GAC have been on something of a design revolution of late and their 'diamond-cut' styling looks no more stunning than on the imposing GS8 SUV. But that mammoth grille and chiselled looks are nothing to be feared, for while the GS8 is all flash outside, it's comfort and refinement all the way once you're on the move. A silky smooth 2.0-litre engine mated with an electric motor helps the GS8 move 6 or 7 people with ease, and for a quite remarkable price. Possibly the most distinctive people mover out there.

Mega Wave Power tech is a water cooled intercooler. Basically just normalizes the air temperature for combustion.

I believe it is in some other countries, though most are not your traditional western markets. Whether they go to Europe sometime hasn't yet really been discussed.

Hello. What's the price of petrol/diesel and electricity per kWh in China? Weirdly nobody talks about costs of running fuel vs electric cars per km. Also do kWh prices vary in between households and commercial car chargers in China? Thank you.

It really depends on where you are in the country. I believe smaller towns have cheaper fuel. Diesel isn't used here for passenger cars though, only some buses and I think trucks, though these are increasingly going either electric (especially buses, I'd say the majority are electric in big cities now and some smaller ones), or even going to fuels like methanol which is very cheap. Unleaded was around $1.16 a litre last time I remember. For commercial charging, the price can vary a lot. At the weekend I used a Shell charging station that was just 1.13RMB ($0.16) per kW, meaning a full charge from 0 on a 100kW battery (a big one) would be just $16, so quite a bit cheaper than petrol. I don't think I've seen energy over $0.32 per kW anywhere commercially. Afraid I can't tell you the price of home charging as I haven't got a clue, I don't even know what my energy bill is as my wife deals with that.

@@InsideChinaAuto thank you for all the useful information. What was the mileage of that 100kWh battery car if you don't mind me asking? BTW I'm in Thailand and here $0.16 is the price of a household kWh. No idea what the commercial chargers ask. Also they are very scarce here. Only larger petrol stations have them, 1 or 2 at most. Electric cars are not a thing here yet, but can see some here and there.

@@no_clot_shot1128 I used 100kWh as an example since that's generally as big as they get at the moment, minus a few exceptions going over that, so for most cars it would be smaller than that. I was actually driving a car with a tiny 17kWh battery at the time so it cost just over $2 to charge from 12% to full. 100kWh battery cars tend to have about 500-750km claimed range, of course on varying cycles so it's hard to compare like for like. My general experience is real world numbers are about 60-80% of claimed totals, but again depends on what system they claim on, whether it's NEDC, WLTP or CLTC. In order, I think CLTC is the most generous, then WLTP, then NEDC is most accurate, but still some way off as they always are.

I'd always thought that the title of 'blingiest SUV in China' belonged to the Hongqi with its HS9 or LS7. The Interior of the GS8 is also a bit conservative when you compare it to the Geely Xingyue L or the new CS95.

You make a fair point. The e-HS9 and LS7 are pretty...wow. I'd maybe call them a bit more chintzy though because they're not the bling most consumers want but the traditional look luxury that business owners of a certain age in China look for. But yeah, the interior is definitely less blingy than some, bit too much plastic but not bad.

@@InsideChinaAuto It is kitschy but that is the point of Bling, ain't it? The whole material excessiveness of it. You can't really make a clear-cut reserved or minimalistic aesthetic bling bling, anymore than you can make a 24 carat gold suit debonair.

Undoubtedly. The petrol EMKOO for example felt really underpowered and lethargic but this was much more responsive thanks to the battery assistance, like a totally different car.

It's a tough one. I like the L9 too and I think it's more premium and smarter inside, but this thing does have some epic presence.
