The first time i got to drive on a race track i was 27, and it made me realize i should have built a cheap week-end racer long ago. I was disappointed in myself for not trying it sooner, because it felt so at home and my misconception that i needed a fast sports car to have fun and learn the sport/craft had held me back from experiencing and learning first hand something i've always loved (cars and racing). my advice for anyone who is into driving or cars is, find a cheap ass car (i recently built a 93 integra cheaply with a friend for this purpose) and do some basic stuff (sport or race brake pads, high temp brake fluid, grippy tires if you can afford them, and build from there slowly, no rush to have a fully built car from the get go) and allow yourself to get seat time, nothing beats it, and i guarantee you, you'll ask yourself why you didn't do it sooner.

Yeah I've heard that alot that the best track car and actually can drive better than a fast sports car is a miata. Theyre nimble, handle great, light, and relatively cheap. Ive seen videos of them out driving lambos on a track. An integra would also be a great car.

@@brandonlang9322 Miatas and e36/e46 bimmers are great for rwd affordable platforms, and for fwd there are a bunch of hondas, nissans and so on that are cheap fast platforms. to give you perspective, last time we took out our integra, which makes about 20hp over stock and is about 200lbs lighter from stripping it out and has basic suspension and brake mods etc, was keeping up with 100k dollar sports cars. my friend was driving and while not a seasoned veteran, isn't a beginner either, and those other drivers mostly were beginners in the group he was in.

No man, every Cadillac built on the alpha chassis is a world class sports car chassis. The previous gen ats-v and cts-v were the real game changers. These cars are just updated versions of the old cars, same chassis and motors.

Well Cadillac set the standard for luxury cars in the way that it's kind of the car that sets the bar for what a Luxury car should be. Less it's about saving money, more is about money being no object but if you want a Luxury car that is everything a Luxury car should be at the price you would expect Cadillac was the brand that met that expectation. Are they that now? I don't know, I guess that's up to the buyer to decide.

Yup, modern "automatics" - ie anything not a full manual - are quicker, but having a gear lever one feels so much more part of the car, especially when nailing the gear changes.

Yeah. It's insane that out of literally every premium "sports" sedan, only 1 has a manual with the big engine, and REAR WHEEL DRIVE ONLY :). Mercedes E-class? Nope. BMW m5 or 550? Nope. Audi? (Don't care anyways) Ford doesn't make a rwd v8 car. Lexus only has autos too. They single-handedly won this market segment for those who like having involvement, and a v8, but need 4 doors for business reasons.

Hpde events are few hundred bucks and you get the whole day and put with awesome instructors for free. All you need is opentrack or hagerty insurance for peace of mind. Track days aren’t expensive, tires last at least 9 or 10 track days, brakes twice that, just change the fluid every couple months. Do like 5 or 6 events a year, it’s pretty inexpensive.

Rob don't be afraid to downshift to get some engine braking for the corners, it saves your brakes and allows you to brake later as well, it will also be in a better gear for accelerating hard out of the corners

Whilst I tend to agree, the motorcyclist in me wants to parrot what's often said on them, brakes are a lot cheaper and easier to replace than engines. There are of course a few other reasons why its ill advised on a bike such as the potential to lock the rear etc... Anyway Zach, have a great weekend brother!

I personally drive more like you suggest than like I described for a motorcycle. I do however also believe that the brakes are there for a reason! It's all a big balancing act dependent on too many variables for me to make a blanket call on, but if you are looking deeply at the data and analyzing it turn by turn you are in a far better position to comment than I am! I used to own a Boxster Turbo S and I had to get rid of it. Driving it on the street was an exercise in frustration. It was so capable but the second you started to test it’s limits you were quickly into very illegal speeds. A couple of grand a few days a year spent on track days is so much more fun. You get to let the cars sing and do what they were built for. Way more fun, cheaper and you keep your licence intact.

Rob I’m so glad you enjoyed the track events. There great! I’ve been wanting to do one of the Cadillac ones myself. I’ve done a few of them. BMW, Mercedes and a Toyota one. The BMW events get pro drivers. One of my instructors was racing the weekend before at VIR for the Factory Team and have the whole session. I highly recommend the BMW events. I did a event at my local track Road Atlanta in the 2016 M cars. I did 165 on the back straight fully unlocked in the m5 competition they let me drive. It was the first time I ever had felt carbon ceramic brakes unbelievable. The instructor was like please slow down 😜. I hope to do the Porsche experience maybe in a few years since I’m here in the Atlanta area. Anyways I’m glad you got the road course bug now 👍🏻

I have been debating on buying a CT4 BW. Seems to be the perfect replacement for my '11 SHO. Also, the performance per dollar metric of the CT4 BW is really good. The CT4 MSRP is in the high 50s - mid 60s and my SHO was 53k new.

My 2011 SHO cost be 2k in repairs over the 11 years and 120000 miles i owned it. It was definitely no mistake. I think you should test the BW and its European counterparts out for a spin and see what fits your style. As for an ss camaro....that comment was the only mistake i see made here...

