Kaytee dominates the market on small mammal cages in the US. Today's cage is being reviewed as an appropriate enclosure, so what's good about it? Is this cage good as a main cage for housing your hamster or mouse or is there something even better? Today you'll learn about the quality and functionality of this type of cage.

The problem is,pet stores will keep providing misinformation. Why is someone who is misinformed going to spend more money on a larger cage when petco/petsmart/pets at home will tell them "the tiny cages we developed for our own line will suit your small animal just fine"? They'll remember the hamster they has a kid- the cage was likely pretty small- and why would they question a pet store employees advice? They should know what they're talking about after all. I think as a whole, there should be just as much effort spent dispelling the neglectful-and in some cases, downright dangerous- advice. No company is going to spend too much time making and selling larger cages when the general public end up buying the cheapest (and smallest) cages.
@MrJkfixe
@MrJkfixe 4 жыл бұрын
unfortunatelly, no. they wouldn't make that much money. On the contrary, they would loose money If the regular hamster standard was the big aquariums and cages, the big majority of people would never get one. People get hamsters because they are small, they can be friendly and only need a small cage that is easy to perform maintenance. And those people are the ones that give money to pet companies. People who understand the pet's necessities usually buy things cheaper in other places other than pet stores - like bin cages, or regular halogen lamps from the electricity store for reptiles. I could bet that not even 1% of hamster owners are aware of good hamster husbandry, that's why we are not the target for companies that make pet stuff. They are focused on the 99% that got to the store and impulse buy or just blindly follow the store advice, because those naive people are the ones that give them money

This could be a great nursery cage for new rat moms because the babies wouldn't be able to get stuck in the bars because of the tray, but there's still better ventilation than trying to use a bin cage (unless you're meshing out all the sides).

I actually used this as a retirement cage for my oldest rat. He absolutely adored it! He started losing control of his hindlegs so he couldn't climb up the bars or ramps of his bigger cage anymore. He needed a cage that was longer rather than taller and this was absolutely perfect for him. He was also a pretty big rat, and he still fit comfortably in the cage. My rats were never big chewers, so I can't comment on the plastic or how hardy it is, but overall I highly recommend it.

I don’t get the complaints about bin cages being too cloudy. Critter trails are so dense and I feel like you can’t see anything, and I hate the tacky colors they use. It’s like a child threw up on it. Bin cages, although they are cheap, have more visibility in my opinion, and doing simple things like customizing the lid and theming the inside makes it way cooler than any ugly brightly colored cage. I mean when I look at my hamster, I’d rather see him slightly cloudy rather then blue or pink because of the plastic..

I bought the Sterilite 200 quart bin/50 gallon at Home Depot along with a roll of steel mesh and two bags of zip ties. I used a old soldering iron to punch in the holes for the zip ties, and a box cutter whose blade was dipped into a pot of boiling water to heat the blade for easier scribing and cutting the large hole in the lid for proper air ventilation... Without any doubt whatsoever, as far as proper animal husbandry is concerned with hamsters, this giant bin is the best value overall... Over 600 square inches... Even thrifty Munchie uses this giant bin...

I researched the laws, and unfortunately the minimum enclosure *by law* for hamsters is abysmal. According to the USDA Animal Welfare Act (Part 3, Subpart B, section 3.28, as of May 2019) the minimum *height* of an enclosure is six inches, but the minimum floor space for the biggest hamster is 15 square inches with a maximum of 13 hamsters per enclosure. Yikes. Both the ASPCA and the US Humane Society recommend a minimum of a 10 gallon tank. The California Hamster Association recommends a minimum of 450 square inches, which is the only official source I can find for that number. The US is sadly not very good at hamsters.
@Carolinagirl1028
@Carolinagirl1028 4 жыл бұрын
WhiteVioletButterfly Yes, I noticed the same a couple years ago which is why it is hard to get some on board as 450 square inches is not actually an official minimum but rather a minimum set mostly by various forums that focus on hamster care and as you mentioned the California hamster association. Those ones obviously know what they are talking about and I fully agree with them and if anything think it should be even higher but to those who question it seeing the ‘official’ minimum and recommendations you mentioned above often makes them feel satisfied that their care is just fine and that those who push for 450 square inches are incorrect to do so. Animal care in the US is abysmal in regards to many animals but their hamster care in particular is some of the worst and greatly needs updating!
@nicolebakirtjy5613
@nicolebakirtjy5613 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I think a lot of the US animal rights laws are designed with laboratories in mind. The standards for various rodents are appalling and make me want to vomit. We can do so much better, but it's hard to get politicians to care about what they see as "throw away pets" which is so frustrating.

