Rare tape never before heard...
I was given this tape by the staff after the show (as per tradition) 1 week before finals in 2000.

You guys did such a great job. I liked the part where you played side by side with the other horns and played their keys!

You can tell a music judge is a percussionist when we talks about the percussion having sonority but not that brass. lol

This is a fascinating recording to listen to. Jay Kennedy was at one time DCI's chief judge and also an accomplished music composer, especially TV commercials. He wrote the excellent theme music used for the DCI television broadcasts from 1986 until about 1994. There's a nice feature on him in the 1988 broadcast between Madison and Garfield. Never heard a recording of him judge before - thanks for sharing!

Simple question: he seems to talk a LOT about the scoring. Like, constantly. Is he judging the music arrangements? Or the performance of the music? He only occasionally talks about the execution of it. How is music effect judged? And how is visual effect judged? BTW, this is one of my favorite shows from that era. The EPCOT music is a great find.

Here's an expert for GE Music from this link: www.dci.org/news/dci-judging-101 MUSIC EFFECT 1 This judge sits in the stands and considers how successfully the performers "sell" their musical program (the "book") to the audience, including a consideration of the emotional impact of the presentation. EFFECTIVENESS OF THE REPERTOIRE essentially considers how well the music flows, if the music delivers maximum impact and if it is adequately sophisticated. EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PERFORMERS is all about how well the performers communicate the music to the audience, and if the music is paced well, with a right amount of ups and downs to keep things interesting.

There was a lot of critiques in this tape. How did they go undefeated that season? I love this show because it is what got me into drum corps but what caption kept them undefeated?

I marched that year. The corps wasn't the cleanest but oh my it was exciting. We won GE music every show except finals where we got dumped and lost that caption by quite a bit that night. Finals was probably our worst show in over 3 weeks I'd guess...

@@TheRailwayDrone right?? from a color guard perspective i remember after coming off the field finals night and george asking why we - the entire corps - were so subdued and i could just feel that we all felt it - it was very far from our best - and not just because andy cracked that C 😝😍😘

Judges at the time were used to the sheer volume of G Bugles. Trumpets are highly restrictive of airflow in comparison to their G bugle 3 valve soprano cousins. It just wasn't possible at the time. I'm convinced one of the many reasons DCI went to 150 members max is because hornlines needed to get about 12-16 horns bigger to sound full and effective.

@@N8TheSnake right on the money. I remember back in 2001, I think it was at Philly?, and after we performed I went up into the stands with a few of our brass staff and it was really evident hearing Phantom, and then hearing the Cavies. Like, the difference was huge in terms of sheer impact and volume. I’ve never been and never will be a fan of Bb horns - but man, the power of a G hornline was something and hearing the overtones popping is something I can’t hear as clearly on Bb vs G. I guess to compensate just add another 16-20 bodies.

The context was that he gave them a 1st place score by .4 's in his caption over SCV, It was the last regional before Finals, The Cadets were the top-scoring corps at the time, and he was doing his best to help them take the show as far as they can.
