Listen: • Cage The Elephant - Co...
Alternative rock outfit Cage the Elephant completely surprises me with a record of songs that have uniformly interesting production, energetic performances, memorable hooks, sharp melodies, and a pretty diverse array of instrumentation. Bravo!
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

I like the first CTE release. The lyrics are immature, but they're honest. I think the garage rock almost punk stylings made them interesting in this world of pretentious whining. Sometimes I just want to listen to some kids who don't have their heads up their asses.

+AuspexAO TBH it's frustrating how such a massive portion of what he considers important in his reviews are the social commentary of the lyrics. The amount of information and that can be inserted in a 4 minute song, or even an hour long album, is so small, and they're not bringing ANY new perspective to any serious societal issues. So basically, yes, sometimes, we just want to hear some good music.

It’s Just a Forever Is a fucking masterpiece. It doesn’t only feature Alison Mosshart (which is in The Kills and The Dead Weather) but the structure is chaotic and completely different from anything I’ve ever heard. It has a very catchy hook while also staying interesting and musically challenging. At the end, it has a run down piano melody which makes it sound even more interesting. I love this album. I’m glad it got an 8 m8

haven't been any psych, sludge, drone albums that have caught my ear enough to review 'em. sorry. i'm not trying to endlessly follow one, two, or three singles genres until the day i die. i'm just going where my ears take me. if i dig a sound, i follow it. some sounds grow dull for me, some sounds grow interesting. that's it.

This is an all time favorite of mine. Their first two albums are good and I fucked with them HEAVILY in middle school, but god damn they snapped on this one. A personal 10 for me. There are zero weak tracks. I think that there is a fair argument for any track on this album being the best. Though they have their highlights, wish Tell Me I’m Pretty and Social Cues were better. Melophobia comparatively just feels raw and authentic.

I have to disagree with you on their previous 2 albums. Yes, each album they've released has been schizophrenic and all over the place, but there were some great songs to come out from both of them, such as Aberdeen, Drones in the Valley and of course, Shake Me Down. However, I am loving this new LP, I think it's a refreshing listen, much more enjoyable than many other rock albums that have just been released. 8/10 for me. Great review as well, Anthony! Keep up the good work!

Well, at least The Hives and The Vines had a really defined sound that when you listen to them, you know it's them. With Cage The Elephant, they didn't really have that until this album and even this album is a little unfocused. You're ignorant if you don't admit that Cage The Elephant, on their first 2 albums, jumped from style to style to style. Just listen to "Indy Kidz" and "Shake Me Down" back-to-back and try and tell me that isn't unfocused.
@GeorgeUnitt
@GeorgeUnitt 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Proulx I don't really see why you need a "distinctive style". The Hives' two most successful songs are pretty much the same track released twice. It's not a law to have an album which all sounds the same, it's totally legal to just play whatever you fancy.
@JoeProulx
@JoeProulx 9 жыл бұрын
George Unitt I understand that, but there has to be a common thread linking the tracks together for it to be an album to sound cohesive. And this Cage The Elephant record is the bands best job of doing that (mostly because of the production being consistent and also the song writing). I love it when bands take other genres and sounds and put it into their music, but only if it's done tastefully and isn't just ripping off another bands style.

Black Widow is Blue Orchid by the White Stripes. It's the same song...I really do like this LP, but I feel there are times where it gets too carried away with its influences, and my goodness, I don't know if it was on this album or one of their previous albums, but another track I could swear with the chorus I was listening to The Beatles' I wanna hold your hand. If they continue to come out with the sound I like so much that I see as their own, I could easily be able to enjoy Cage the Elephant even more than I do now.

I was pleasantly surprised with this album as well, I was so sick of hearing "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked" and thought they would never go beyond that level in they're music but they did good here.

I like you. I can definitely see where you come from on all your opinions, you're pretty much like me if I wasn't so afraid to criticize. I have to say something, though: on a channel dedicated to music, I recommend that you add a little background music, preferably from the album's and songs you're discussing. Add that detail, and I'd be hooked.

The thing I like best about Cage the Elephant is their ability to change. I think they take their various influences and put their own little twist to it. I see it more as a nod to the artists that they look up to. Great review though.

Their first album is one of my favorite albums period, but I don't really like anything after that. It's not that they're bad, but it's just not my thing. I feel like it lacks their energy from their self-titled, which is what I loved about them.