The "Mistake" here is you fail to realize there is a reason I like 4 Door performance sedans. I need rear seats that can be occupied, and trunks space. @@bcnr33lp22 I am at 90k miles on mine - and all I have had to do to it was injectors (known issue.) I did the motor mounts and replaced the trans torque mounts with aftermarket heavy duty ones (not the car's fault) due to me occasionally drag racing / autocrossing it after it being retuned / downpipes / exhaust. All in all for a car that (modded) has been 12.7xs in the quarter , and places consistently in the top 10s at the goodguys sunday autocrosses (beating out all the late model camaros, challengers, chargers, and mustangs) it has been a great car. It has been modded / retuned since 40k miles without a single issue other than the injector replacement (which was ~600 in parts and an afternoon of my labor.) It has proven more reliable (and comfortable) than my S4, M3, and a couple other cars I have previously owned. Best part is it is invisible to cops, thieves, and dildo street racers.

Many manufacturers are getting ahead of themselves imo. The craze around EVs is super profitable but the reality is that a gradual movement toward electrifying fleets is much smarter for long term profitability and success

EVs can be fun, I think they will catch on in motorsports once they improve the charging situation at racetracks and figure out how to make them lightweight to avoid chewing up tires. I suspect in another 30 years the motorsports enthusiasts will think about gas/diesel engines the same way we think of carburetors and distributors today; interesting history and fun to see but not the best way to go fast. I'm a fan of the recent Mazda hybrid patent with a couple of EV motors, a small/cheap/light battery, and a rotary engine, hopefully that gets built.

That's the reason why my last new car was a Ford Fiesta ST. It was one of the least expensive "performance" cars, the suspension is great but it's not so fast that driving at 7/10ths isn't possible on the street. It's near perfect for autocross which is probably the cheapest motorsport there is and it was also great on The Horse Thief Mile which is a tight, technical track with lots of corners but the track days aren't terribly expensive there. The car is fast enough to get you in to tremendous legal troubles on the street and fun enough that you'll be tempted to drive like that but it's also a pretty useful daily driver with 4 doors, fold down rear seats and the hatch. It's hard to add more useable power without a turbo swap and that gets pretty expensive (tunes increase low end torque which mostly makes wheel spin) but the thing I want most on mine is better brakes because fade becomes an issue on tight tracks and Autocross layouts with a lot of braking. Once I have a machine shop to make some rotor hats and caliper brackets, I know the parts I want to reduce unsprung weight, increase cooling, increase swept area without spending a huge fortune and still fitting under my light weight 16" wheels and BFG Rivals (stock is 17" and about 8lbs heavier per wheel with a very short sidewall). A LSD is another improvement because the traction control uses the ABS to stop tire slip so letting the diff do that will reduce the load on the brakes... If you do it all, big turbo, ethanol, diff, brakes and maybe some suspension work, you can get a 400hp monster that looks like an economy car with a set of rims. If you make some of the parts yourself and do the installs, that's probably $9-12,000 plus the car which is probably 1/4 the price of the Cadillac you liked but much more fun and useable on the street, good at autocross and fun at cheaper track days.

I know people shit on it, but I've gotta recommend autocross for seat time and learning to drive at the limit. You have so much more fear on a track where there is real risk if you spin or go off. Autocross allows you to slam the car right up to limit, spin, whatever. It's very little about line and most about braking, accelerating, shifting, and getting the car turned effectively. Plus it's far less expensive! If you take your CTS-V and tire it up within stock class rules, it'd be a good way to judge how your driving is progressing.

Or run the FC, autocross is also EXCELLENT for dialing in a project car. It's low speed, not crashy, and you're not out tons of cash if you break down and miss most the event. And by 'tired up' I mean ""200tw"" tires like the falken rt660.

It can't reliably drive for 60k miles without serious engine refresh. And in the present day we expect daily driver to last at least 100k miles.

Not going to lie, after a few months of only driving dads 5 speed danger ranger and my rx8 6 speed i hopped in my brothers f150 and i had trouble finding the automatic shifter while i was looking in the mirror. I was trying to move the handle on the steering column instead of it being a floor shift and i also tried to clutch it when i got in.

Awesome experience! I would like to run my stock 2010 CTS-V sedan with no moonroof, around that track. I did take it to Milan dragway it managed a 12.56 @ 114 mph!

Also, the reality of mining the REMs for fancy futuristic batteries is starting to be realized, and people don't really like seeing the environment and people being exploited by corporations. being old school and hearing some one call a caddy a track weapon seemed so funny to me. all I could imagine was a 1960 Cadillac body rolling around a track at 40 miles an hour and I had to laugh. then I remembered the little 80's ones and imagined one with a proper suspension set up and all wheel drive conversion ripping it up at well over a hundred thru the corners. Cadillacs have gone thru a lot of changes over the years to were there actually a drivers car now and not just about the Cushy interior. I still preferer the battle boats thou

Pahrump....grew up in that shit hole, just be thankful your there in winter. I moved in 05 so i never got to experience that track. As a teen though the offroading was my only escape, Narcs would stop ya but if you didn't have drugs on ya they didn't give a shit as far as driving goes.

Regarding the expense of track days, karting is an incredibly cost effective way to get seat time thats translatable to cars.

Track days and especially driver training track days are the best way to learn the limits of the car and yourself and get better at driving on a track and also give you better skills as a driver on the road too.

Skip Barber put out a book on the art and science of driving quite awhile ago. It's called "Going Faster." It starts with fundamentals, and gets into the weeds of technicality of driver input vs car set up - so an engineering mind can see all the variables at play between a driver and their car... I read it through many times and each time picked up something new. Cannot recommend it enough hope you can find a copy.
