Reported to The Academy on 3-27-1972 (CTCII72). After 33+ years on The Patrol, I pulled the pin in 2005. My best friend is my Academy classmate from 52 years ago. Was able to convince him to move from Bakersfield to Idaho. We're still hanging out after all these years. You make friends in the Academy that last a life time.

We (CHP) transitioned from mace to OC in the 1990s when I was a sergeant in the Imperial Valley and we all got OCed at a training day. One of my officers sprayed it on a hotdog and ate it to show how tough he was. Fun times.

I remember being exposed to CS gas in Army basic. 41 years later, I still remember that quite vividly. 😂 Thankfully, no tasers or OC spray! You guys are doing great!

With CHP you can, eventually, go anywhere in the state, which you can't do with a local agency.

At my department I got shot with the Tazer probes. Worst 5 seconds of my life but I'd still choose that over OC spray any day...lol

Back when I went through we didn't have OC Spray, we had CS or CN tear gas mace. That makes OC spray seem tame! We had to put our hand on the shoulder of the cadet in front of us when walking through the smoke and nobody better have ran or we all had to go back through it. AH memories! (LOL)

Man this is horrible but necessary to understand how you would react under these circumstances and how well you can function impaired. Also important knowing the affects to know which form force to use in certain situations.

Myself and one other cadet earned our PT shirts back by getting sprayed with bear spray instead of just the regular OC spray. My face burned for a week.

Old shirts. They wear throwaway shirts for OC and tear gas training. After tear gas training we stripped down to our skivvies and tossed everything - clothes, shoes, all of it.

Tasing and OC'ing cadets is dumb (I had to do it in the academy, too). By their rationale, do they get shot with their handguns, to know what THAT feels like too?? No. Dumb.

At some point you'll get a taste of OC as well a taser while in the field....if you're doing your job and not a slug. You'll be glad it wasn't your first taste.

I’ve always wanted to get into becoming a Chp officer but unfortunately I’ve made some mistake I’m not proud of and even though I have a clean record I won’t pass the poly exam due to my past choices, happy for everyone who gets an opportunity at this career 🥲🙏

If u have a clean record then u pretty much have nothing to worry about. Nobody’s perfect and every CHP officer has done something they’re not proud of. It all depends on how long ago it happened. If I were u I’d apply, worst thing that can happen is they say no.

Been in the business for 42 years now and have worked with dozens of officers who "failed" the polygraph at one point in the process. The exam is highly subjective and open to interpretation. I've had several students who were disqualified by one agency and hired by another (some of them in the same week). The one important thing is to be honest in your responses. People mature from bad choices in their youth however dishonesty is a character flaw and that will result in a DQ that is hard to overcome. In the business we say "You lie, you die."

@@markfields2089 thank you sir, for the advise and motivational words. I appreciate your advice a lot, I’m working and studying hard for the test in march for central division. I am pushing myself as much as possible, doing the things I don’t want to do to be where I want to be. Law enforcement has been a dream of mine for sometime now. I am taking action now to reach that dream, thank you 🙏
