Caedmon's Hymn - Blake Wilson (Cardinal Singers)

'Caedmon's Hymn' is the earliest known Old English poem, written sometime between 658 and 680. Performed by the University of Louisville Cardinal Singers under the direction of Dr. Kent Hatteberg at our National ACDA preview concert on February 19, 2017.
Text and Translation:
Nu sculon herigean heofonrices weard, Now we must honor the guardian of the heaven,
meotodes meahte ond his modgeþanc, the might of the Architect and His mind's purpose,
weorc wuldorfæder, swa he wundra the work of the Father of Glory, as He for each of the
gehwæs, wonders,
ece drihten, or onstealde. the eternal Lord, established a beginning.
He ærest sceop ielda bearnum, He shaped first for the sons of man
heofon to hrofe, halig scyppend; heaven as a roof, the Holy Creator;
þa middangeard moncynnes weard, then the Middle-Earth, mankind's Guardian
ece drihten, æfter teode the eternal Lord, Afterward made,
firum foldan, frea ælmihtig. solid ground for men, the Lord almighty.
