As an engineering student in the US, ethics classes are mandatory to become an engineer and are incredibly important in our field. An engineering program can't be accredited without ethics classes. (please please PLEASE do not take this as a pro-JP take!) In and of itself, I'd say a response along the lines of "thank you for sharing/your honesty, let's explore this in more detail in session" is ok, especially if you don't want to basically conduct a therapy session via email (for all kinds of reasons from cyber security to not wanting to have such a sensitive conversation without the immediacy of an in-person session) and you certainly don't want to reply with shaming or judgement along the lines of "that's so wrong of you - find a new therapist NOW". As mentioned in the video, transference is a not uncommon phenomenon in therapy, and it CAN be dealt with in a sensitive and ethical (!) manner during therapy, so nonchalance can actually help with keeping things professional, given the right context. What was missing here is less the tone of the email and more the lack of a proper and professional follow-up. Then again, "proper and professional" aren't the first words that come to mind when it comes to JP, so I guess no surprises there... Again, not denying that how he handled the situation overall was pretty damn shitty, just wanted to give some context for how a seemingly nonchalant tone may actually be a valid choice.

That apple cider bit lives in my head rent free. You can clearly see that Joe Rogan is not buying the initial bit about cider knocking JP out, so JP quickly upps the stakes by saying he didn't sleep for a month, before realizing he overdid it, but unable to retract, he has to go with it. Actually, if you watch on, JP did backpedal on the not sleeping for a month claim, admitting that he did sleep for shorter periods. But, for someone telling his dupes that they should speak clearly, he sure always fails at it. Not to mention the bigger issue that the effects he experienced were quite obviously due to his medication rather than apple cider. As a big aside, whenever JP's dumb claim is brought up and people are incredulous about someone not sleeping for a month, I have to bring up an example that for some reason is not well known in the Anglosphere (I read it in German magazine Der Spiegel). It did happen to a Swiss air traffic controller some 25 years ago that he just couldn't sleep any more from one day to another. This lasted not for one but _several_ months, during which time he lost his job, wife and nearly his sanity. He tried all kinds of cures until he happened upon a university research professor, who was first incredulous until the man was put into a lab where they could observe that he really doesn't sleep a minute. This researcher had the idea to look for bacteria in the patient's cerebrospinal fluid, and found an otherwise harmless one that doesn't normally get there. After administering antibiotics, the guy could sleep again.

Yeah? Maybe it's because I'm old (holy fuck...I'm going to be 39 in a few months!) but I have no problem with someone being self taught. Well, hm, "problem" is too strong a word. Maybe saying, "It doesn't phase me," is a better term to use. I even hold a degree in English literature! I'm such a literature, grammar, and writing snob I failed 5 kids out of the Lit. Department since passing a grammar test was required. It was graded on a MASSIVE curve as well, as the high school kids were coming to college with really poor skills. Skills so lacking that if they didn't implement the curve they'd have no students left to teach. Basically, the highest grade was turned into a 100 and the differential was applied to everyone's test. For example, if the highest grade was a 60, it was turned into a 100 and everyone's test got 40 points applied to it. You had two chances. The first test I got a 95 and the second test I got a 98, so everyone got 5 and 2 points added respectively. Let's just say I was not particularly popular with those kids who weren't invited into the degree track. With everyone else I was practically a god, a walking legend perhaps. They all made sure they were nice to me too since, because I worked so quickly on everything and was usually finished with all my assignments weeks early, I had time to look over their stuff before it was handed in. All that to say, I respect the self taught. It takes a certain kind of person, a special kind of person you don't see every day, to hack it. I would bet cash money Caelan not only had the gift, but they're open to LISTENING (goddamn it people can we do more of that please?) and taking criticism to head and heart. All you kids out there who have taught yourself media literacy on your own have this little grammar Nazi's respect. Remember how special you are, but most of all, never, EVER stop learning! I love you all! The fact you watch content like Caelan's shows you can detect classy, high quality, and exceptionally crafted writing and presenting. PS - Wanna really impress people? For example the werewolf in question didn't even have enough relevancy to be helpless till the story was stretched out and a love triangle was added.

It seems to me, those are popular archetypes due to literature and tv since the 90's. At first, Anne Rice. Then, Whedon. Now, YA literature and Grey's Anatomy and well, the other Grey. On the other hand, there is Titanic, Bodyguard. Seems to me that romances with a Fabio cover where about women dating below their social class. I m not sure about medieval literature but it seems to me that it is court ladies being seduced by knights. I m not sure who was considered above in social standing. AO3 romances are mainly written by women. A lot of them are romances between men. It s hard to say with which character the author identify the most. But for one bilionaire story, there is a coffee shop AU or a surviving zombie apocalypse story. It would be more interesting to understand why published fictions nowadays are about predatory and powerful men.

He’s such a caricature that I’m still not entirely convinced Peterson isn’t a tulpa accidentally manifested from Mark McKinney’s repressed id. All of the rage papered over by his upper crust affability given form, which has since gone on to far exceed its initial purpose of simply being able to vocalize Mark’s discomfort when his blood sugar is low or he finds one of Kevin’s sketches slightly tedious. Until I see Mark get close enough to Jordan to attempt to reabsorb him, I don’t think it’s wise to rule that out completely.

