You can't beat a genuine Cadmium red. The cadmium yellows are also superb colours. All lightfast, brilliant and gorgeous. 5 star.

I love my warm reds. I would choose the Winsor & Newton Cadmium-Free Scarlet as an alternative for myself. It's more safe for me since I got that allergy. My favorite warm reds are still PR255 and PR188. They also have different names in different brands. I'm also quite open to try new warm reds. Maybe I will find a new one that I like better.

I don't really use warm reds all that often but I like one available in case I need it. Are the W&N Cadmium free paints supposed to mimic the cadmium paints? Do you think they succeed?
@Christine_R
@Christine_R 2 жыл бұрын
@@JayNathanWatercolor Yes they are cadmium "imitations" and I know that Daniel Smith don't offer any cadmiums they call their alternative like "Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue" and it's the same with their Cadmium Red type colors. Schmincke don't have that option but they have a lot of other colors to choose that look really similar.

I looked into the cadmium free colors from WN and they look lovely, but WN won't give any pigment information on them for some reason, so I found non cadmium alternatives. They don't look the same or act the same, but at least the company is willing to say what is in them, or at least wiling to claim some of the ingredients. lol

Here's a pigment I'm clueless about, haha! I only have White Nights and I like it. The Rembrandt and W&N paints look lovely here! In the past I had been using PR188 and PR112 but I read they are not always lightfast. At the moment I have PO73 from Mijello in my palette as a warm red.
@JayNathanWatercolor
@JayNathanWatercolor 2 жыл бұрын
I've not tested it but others have told me that PR122 isn't lightfast. The Mijello PO73 is Red Orange isn't it? Looks interesting.

The only Cadmiums I have in my palette are Yellows. Thank you for your comparisons! I felt like you didn't use as much pigment in the Roman Szmal sample. Maybe because it was a pan. I absolutely love Roman Szmal's Quinacridone Scarlet PR N/A and Pyrrole Scarlet PR255 (also Daniel Smith's Pyrrol Scarlet PR255) for my warm reds. I did really like the Winsor & Newton swatches, especially the dispersion.

You're very welcome ☺️ You're right about the Roman Szmal. I think all the paints I got from pans probably needed a little more pigment on the brush.

Great comparison. I must admit, I don't use PR108, though I am tempted by the Schmincke ultra-granulating Volcano Red (PR108), just for the extra granulation for mixing. My warm red is pyrrole scarlet PR255 (Rman Szmal) or scarlet pyrrole PO73 (M.Graham) and pyrrole red PR254 (M.Graham) for a more mid red. I'm reasonably happy mixing reds as I don't tend to use much of them on their own. I use more of the earth reds.

I have the Winsor & Newton light scarlet and the DaVinci medium red but they are not on my palette. I use pyrol scarlet from Daniel Smith and Quin. Coral for my warm reds. It isn’t because of the cadmium thing. Some might want to check the lightfastness of the cadmium free paints because usually they are plant based and will fade. I jump from Quin. Coral to the DaVinci permanent alizarin crimson and stay with the quin family when able. But I do use Cobalts and Cadmium lemon and yellow ochre to grey down mixes which the Cadmiums do well. Thank you for sharing the swatches. I find it interesting.

The issue also with Cadnium is that if you are out and about and need to get rid of your watercolour water, it is a worry as Cadnium is toxic to rivers. So more people are now choosing to avoid Cadnium because of the environment as well as minor health issues. Great Review though Jay. Thank you.

Hi Jay! I don’t have a favourite warm/middle red yet. I think I’d like to try a PR254 or a PR209. I currently use Van Gogh’s PR149. It’s nice but tends to go brown as it dries. Its a good complement for PB15, though.

