Caesar III - Wild, Mad, And Too Good - Rants and Campaign Commentary

I played the first half of the Caesar 3 'dangerous' campaign using the Augustus mod, and this commentary details the many dramas that ensued, starting off with just explaining how this wild city builder from a better era has some very avante garde design, leading to unexpected results. It may come across like a criticism, but at this stage I'm not even mad, you do you Caesar 3, I got addicted anyway.

Hey, Julius/Augustus developer here. Just to let you know, the "latest unstable" release of Augustus has a feature that shows what paths will actually be travelled by roaming walkers when placing a building or when you left-click on it. You just need to enable in the "User Interface" options. This allows you to better plan building placement without as much RNG involved (unless you later add intersections obviously, which will change the previous paths - but then you can immediately confirm if there were any changes to the paths by clicking on the buildings. Have fun!

Road blocks are such an improvement within the Impressions games, introduced with Pharaoh or Cleopatra. With them you can completely remove the randomness of walkers.

It was one of my very first games, I have fond memories of this alongside Zeus and Pharaoh. I vaguely remember putting walls at the edge of the map didn't prevent the enemy from spawning there so be careful, tho I might be mistaking. I was only 8-10 when I was playing this and I just wanted to build pretty cities so I usually ended up being razed by the Emperor's army of blue legionaries for being in deficit too long or failing to provide the resources requested haha Btw nice imitation of the soundtrack

This makes me feel better that I struggled so much playing this as a kid. It's a neat game (especially back in 1999) but it's definitely difficult.

I remember getting the demo on a PC gamer disc back in the day. I couldn't figure it out at all, but it was still so absorbing. Love seeing it here! Another city builder in a similar vein (with people who matter on road networks distributing goods and services) was Knights & Merchants. I actually beat the demo for that one! Fond memories.

Generally towers can’t shoot over a wall that is 2 tiles thick. But you can have a one tile wide wall in front of towers and they will still work! Nicely done to figure out the housing block loops, it’s the most common tactic in the game actually :) A block I like to do is one that is 7x14 houses, with a road on the outside of it. It works on desert maps too. Oh, and one more thing. There are 5 songs in this game, you will get to them all as your cities get bigger ;)

All of the classic impression games are really good and hold up well, my personal favourite being emperor. The most polished mechanics and graphics. Really liked the video, made me want to play through some of them again

K&G pumping out all those videos recently has deprived us of prime OffyD content. Also, I've never been a fan of those proximity-based mechanics in city builders. I wonder what a game with mechanics like this one but without the proximity stuff would be like. Probably still kinda janky. Though my first impression watching this game is that it's quite ahead of its time for 1999.

What an odd but neat little city builder. Speaking of city builders, Against the Storm, a fantasy city builder, came out on steam and apparently its well designed according to the reviews. Might want to take a look!

I thought was a roguelike when I browsed past it so didn't look into it, but City builder sounds more like it!

​@@OffyDGG It certainly seems to have roguelite elements! You start a new settlement once your previous one is complete, and you have different bonuses, buildings, and penalties each time. It may or may not jive with you personally but it is a neat little city builder nevertheless! On another note, Songs of Syx looks pretty cool (another city builder). Bit more obtuse than your average game but still recieved well.

Play Emperor: Rise of Middle Kingdom. It is the last of those city builders and has the most quality of life improvments. Also not sure about removing walker system making it better as it is the meat of gameplay. People usually apply tested city layouts or "housing blocks/districts" which pretty much eliminate rng. One such example is building in spiral, leaving walkers only 1 possible route and thus maximizing supply to everything in range along the road.

I wonder - do you plan to play the new release of Pharoah? It was arguably the most successful of the Impressions City Builders, and the re-release seems to be very faithful to the intent of the original with only a few very small changes to the mechanics, in particular the military system.

I was planning to try it some time. I actually looked into the game before release through writing an ad for the game that appeared on kings and generals, and I was a little disappointed that it looked, in my opinion, worse than the original. I will try it anyway, but based on what I saw/heard, the same kinds of economy-related gameplay problems in Caesar III are present even in this remake.

@@OffyDGG Majesty Fantasy kingdom sim most likely. It is hands-off type of game where you build, cast spells/use buildings special abilities and put bounties while your Heroes have their own AI along other stats and you have to lead them towards your objectives. It's a classic.
