There is no failure, there are only learning opportunities. Keep the ones you are least happy with and 5-6 months from now, pull them out and compare to what you are doing in the future. Your progress will be an affirmation of your growth and how much you have improved. Who knows, Mackintosh's incompletes and Picasso's napkins are very valuable now!! Never agree with defeat, Eric!!

I love how you emphasize not to overwork the portrait. I have a tendency to do that, and I'll now be on my third attempt on doing another one. Thanks.

The hardest thing for me is softening. I watch and watch again but cannot replicate your technique. I assume you have a separate damp brush for this purpose. Your videos are speeded up so it seems to me that your paper stays damp a long time. Thanks again for your marvellous, personal, friendly videos! 😊

I just love this demonstration. I only really use watercolour and so many of the portrait demos are using oils and acrylics where they can go over any colour. You can't do that with watercolour so this was great. Thank you!

I used to paint the skin overall first and later adding in the value & also darker area later which makes my portrait end up flat or 2d...now I understand how painting portrait actually works & with your clear explanation, this really helps a lot...THANK YOU...new subscriber here 😁

One of your best Erin!! I love watching your portraits, and I feel I've learned the process. The drawing part is very important, I agree. I'd be very curious to see what YOU call a failed painting. :)

Hi Mr Eric, for the lightest part on face, did you left it without any color? Is it 100% white from paper? What will happens in few year, did that parts turn yellow? Thank you for response.
@Cafewatercolor
@Cafewatercolor 4 жыл бұрын
some parts I do leave white. I have paintings for several years and they still look fine. Just store them well in dark and dry area. And if you use good quality acid-free paper you should be fine. I am not an expert on paper though, so I can't answer your question completely.

Very lovely portraiture. Can you suggest a good book where I can learn how to draw the head for portrait painting? I have seen pictures where they first draw some oval lines and draw some lines across. I want to learn that perspective method.

ill be perfectly honest, that isnt the same girl in my eyes. i think its the eyes, and the small bulb making the tip of the nose. mainly the eyes though. i'm not any kind of painer, so if anyone want to lob accusations of me not being able to do any better go ahead, but purely as a beholder i'm not sure im seing it. hope it's not way too harsh.

I can see that. I wasn’t really focusing on the likeness. I was focusing on the structure of the face. Likeness is not really my strength, something I still need to work on :)
