We love to see it. I am especially happy to see this discussion of how diagnosis is actually a really good thing. People often assume that the autism label will be really bad for someone, but the reality is that somebody like us is going to have the same problems whether they have the label or not. Without the label, it's much harder for them to find solutions, and don't even understand why they have these issues. Having the diagnosis helps a lot. I'm really happy to hear that it's helping him.

I made the same transition as Rekkles is trying to make in that I stopped trying to be 'normal' and it did wonders for me and the people I live and work with. I realized that trying to please, adjust or try to be like others actually made me a a less fun person to be around, cause it made me a stressed and frustrated person. I never got tested but it's just something that for me came with age and introspection and I think this advice is very valuable for everyone, not just people i 'the spectrum'. It's simply knowing who you are, accepting it and become a better version for yourself and a a result a better version of yourself.

What i've learned especially from having gotten the diagnosis is that most things at least for me are connected to having control. If there's a problem that I can't get out of my head until it's resolved, it's usually because I have no control over the problem or what the person might do with the problem. Having a highly detailed schedule with little change also gives a lot of stability and control.

@@noahnas1587 Yeah, I might have the same diagnosis but there's no point then in having it be "official" because I already knew those things about myself. I like stability, same routines every day, planned stuff, having control of the situation and not having drastic changes regularly. I also have high sensitivity to external stimuli which usually translates to not being very comfortable in places with very high noises (kinda difficult in Spain, a country notorious in Europe for having VERY loud conversations...). This has made me a "weird" person in my job and many social situations but I never bothered to do the same things as the rest, I knew from years ago what works for me and what doesn't and if I have to be the party popper, leave parties early or not go to parties at all to feel good so be it.

@Daniel-bs8vb2 ай бұрын
you would think so, but late diagnosis is actually quite common. Many people with level 1/high functioning autism are good at "masking", which is where you have trained yourself (often unconsciously) to act more "normal" or "neurotypical" in order to blend in and be more accepted in society. Plus, psychologists much like medical doctors are not all-knowing, and generally have a much greater understanding of a specific area of psychology/medicine. I would imagine the psychologists they hire are more trained in sports psychology than neurodivergence.

With my son, he wakes up about the exact time every morning and has to have either cereal or a doughnut for breakfast, goes to school, comes home n needs an hr to unwind on his games. After that hes pretty flexable on what we do, but bed time is 9:30-10:00. If hes misses that window, it shows the following day a lot. Rekky saying its like he bsod and has to reboot was a great analogy to describe how 1 little thing can just ruin a day and you cant get it out of your head. Thats my son to a T as well. The informations actually are not completely correct. There still ist the Asperger Diagnosis, and it is still used in the medical context and the ICD10 Coding system (F84.5). The thing is, that the common ppl started to think that every autistic person has Asperger. That’s why they started to use the term high functioning autism, to clarify that it’s not all the same. But in a medical context many still use the term Asperger. All though even if high functioning autism is used as a term for Asperger not every Asperger is really “high functioning” there are many Aspergers with an average or below average intelligence who need a person by there side to get the basics of there life done.