I love my 528 but I also love my 50 gal. bin cage. I have mice in both cages and each one allows me to give them vertical as well as horizontal enrichment. I have suspension bridges in both cages. I just drill two little holes, on opposite sides of the bin cage, and hang the suspension bridge from planter chain. One end of the chain goes in the bridge hook and the other goes out through the little hole. You can hot glue a washer on the inside of the hole if you have a plastic chewer in your group. The end link, of the chain is secured with a small ring or anything else that keeps the chain from falling back into the cage when the bridge is jostled. I use the: 4Pack - 24 Inch 4 Leads Hanging Chain with Hooks Flower Pot Chain Replacement Plant Hangers for Bird Feeders, Planters and Lanterns (Black) as I hang a lot of things using the chains. It is easy to bend the links to open and close them so that you can use whatever length you need. You could also use sisal twine but some rodents will chew the twine which is why I use chain to hang things.

I’m so glad to see companies actually trying to make there products better! I recently bought the ferplast criceti 100, the cage is great! However the accessories are hideous. Everything including the platforms went right to the trash. Our 11 inch wheel does fit perfectly. And she has 7 inches of bedding to dig in. Our russian dwarf hamster does seen to enjoy it a lot. The cage is as big as the cage where my parents use to have there bunny in! I feel so bad, I’m glad I can do better. I don’t blame my parents because pet shops are awful. But video’s like this are giving me some hope that enclosures will go bigger eventually

My local Petco in the US has these in stock. I made the mistake of not doing enough research and ended up getting this for my new hammy. It's not bad, but really overpriced. Long story short I'm giving her plenty of enrichment until I can upgrade to a bin cage or similar. I'm glad to see pet stores sell something that's somewhat adequate! With the proper amount of bedding (which can actually fit in this cage) and taking out the plastic ramp, it's miles better than any other of the Crittertrails.

I watched Pickle's pets review in 2018 and ended up getting this cage. Now, I've had several. The only thing I didn't like about them is the door is hard to open and ultimately, one of the plastic tabs would break off. Others have said that reaching in from the top of a cage (rather than have a side door) means your small animal may think you're a predator. That said, I love the transparent deep tub and the 1/4" wire spacing. p.s. None of my gerbils ever chewed the plastic on these cages.

Funny story about gerbils and chewing through plastic crittertrails... I used to work at PetSmart and a lady came in wanting to buy her son 2 gerbils and put them on the small standard crittertrail that everyone has seen before. I told her they need to go in an aquarium because they will chew out of the plastic enclosures and escape. She said she understood, but wanted the plastic cage anyways. At PetSmart, employees actually have the right to deny an animal sale if we suspect they won’t be cared for properly, so I told her I wasn’t going to sell her the gerbils. Of course this upset her and my pet sales manager sided with me, as she had gerbils herself. The customer yelled at me, called me many colorful names, and said “if it isn’t an appropriate cage, why would they put a gerbil on the box? They would be sued if they lied like that!” I said “because they want to sell you the cage.” And walked away lol afterwards a new manager we just hired went behind our backs and sold her the gerbils anyways, and lectured me saying I shouldn’t talk to customers that way and literally never forgave me/ or let me forget about it. Yeah sorry I did the right thing, and sorry to the customer when she finds out there are gerbils running free in her house 🤷🏻‍♀️

Question: Is the ideal floor space before or after the addition of...stuff (so like bowls, toys, hides, wheel, etc)? In other words, do i have to add up the total footprint size of what I plan to add and then subtract that from the total size of the enclosure floor space? I hope that makes sense...

It's been a year so I'm sure you've found an answer, but if not: The floor space is the space before adding in any toys/hides/wheel etc, however you just have to make sure you don't overcrowd the space and that your hamster can still move around without having to squeeze through everywhere. Hope that helps!

Ur overthinking, the length and the width multiply those and u get ur floor space, height does not count, adding another cage does not count

Cheaper to get smaller cages and join them together, the main thing to concerntrate on having is a 12 inch wheel, 4 inches of burrowing substrate, toilet area, scatter feeding and puzzles that have food in so they have to work for their food. Time outside their cage is probably the most important aspect. I think people are too caught up in having massive enclosures for hamsters. From the studies I have seen cage size was not the main factor in stopping stereotyped behaviour and a proper burrowing system helped with deep substrate and tunnels. I haven't had great success with large singular cages for hamsters but have had great success with large cages for gerbils. The main difference being intelegence. I can toilet train a gerbil and leave burrows 12 inches deep intact for 6 months. When I tried this with a hamster, the hamster used the toilet area for a bit but then started going to the toilet in their nest so I obviously had to clean it. I had better success with hamsters with 300sqfs main cage with levels and tubes and other compartments. I found the hamster would stash food in the tubes, always wee and poo in the same place. Connecting multiple cages I feel is better. I found that in the larger cage I was destroying burrows and the next time they would then change their nest and it seemed more stressful.
