splatoon music theory is sooo yummy thank you for this.....i hope you make more splatoon music videos, its my favorite!! also, brief note, while some people consider this the same thing as traditional japanese music (it isn't, as japan colonised ryukyu - now known as okinawa prefecture - in the 1800s), but shiver's music takes some elements and style from amami & general ryukyuan folk music as well. this is an indigenous style that anna sato (shivers VA) specialises in. i'm no music theorist myself, but off the top of my head some elements are the whistles in the bg of anarchy rainbow and the very long, dancing (cant think of the official term) notes she sustains. i really suggest listening to anna's album with toshiyuki sasaki - beauty and the beat, which is a cool fusion of jazz and amami sound.

Oh 100%. It's one of the most experimental sections of the soundtrack, if not Nintendo's whole mainstream backlog. Especially because I find it has the feeling of like, prolonged stress that you have to sit and manage (like an ethically dubious gig job!) The instruments sound like they're going to run away from each other, like they're discordant and erratic, like too many sounds at once sometimes (in a good way)

i would have never tought how complex splatoon music is
@lilpetz5002 ай бұрын
I've always kind of loved that fact. Like, it's garage band/jpop music, but with that very tangible Nintendo jazz complexity in every moment. Like, every song feels like it can't be just good and catchy, but have at least a few complex music theory details in there. Like, the Idol songs have all had a place in my playlists for being *very* well composed and theme infused jpop, but very hard to share with people because like. Idk if they'll take the cutesy Japanese phonic gibberish vocals seriously (which are also so fun and a genuinely cool music element in themselves)
@poisonmushroom02 ай бұрын
I can definitely see what you mean when you said Blushing Tide is just cool for the sake of cool, but I actually think it's meant to be a capstone of the Squid Sisters' character development across the last 3 Splatoon games! Splatoon 3's Return of the Mammalians has been said to be the finale to the Squidbeak Splatoon saga, which is, most importantly, about Callie & Marie. After all their bickering in Splatoon 1, their falling out between 1 & 2, their battle in 2, and re-connection in 3, I think Blushing Tide is a representation of how far they have come as characters. It's meant to demonstrate how they have finally made amends with eachother despite going through so much and paints a positive outlook for their present & future.
@seltsameseeds2 ай бұрын
yes, 100%!! dang, reading it laid out like that actually makes me feel a lot better about past winning grand fest. they've been through a lot and I'm glad they finally were able to win a splatfest together
@PauLtus_B2 ай бұрын
I think the argument is more that it's not expressing something that interesting musically.
@colour_fall1428 күн бұрын
I love the way the sheet music is colour coded to correspond to who sings that portion of the melody, it's especially satisfying when two characters sing together like in Tidal Rush/Blushing Tide. I was wondering if you''d mention the similarity between Blushing Tide and the Smash Bros remix of Bomb Rush Blush, I headcannoned that Marie got a hold of that version and reharmonised/combined it with Tide Goes out to make Blushing Tide. Also Yes, KK Slider and Big Man would be great friends! (Isabelle and Marina would get on well too)
@LyleLylefrАй бұрын
Another great example of reharm is the like 15 different versions of the “Once Upon a Time” leitmotifs from Undertale. My favorite example is in ‘Hopes and Dreams’ after the key change. That melody right after is pretty much the baseline from ‘Once Upon a Time’. It’s so cool it sounds so good on that guitar.

this was so cool!!!! ive been looking for more splat music theory and this is exactly what i wanted to see, insta subscribe and may these cephalopods continue to bring joy and bangers and dorkery for why they did a reharm of bomb rush/tide goes out, i think there's a strong in universe explanation for why the squid sisters would want to do another version of their solo songs mashup - it's part of them mending their relationship (cause blushing tides released several years after tidal rush right). and the way they've now made a more cohesive song where the solo songs borrow from each other and support each other more evenly works to show us they're on good terms again and have a stronger bond now

i might be shouting into the void here but my favourite splatoon song is endolphin surge. i love the introductory melody & the guitars. a lot of the wet floor music is interesting to me because of the mixtures of styles and the tension based on the in-game guitarists liking different types of music & not always getting along. theres also some influences from squid squad despite one guitarist being a self proclaimed rival of the squid squad guitarist/vocalist, because the other guitarist is a punk fan and likes squid squad. i think some wet floor songs can sound a bit repetitive or feel like theyre lacking something, but i haven't really heard anything else like them in game that meets their highs

As an amateur 0 budget music artist who can barely read sheet music and doesnt actually know music terminology and learns exclusively from trial and error, Trying to make music to fit in the world of splatoon is such a deep and fascinating experience. The bar in splatoon is so incredibly high that i cant hope to match it but im very proud of what ive made and the things ive learned from even just trying it. Then still, i feel like im never quite finished and always have improvements to make, which ends up in me never uploading my stuff because it doesnt feel "done "... Theres no feeling worse than being proud of something, uploading it, learning something that makes you feel really dumb, and hating the version you uploaded, but still feeling like the new version is too simmilar to upload it again

@krill_COАй бұрын
this is why i love splatoon. its like an assimilation of our culture, its so interesting. lorewise its creatures that came after us looking at what we did and going "hey this is kinda cool! lets try and make this!" but they didnt make what we made, they are basically trying to play an instrument after hearing a song once. and its amazing. its like looking at our culture from the outside, and its not just music its a lot of splatoon. fashion and weapons too etc! deep cut exemplifies this! since their music is three cultures in one band. not only do you get that "outside understanding" of each but also we see how they blend together. they dont have the literal cultural limitations of "why would you mix these they are totally different??" its like a kid putting three types of candy in their mouth at once cause they love all three, why wouldnt the mix make you even happier? oh and tidal rush. i love tidal rush! its like what i said about deep cut, but much more dramatic and theatrical. which i eat up and love to analyze in greater detail. how the two personalities clash, but also how they work together because of the fact they are a team. despite the differences they mesh wonderfully. and you already talked about how callie is the much stronger melody, not only is she the story focus but as you said marie is being selfless and trying to save her cousin. (also since callie is hypnotized and by octavio you get more octarian music notes like those big dramatic maybe strings at 27:02 are coolio) i could talk about this forever but im just gonna finish enjoying the video lol, great work please keep posting :33

It feels so weird listening to this through my headphones, since I love listening to the basslines. I usually can't hear them on my monitor (Especially not when trying to win >:3) and the songs feel ENTIRELY different. This video was a good chance to revisit parts I couldn't listen to normally! :D (Oh, and that funny part between recording you and editing you was a good intro to your channel XD)

thank you!! it's mostly gibberish, but rendered in katakana for octarian and hiragana for inkling. it's not really a conlang because word consistency doesn't transfer between songs usually lol

i did some experimenting inspired by Otomo Yoshihide but took it a step further. my idea was to take a standard/extemely well known song and make it as strange as possible whilst still heavily implying the original. things like Ode to Joy became these weird 7 bars of 5/4 in a completely undefinable key, but it's so familiar it is still pretty listenable. fun lil things like this that will probably never see the light of day are still very worth it, i'm extemely comfortable with my music theory knowledge, butbthat dont mean i wont try to take it futher