I love the granulation in D Vincis Cad reds tho I have to admit I prefer the Rembrandts in this video, they are just incredible- too bad they stopped making them; perhaps ill try getting Rembrandts newest Cad reds and see if I like them. I dont know why but i love Cadmium Reds; especially Cadmium Scarlet/Vermillions..Anyway great video, thanks for sharing 💙

Interesting... perhaps it's better to use cad reds straight from the tube! I've just started exploring the cadmiums a few months ago. I don't have all the shades yet but I'm working on that LOL. Loving Cad Yellow Lt from M. Graham, and Cad Yellow & Red Mediums from Qor. Qor does the cadmiums really nicely and the colors are usually very intense, but I have not seen these compared to the brands you have here. Perhaps I can find a comparison video if I go looking. I especially love Cad Yellow Lt as a lemon; I think the opacity softens it a lot. I also really love the mix of Cad Red Med and Cobalt Turquoise. It makes a beautiful lively speckled medium grey that granulates and separates. Give it a try!

I watched the Prussian blue video first, it was in my feed, and then realized there was this video too. Unbeknownst to be I was unsubscribed to your channel. I'm not sure why or how this happens to people, being unsubscribed to channels they LIKE to watch, but KZbin should either fix it, if it unintentional, or stop it, if intentional. It's truly irritating if you don't figure it out as easy as I did this. It happened on another channel I watched and I couldn't remember exactly how to spell the persons name and it took forever to find their channel again. I watch all your videos. Even the ones on colors I don't use, Prussian Blue and Cadmiums, lol. It's a good thing you have an easy name so I will be able to find you again if KZbin starts trying to make decisions for me again. P.S. It's not the toxicity on the Cads but rather the opaqueness but I have begun to shift on that so maybe I will be trying some Cads in the near future.

There is an effect that annoyed me with some paints: they seem to granulate when they are dispersing and then, when they dry all the granulation is lost. This effect is very obvious in this video. At first I thought it could be some noise from the camera but it happens al the time when you start swatching the next color. Have you ever notice that? It is such a pity that there aren't many granulating reds...

Thanks so much for sharing! I like the same ones you chose here. I have never found any Cadmium reds (PR108) more vibrant and amazing than Holbein. I have W&N, Schmincke, M Graham and my Holbein just looks brighter, fresher, cleaner and even a less opaque than my others. This was great seeing a few others I don't have. Love your channel. Have you tried a variety of Cad Lemons?

I haven’t been a Cadmium lover until recently when I splurged and got Holbeins “Vermillion” pr108 and it is absolutely gorgeous! I have had Schmincke and Sennelier Cadmium reds for a few years but never used them much. I have those only in the middle amd deep red shades. I do love the color of Cadmium red deep/purple straight out of the tube and paired with indigo, it’s a gorgeous color duo. But yes, that Holbein Cadmium is the cadmium of all cadmium’s! Lol

@@JayNathanWatercolor I keep noticing that my W &N cadmium yellow lemon kept cracking out on my palette and therefore compared it side by side and working with the DaVinci cadmium lemon and was pleasantly surprised by it. I use it for my neutral yellow than use Azo yellow which is a very little bit darker then I jump to Hanza deep which is more lightfast than the light Hanza. Anyways DaVinci stays creamy and I don’t dump crumbs on the floor anymore.

I have a beautiful cad red deep from prismacolor. I wish it could have been added to your swatches, it seems closer to the winsor newton cad deep but a bit darker. Prismacolor no longer makes professional watercolor tubes so i am fortunate to have a couple tubes of this and the cadmium lemon which is also nice and vibrant.

Thank you so much for sharing. I am a bit confused. I am sure that some time ago I was looking at the WnN range and I was told by the shop, that WnN is not making cadmium colors anymore. Because of the toll on the environment and the people who have to harvest it. Was I just misinformed? Or have they started again? However I have some Cadmium Yellows, but for the Reds I prefer all the Pyrrols. I am mostly using Qor and Schmincke and I love them.

Awesome comparison even though I dont really use cad reds. Those Rembrandts are stunning and packed with color, but the 1st one has the added pigment. I prefer the more red leaning than orange leaning pigments. My favorite reds are Winsor Red PR254, MG Napthol Red, DS Quin Red, and more recently Winsor Red Deep. Cadmiums are a whole different animal, but I wonder if their particle size is a bit larger? I too notice some slight granulation in the thin swatches. TFS this great video. I might reconsider Cads. 😄
