I had an inkling of desire to check out Carolina Crown's 2013 performance that continues to stun me to this day, and in looking at top scoring shows of the past, landed on this Cadets show. That's terribly unfortunate, I'll be checking out more of their past shows today.

This is one of the few shows that still absolutely holds up today for me. I find that I can listen to this show any time and not get tired of it. I will never forget hearing that horn line live that year. I "knew" they were going to win as soon as I heard them.

Cadets deserved to win. Incredible book, fast and clean. It's exhausting, just watching them lol. My favorite Cadet show of all-time. My high school played Holsinger the year before (1992) so we were hyped to see the Cadets take it levels higher at Excitement of Sound at Rice Stadium.

This was great, Star was great, but Phantom really had the fans on their side. When you look back in the early 90s the Cadets were really the corp that pushed marching to break neck speeds. As fast as they moved and played was impressive.

mine too. I call it the Holyname Prayer. It's deeply personal to me. I have come to remember that I changed over my marching experience, I became better, and I can continue to do that, in all of life. I remember these notions when I hear this music, as if the music from there until 8:46 is somehow about becoming better, meeting challenges, etc.

@@jaydrose6292 Rebuttal: Crown, "E=Mc^2", 2013. There's a reason they won brass that year and triple-tonguing as *spotless* as that whole closer was a big a part of it. Parts of the mello part of Star '91 were played using the first valve only! That whole opening section with the triplets in the mellos going up four notes and back down was apparently all done on the first valve. According to one guy who marched that year (one of our brass instructors the following year) it was actually *easy* to play- that section, anyway. The closer was another story, obv.

Go listen to Holsinger's original version of this and then come back here and listen again. "Has a more difficult piece of music ever been put on the marching field?" Cadets, "10", closer. Shostakovitch's 10th is *ridiculously* difficult and they performed it at tempo, something even most *professional* ensembles shy away from when it's performed. The only thing that would have impressed me more is if they had included *any* of the second movement from that work; it's been described as 'the most treacherous and diabolical 4.5 minutes in all of orchestral music'. I can see why they didn't; it doesn't mean much musically when it's taken out of context and is really almost a punctuation mark (an exclamation point, at that) in the overall symphony. It's also *dreadfully* exposed in the winds, and while those parts could make for an interesting and difficult front ensemble feature there's not all that much there for brass to do.
@voiceofreason9238

@@KyleNally I saw "10" live on the field. Incredible show. If you think it's the most difficult thing ever put on a field I bow to your better judgement. :) BTW I also love the entire Shostky 10 which I've listened to many times, thanks to being introduced to it by The Cadets.

Funny, but in doing that, I came to be a fan of the closer, Ballet Sacra, far more the In The Spring itself. :) (it;s also the music with the drumline back field at a different tempo. Coolest Thing Ever.)

For some reason, all tracks on the official 1993 DVD except Star are encoded in Dolby Surround Pro Logic, with a left, right, and surround center channel. I was only able to get this working correctly on an older Marantz amplifier, but for some reason, the surround center channel is mapped to the front center speaker. Either way, it results in everything being much cleaner when the appropriate speakers are disabled.

Yea, I saw this show live early in the season and it was phenomenal. Everything that lacked in ‘92 was better in this show. Cleaner drill, better horn line, better marching in general. I think I can get away saying that as I marched ‘92 and instantly loved the show. June scores and the win are great but this show was fun, technical, and still a favorite after all these years.

I don't think there has ever been a harder show. if there is one complain I have with new shows is the definitely program them to be attainable. wish they would make shows that are high risk and semi uncleanable to be honest. there is some fun to rising to the occasion despite the show being insanely hard.

The level of difficulty is much greater then than today. Why is that?
@averagecadetsenjoyer
@averagecadetsenjoyer Жыл бұрын
I think it just looks much more difficult because of the style of marching. Before there was so much emphasis on having really straight legs when moving it was easy to tell they were moving very fast because they not only were running, they looked like they were running. Nowadays it's not as obvious. The difficulty is not so in your face but is definitely there. Watch something like Cadets 2015 and it might not look as hard as this but if you find a headcam video you can see how much they are really moving.

@cavie95 You hit the nail on the head! If there is a drill at all, you can’t see it because of all the props they have to maneuver around. I loved watching Zingali, Brubaker, etc charts that you can tell weren’t produced mindlessly with technology but raw with whatever spewed from their amazingly creative brains. Cross to Cross, Z-pull, Cavies and their spinning diamonds and triangles. It was beautiful!

There's so much acrobatics (music and movement), subtle storytelling (I hate having story shoved down my throat and narrated or over-acted), and just general BADA$$ERY going on here.. Crown 23 is growing on me...and of course they can't NOT add the CROWN Formation at end!

Yes!!!!!!! Now this is real drum corps. They way the corps are now it looks like they are doing ballet while playing. I think it looks terrible. It takes away from the show in general I think. And all the corps over emphasize these ballet moves. Now this show is a “in your face” show. The music speaks for itself. They don’t have to do these weird up and down side to side seizures while playing to make it good. I just can’t stand to watch DCI now. Very disappointing!!!

@@cbmeandher7084 Cadets have done limited body movements previously. However, it does appear that nowadays a horn player needs a degree in dance in order to join a top Corps. While the shows can be impressive, I feel that Drum Corps has lost some of its special uniqueness in its efforts to advance the activity.