If you know anything about Jung, it becomes even funnier, because it is just a paraphrasing of the Shadow, and Peterson considers himself a Jungian scholar, while massively misunderstaning Jung, lol. (P.s. Mate's comments about "mandating language" I am not sure about how to read, just saying... I personally feel some sarcasm in it, as in 'yeah little buddy, you can use the words you want!'.. while everyone knows nothing is being mandated, so it reads as a jab at Peterson for fighting an imagined enemy... but still kinda sus)

The crux with Peterson's self help advice is that the helpful "rules" are pretty basic, like "clean up your room", "develop a daily routine" and so on. It's just pretty generic stuff that most people learn from their parents or at school. Peterson just needs more words to promote those ideas. And Peterson's "rules" are also interwoven with bad advice, such as "don't let your kids do something that upsets you". That's just not how being a parent works. If fact, I could easily turn that into my own "rule for life": "A good idea that comes attached to a bad idea probably isn't very good."

As a therapist myself, I think his behavior is appalling, but not at all surprising given how he conducts himself in other spheres of his life. We work with people at some of the lowest, and most vulnerable periods of their lives. Many people who seek out therapy have relational trauma. To be neglected in such a way by a therapist can be deeply retraumatizing, and can cause them to be afraid to ever trust another mental healthcare professional. Who can blame them? I certainly can't. I frankly think there needs to be stricter standards on who is allowed to become a therapist, given the risk of harm to clients. Clearly, in the case of JP, a lot of the red flags were glossed over or explained away, and people got hurt. His clients deserved so much better, and I truly hope they are able to move forward on their healing journey despite the harm he caused them.

i can't wait to watch this video of a supremely normal man who's just a relaxed and completely reasonable Dude with no Weirdass opinions on anything whatsoever, who also definitely only speaks on issues he's knowledgeable of /j

As a fellow Canadian enby it's been a real treat to have been directed toward your videos. This has been no less insightful than all else, and I continue to be greatly impressed with the love and care put into everything. I'm so happy to be one of The Besties. Keep it up, and I'll keep throwing the video links at people I know in hopes of finding folk with a few dollars in their couch cushions to toss Caelan's way because they deserve it.

Nothing Jordan does surprises at this point but its still just so many layers of gross and everything I learn adds to that. Great work Caelan, Im sure it was unpleasant to dig in to.

Let me just praise the writing and execution of this video, it's top notch. I laughed many times, but also you nailed it about the behavior and motives of Dr. B, in a clear and very convincing way. Truly great stuff.

i always wonder about public figures with spicy takes that get them in trouble. those people could put their controversial tweets under anonymous profiles. they're just so thirsty for attention that they can't stand it. they'd rather burn their lives down than be nobodies.

I feel as though maybe it's the opposite, like he's always wanted to say this stuff but now feels like he finally has enough fame and followers to get away with it and be taken seriously by some people.

Hi I'm an engineer (well I don't work in the field now but that's what my degree is in and I still "identify as an engineer" lol) and we definitely talked about ethics A LOT during my schooling and our research required us to follow certain ethical guidelines especially when working with live animals. And that's not even getting into the ethical review needed for human research subjects!

This is honestly an AMAZING video essay, I'd say the most important of yours after the GC series. Peterson's exploits as a public figure and as a university professor are pretty widely known, but I've never seen anyone talk about his therapist career. I often see people say 'It's sad to see what happened to Peterson, he used to be such a competent therapist and professor!'. It's really important to show that he was like this from the very start and that he was allowed to gain fame and audience DESPITE being like this. He's always been a person who was capable of all those things, he just didn't have an audience. Also - the same person quoted at the beggining on this video, Peterson's 'mentor' and supporter, says Peterson seriously considered buying a church and starting his own religion, with him and his wife as preachers, so.... yikes...?

"Self educated in the humanities" did they just straight up say he was unqualified and not formally educated in his "expert" field and then... hired him anyway? 😂

Some of Peterson’s “guiding”(sorry, my english is still in progress) were really helpfull in my life. But this vídeo is really good and made me reafirm my mind: “Do not put anyone in a pedestal. Get what is usefull, love, but do not put people like they are perfect.”

I've seen and heard and read so many good (video) essays of why JBP's ideology is bad and dangerous, but never have I ever seen a breakdown of how and why he's a bad therapist. I've loved every minute of this and you look fabulous as always, bestie!

If I were in the same room as him and he kept trying to talk at me, I think I'd just hold my finger to my lips to let him know he should shoosh. It tends to make people angry who are just talking to hear themselves speak. I find that hilarious.

I'm also not going to lie, I bet that Peterson was against the necessary existence of intersectionality and was also against Critical Race Theory (which is necessary to be taught in educational institutions) since he's also a racist in addition to his xenophobia, colonialism, queerphobia and transphobia, ableism, etc. because he doesn't like it when people have freedom to be themselves.

i have nothing of insight to add other than jordan somehow manages the feat of technobabble despite being a literal doctor. So many words with the content of a long fart sound. Years later i still dont understand how anyone has taken this man seriously (literal bold-faced villain moments the way he talks about ethics, good lord) and yet here we are. Another banger Caelan. the puppet was simultaneously a nice touch and also horrifying, 10/10 no notes.