The CTE fans on this video are making me cringe. So what if he didn't like the first two albums? He gave this one a good rating, and he has justification as to why he didn't like the first two albums. You guys are giving the band sort of a bad connotation because of how big of babies you all are. I like cage the elephant, but his opinions should be respected. After all, they're pretty accurate.

Personally I think there is a clear motive in every Cage the Elephant album. The first album : Cage the Elephant this album's main theme is the horrid things people do. For example In One ear covers teenage angst. A song with even stronger connections to the main theme is Aint No Rest for the Wicked this song covers subjects like mugging prostitutes and even robbing all for money. The second album : Thank you happy birthday mainly covers mainstream media censoring , and also depression. A good example of this is in Japanese Buffalo, and Indy kids. First Japanese Buffalo this song covers self harm, and why people do it. Finally lets cover Indy kids, Indy kids has strong connections to the human desire to be the same as everyone else because they believe that its the only way to be accepted by society. The third alum Melophobia similar to the last album cover things like self harm. But it seems to be really about mental illness as a whole. A song that represents this perfectly is Telescope. Telescope is about a man who feel like the world wont ever accept him. This song clearly has a strong ties to depression. Finally the most recent album (not counting unpeeled) Tell me i'm Pretty. This album has a more meek motive then any of the other albums by Cage the Elephant. The main theme of this album is Love and how it can affect you in a negative way. A good example of this is in Sweaty Little Jean this song covers how death of a loved one can be hard and the fallout that it brings. But this is all my opinion.

You obviously don't understand them or their lyrics if you call them cheesy. They gave me such a fresh and new perspective on what good music really is. Although I do agree this album is not their best, their past two albums are amazing. I feel they made this one a little more main stream and better looking for pop culture. I think they lost their original hard alternative rock. There's not that grunge that I loved in the past two. But if u still believe that they have cheesy lyrics, I think they wrote "in one ear" just for you. So really listen to those words and tell me what you think.

MAN YOU MUST BE TROLLING THE FUCK OUT OF ME. "Modern bands like the hives, the vines, the white stripes, and the pixies" have all been dormant for about 10 years. So there's what you're missing out on. Cage the Elephant is the band carrying the torch. You say that after hearing the first two albums you are confused by what their sound is so I mean I guess your two fallacies in understanding go hand in hand. As for the first two albums, I couldn't disagree more with everything you said. The band's direction is pretty much as straight forward as it could be possibly be? The albums are filler-free, and every song brings something good to the table. Melophobia is the furthest album so far from garage rock....I mean honestly I pretty much disagree with every single sentence you said and I'm not going to continue writing this comment. I'm really interested in what you listen to that leads you to make such idiotic statements...possibly nothing but hip hop? If thats the case I can excuse you there but I would reevaluate my view on the entire entertainment industry before I came out guns blazing with such an ill thought out message.

OMG SOMEONE HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION THAN ME, TIME TO FREAK OUT Dude, get over the fact that not everyone is the same as you, okay? I watch almost all of this guys reviews and I agree with him sometimes and I disagree with him sometimes. But I don't get all pissed off over it. And fyi, he listens to a huge amount of music from nearly every genre. Check out a couple of his reviews, he's got over 1000 of them. Or be ignorant and continue to hate people for being human, it's your choice really.

There have been some really impressive releases in 2013, this being one. I'd review: 'The Blackest Beautiful' - .Letlive or 'Lift Your Existence' - Night Verses (please do this one if you have time, it's pretty damn good - and also check their little 5 track EP too) I'm really surprised Night Verses Album hasn't got more publicity. The album is incredible, the songs ooze a wistfulness and intense passion. On a side note: Melophobia solid 8/10 verging on 9. I agree with the majority of what you've said, because I definitely agree that Cage did originally almost fall into that 'similar-to-the-masses' strand of Alt-rock bands. I began listening to them before I'd heard any other vaguely similar variant band, so I've got a fondness for them having followed them and seen them evolve, but I do admit I may have ended up following another alt-rock variant if I had heard that variant first; that's the way it is sometimes. Generally I work on the premise 'Do my ears like the sound?'/ 'Does it sound good to me?' and I think 'Thank you happy birthday' and 'Melophobia' have branched off into this obscure new-rock sound the really do appeal to my ear-holes. They take from many influences and lay down their own creative soul into one musical smash which I really do enjoy; I'm sure i'm a little biased. Like you're reviews boss, keep at it, and do check out the Night Verses album! Hope you read this :), My regards,
