I would love this same type of video for breastfeeding! What can/can’t you consume, when/how much can you have it, etc… caffeine, alcohol, certain foods, what vitamins do you really need, etc!

i really really appreciated this EVIDENCE BASED video, digging into the why we are told what we are told by our provider. Its so much more complicated than "you can have 1 cup a day"

Fellow Starbucks lover and L&D nurse here and recently had to cut back and switch to tea instead. So this will probably also make me sound like a caffeine freak, but I did work at Starbucks in the past. So here is a Starbucks hack: a hot grande and venti espresso drinks actually both have 2 shots of espresso, so you are essentially just paying for more milk but the same amount of caffeine. Now you can tailor that to your taste because a grande will taste stronger than a venti, which will be more diluted. However, an iced venti has 4 more ounces than a hot venti and 3 shots of espresso, so you automatically get an extra shot with an iced venti. So if you are wanting more caffeine, it’s better to either add an extra shot in a hot drink, get an iced venti, or order an americano, which each size automatically comes with 1 more shot than the same size espresso drink. Now a brewed coffee or tea, hot or iced, will have more caffeine as you increase sizes because they add more of the actual caffeinated beverage. 😳 I may have a caffeine problem! Anyway.. love your channel and all you do to educate and support parents and nurses to help facilitate a more bonded relationship and create a better birthing experience! You are truly an inspiration!

Thank you for doing this video Sarah! I'm reading the book "Nourishing Traditions of Baby and Child Care" and the topic of caffeine during pregnancy says on page 32... Caffeine gives you a lift by stimulating the secretion of adrenaline, and then the adrenal cortex needs to work very hard to produce the corticoid hormones that bring the body back to homeostasis. The result over time is nutrient depletion and adrenal exhaustion. An interesting theory holds that a woman with depleted adrenal function can "steal" adrenal hormones from her developing fetus, condemning the baby to compromised adrenal function from the moment of birth. The corticoid hormones produced by adrenal glands regulate almost every aspect of our metabolism including blood sugar levels, blood pressure, mineral metabolism, healing and stress responses. They are involved in the production of sex hormones......This is a big struggle for me because I love my caffeine. When I was pregnant with my daughter I tried to stay under 200 mg per day. I'm pretty addicted to green tea which is helpful that it has far less caffeine than coffee. My belief based on the evidence is that since caffeine has the potential to affect nutrient absorption, its extra important for pregnant mommas to consume a lot of nutrient dense foods.

Such a thorough breakdown! I'm always so happy when someone explains more background information about studies. I think my body or even whatever higher power there might be knew that I probably would have a difficult time limiting my caffeine consumption because both my pregnancies caused me to physically not be able to consume coffee or very much coffee. My first made it so I really could only stand maybe one or two cups and it had to be mixed with dairy or flavoring. My second pregnancy is twins and even the smell during the first and some of the 2nd trimesters made me disgusted. In the 3rd trimester I can stand 1 cup of coffee regular. Outside of pregnancy I drink 4 or more cups of regular coffee 🙂

I'm Italian, and boooyyy, is coffee part of my culture! I'm 26, and mum still reminds me she cut off completely coffee when she was pregnant with me! She says it's the biggest act of love she can think of 😂😂😂 I think I'm not gonna tell her that now I can tell pregnant people a cup a day is fine 😁

Coffee made me so sick in my first trimester. Now I’ll have the occasional cup of regular coffee, but I mostly just drink decaf. Some decaf with a pump of pumpkin flavor and cream from Dunkin…yumm.

During my first pregnancy when I found cutting coffee the hardest (because my consumption was way high - hello from Sweden) I started cutting by not only restricting the amount of cups but mainly diluting my coffee more and more with more and more milk. So at the end I was basically drinking it like an ice latte but with filter coffee instead of the same amount as I would have with espresso. From drinking cups and cups of filter coffee with only a small amount of milk. So I started using the coffee as flavoring to milk. It worked well for me :)

I like Cuban espresso dripped. That’s my favorite. 1.5 tablespoons of grounds for 4 cups. It’s so delicious and cost efficient. Lol I finally had Starbucks for the first time. I like dark roast but I don’t like it burnt tasting. Fresh ground is necessary (not stale) I can’t stand stale grounds. I leave mine in the freezer in an air right container. Medium roast is my favorite. Btw different roasts have different caffeine amounts! Check it out

You crack me up! And yes, it was super interesting. I'm a tea drinker not coffee and during my fertility journey I cut down to one (with an extra one or two decaf teas) a day. I also drink Pepsi, which honestly, is a bigger concern for the sugar than the caffein. I would love one of these for sugar consumption in pregnancy. I know, obviously, less is better, but what is the actual science. I should look it up. P.S. I didn't know you're half Canadian, that's awesome, hello from Canada. :-)

Decaf is not always a good option to choose. The manufacturing process uses very bad chemicals to remove the caffeine from the grains. You need to research which brands use Swiss water processing which is safe. Unfortunately, Starbucks decaf coffee is made with chemicals :(

Soda is my kryptonite, I drink it every day and my son was born completely healthy at 7lb 12oz, currently 36 weeks pregnant with my daughter and she's in the 57th percentile so far. I found that especially early on, caffeine was the only thing that would help with headaches. I do limit to under 200mg/day and I've recently discovered that my favorite Starbucks drinks taste just as good decaf :) My only worry is I never know 100% that the barista actually made it decaf so that does worry me but I don't drink coffee every day so, you know, flex and flow 😉

A whole 2 liter of Coke has about 200mg. I had ridiculous Coke cravings. Probably not smart to to consume that much sugar, but knowing it was in my caffeine limits brought me some comfort.

No question is silly but it may feel silly... I have Lavazza a modo MIO and while pregnant I had one capsule in a big jug filled with ice and oat milk or cow milk every day. Generally the capsules range from 40-75mg. Does the amount of milk or liquid increase the caffeine content? Or it remains 40-75?

I almost stopped consuming caffeine just to be sure. I had like 2 or 3 small caffeinated drinks and I am 22 weeks now. Decaf coffee is okay for me buuut I really do crave a nice cold coke. I occasionally have one to two sips when my partner orders a coke xD
