The reason Cadwelds are used is because it is a permanent, buriable connection, maintenance free. Clamp-on connections are supposed to remain above ground so you can check/maintain tightness, conenction ,etc.

What if you just leave the mold? Would it be useful as extra protection?

Any idea what the metal disc is for?

+SkyCharter Probably to keep the powder off the wires until it is ignited, allowing the molten material to burn through the disc and fall onto the copper wires.

I thought the disc is what melted and welded everything together
