The Caesar 8x8 is an upgraded version of the 6x6 Caesar wheeled self-propelled howitzer using 155/52 caliber cannon. This artillery is designed and manufactured by the French Defense Company Nexter Systems. This version of the Caesar was unveiled during the defense exhibition in London, DSEI in September 2015. The Caesar 8x8 presented at DSEI was based on the Tatra T-815 8x8 chassis.

In fact, Tatra (which provided chassis for this thing) has a tradition in SPG's. Chceck "SpGH DANA" it's on the same chassis as CAESAR and it has excellent offroad abilities. The SpGH DANA has also an auto-loader which can work in any gun angle, most of SPG's need to have gun in certain angle for auto-loader to work.

with fully automated round handling, they could do a 175mm version. The reasoning behind 175mm is following: modern rounds need guidance units, on per round (at least $20k each) and in 175mm there would be much more bang for the buck (literally). Also the range, old 175mm M107 had range of up to 40km, and modern 155mm M109 has ~20km (no rocket assist). If making rocket assisted 175mm rounds, the addition of onboard propellant, will still remain a reasonable space for explosive itself (unlike 155mm). The lack of full crew enclosure make them open to counter battery fire, so the gun MUST outrange almost anything that can fire back. However this is also an opportunity: theoretically, the ammo handling mechanism can be readjusted to 175mm rounds, while the enclosed turret, allowing handling of such huge rounds would be too big to be practical. So by making a 175mm version of caesar they could drastically increase lethality and firing range, and thus increase safety of the crew. The possible disadvantages would be: lower ammo capacity and weight increase.

@@fcalvaresi You have to realise that ISIS are just terrorists, not a world power. The CAESAR 8x8 against modern technology would take nothing. @VeeranLegacy
@VeeranLegacy 5 жыл бұрын
@@nyph933 both CAESAR have anti-tank rounds that would chew through the Paladin, there is a reason why France didn't bother replacing the AuF1 with another armored artillery platform: it's wasted armor, now mobile artillery is all about mobility, I mean most tanks have to rely on active defense systems because of how advanced munitions are becoming, so why waste steel on an artillery platform when its going to be 40 Kliks behind your line, probably covered by infantry equipped with anti-tank and anti-air launchers. And compared to the Archer the CAESAR is more easily deployable, more mobile and has an actual combat history to speak of.

The CAESAR 6x6 can carry 18 rounds, the NG (8x8 model) carries 30, both have a range of approximatively 40 Kliks with ERFB shells and more than 50 Kliks rocket-assisted ones. It is airlift capable on both C-130 Hercules and A400M Atlas, it has a road speed of 100Km/h and an off-road speed of 50Km/h. While it lacked armor, the NG model while providing more than sufficient upgrades considering we are talking about a mobile artillery platform. On the actual gun, the CAESAR has less elevation 0° to 70° and traverse 30° with a fire rate of 6 rounds per minute (fire rate of the NG is supposed to be higher) The Archer can carry 21 rounds, has a range of 35 Kliks using NATO Bofors/Nexter shells and 60 Kliks using the Bofors Excalibur rounds. It is airlift capable on A400M Atlas only, has a road speed of 70 Km/h. It does have better armor protection. Archer has an elevation of -1° to 85° and a traverse of 360°(?) with a fire rate of 8 to 9 rounds per minute. So, the main difference is in the gun capabilities, which impact an important point of the French Army: mobility. The CAESAR is more mobile, faster and combat-proven while the Archer while undeniably powerful isn't even deployable by air since Sweden has not bought any A400M. The CAESAR also wins in exports with 5 nations operating the 6x6 and Danmark having bought 15 8x8 while Sweden was not capable of completing Norway's order of 24 howitzers in time, making the Swedish Army the only operator of the Archer (meaning we actually have little to no idea how the platform would operate in temperate/hot environment). In the end, the CAESAR has more than enough combat history to prove it is sufficiently powerful to do its job and the fact that France didn't plan on actually using the model ends up with planned numbers of 77 6x6 and 32 8x8 should be indication enough of its capabilities.
@the_hate_inside1085
@the_hate_inside1085 5 жыл бұрын
@@VeeranLegacy Yeah because testing a weapon platform in temperate environment often makes it malfunction? I´d be more worried how the CAESAR performs when it drops below freezing, I´m pretty sure the Swedes has that covered. So you write first about the Archer: "It is airlift capable on A400M Atlas" Then you write: "the Archer while undeniably powerful isn't even deployable by air since Sweden has not bought any A400M." What is your point? You have to actually buy an airplane to air-deploy the Archer artillery? While the CAESAR can fly away on its own two wings?
@VeeranLegacy
@VeeranLegacy 5 жыл бұрын
@@the_hate_inside1085 Don't be silly, trucks can't fly but I do believe it's easier to deploy a platform when you own the only aircraft capable of transporting it. Of course, it's not an obligation but it sure is a lot easier and most probably a lot quicker too. For the temperate part, my bad, I should have said only hot, temperate being the middle ground everyone tolerates. My only point was: no, the CAESAR isn't a "poor man's Archer" which seemed like a stupid assumption considering the combat history of the CAESAR that's all.

But, still, even improved, can't withstand compared to a PZH 2000 in off road capabilities, mobility, rounds per minute, projectiles capacity. Also a PZH 2000 can pass 3 meters trenches, 1 meter vertical obstacles, more than 1.2m fording depth, the crew is well protected inside from any weather condition or firearms, the projectiles compartment is well protected from mines, bombs, etc and is located in the middle and in low position, so means better balance, the canon is in middle position too, means better balance too. No any wheeled howitzer can have any of these capabilities, not even close to PZH 2000 or other tracked howitzers. In a real battle scenario if you compare a Caesar with a Pzh 2000, you can see how better a Pzh 2000 is in any situation, muddy conditions, slippery wet surfaces, high angles, rocks, sand. No comparison. Caesar needs 1 min preparation and 1 min to move, also 1 round per 10 secs. Pzh 2000 can fire 3 rounds in 10 secs and the whole preparation, firing and moving takes 2 mins, means way less time and more effective at the same time. Also Pzh 2000, 60 projectiles capacity. Caesar 8x8, 30 projectiles. Caesar traverse 30 degrees left/right. Pzh 2000 traverse, 360 degrees.
