90 day delay for a reshoot and the "redemption" arc because we all laughed at them.)

They put out less power than this engine had stock. The problem with their build is they used 425 heads which not only have crap compression, they have absolutely TERRIBLE airflow. Even worse, they don't even line up with the 500 block, so when they came out to the track to film this episode the first time, the whole engine blew immediately. So they quickly rebuilt it to refill it a second time (hence the 90 day delay between episodes and the "redemption" arc where they keep talking about "redeeming themselves" now.)

Definitely thinking naturally aspirated would bring in high 300 hp? And then with the boost, maybe 500? Then again, that was useable hp at the rear tires. Take that engine out again, give her a lower massage and maybe increase compression with some new pistons? I would love to see what that old hearse would do with 750 useable hp at the rear tires...

Ya shoulda junked that engine for a earlier one. Double the HP and torque right off the shelf. Balance it & put 11:1 pistons and you'd have gotten 600 hp with happy gas. Rip that sucker out and do it right!

They could also have just thrown a set of off the shelf forged pistons, new rings and bearings in there. If they'd done that, I'm sure there would be at least 60 more horsepower, maybe more. A little more compression, about ten times as good of ring seal.. Those shiny old 1976 cylinder walls and tired rings are no match for nitrous, I mean if you want to do it more than a dozen times. I'm sure it's a gas to drive, but if they'd given it the bottom end to go with the top end-heck, even ball honing the bores and using new rings on the stock pistons-the numbers would have looked a lot better.

@@Bolton115 and put on a set of 1969 heads. Small chamber would have yielded 11:1 compression ratio. That smog engine is a piece of crap.

@@WagsAutomotive and how would that 11:1 cr, more correctly 12:1, have worked out with the stock bottom end and rings? They did a set of 425 heads on the 500, just like I did with my 15,700lbs school bus. That brings static CR up around 9.5 to 1, which would be rad if the tired old rings could have held it. Curious, how many Cadillac engines have you built specifically for heavy vehicles?

if you dont do the bottom end why bother my 1968 coupe devill had 525 torqe and 375 horse stock and would gap that tank badly those things like compression to thats not a chevy they need a very differant tune call maximum torqe specialties all they do is big cads most dyno`s wont test 500 cads below 2000 rpms because the torqe breaks things that thing is worn out get that thing running right and call it ( last run )
