I just started learning about Asian Water Monitors a few days ago. I thought of something that is really cool about them, and it is this. They're the only pet you don't have to potty train. They do their business in a water receptacle just like people do... Now that about you've got to train people to use a toilet. So they're an amazing lizard that I would like to own one day. Hey Kevin what size is the enclosure?

How much do one of your regular baby water monitors cost? Also, would it even be possible to come to NERD from Canada and get one? I'm not thinking about right now but in a few years, it isn't a long drive at all from where I am.

What I plan on doing is I have a reptile/fish room and they're all on shelves so could I just keep her roaming on the room of that floor with a large area of water and a place with heat lamps and dirt? I plan on putting dog beds and stuff. And of course I in small groups let all of them out of the room to run about

UVB isn't essential to these guys as adults. Unlike say a bearded dragon, they are fine without it as adults.

@@123animalcrazy The science isn't sure on that yet. You should have UVB just in case.
@austinrousee6729

Kur Norock I mean NERD has been the gold standard for water monitors. Not only were they one of the first to produce captive bread animals to the US market, but one of the first to start producing T- and T+. And it it is not just NERD, but jay at prehistoric pets and Brian at snakebites all agree that they have never seen anything suggesting that adult monitors need uvb. Personally I’ll take the word of some of the most successful water monitor keepers with 20 plus years of experience in keeping and breeding vs yours which is clearly an assumption.
@KurNorock
@KurNorock 4 жыл бұрын
@@austinrousee6729 I didn't make an assumption. I stated a fact. The SCIENCE concerning the UVB needs of monitors is still up in the air. I never said that NERD or Jay or Brian are wrong. I am just saying that the SCIENCE is not there yet. And 99% of the time I will trust the SCIENCE over a handful of people with a lot of experience. Because believe it or not, people with lots of experience can be wrong. Again, I am not saying they are, I am just saying that until the science comes in, we don't know. Yes, they might have raised hundreds of monitors that lead long lives, but that doesn't mean they were 100% healthy without UVB.
@austinrousee6729
@austinrousee6729 4 жыл бұрын
Kur Norock look up the actual science that proves snakes do not require uvb. No actually study done by an accredited university has ever shown scientific proof showing that they do not require uvb, not one. Keepers have simply used trial and error over the 40+ years to come to that safe conclusion. It is the same exact thing that is happening with water monitors. That’s the reason almost no professional keepers use UVB on larger monitors anymore. It’s clearly not necessary which is shown from the success of all the top breeders who all have the same conclusion. It is very simple to prove an animal requires uvb, however extremely difficult to prove it does not. Which is exactly why I brought up the sankes, that is not scientifically proven and likely never will be. So if you own a snake and don’t give it uvb one can make the same argument. Because the scientific evidence will likely never be produced

I was doing some research on water monitors (normal/wild-type), and some people sell them for as low as $130, while yours are $500+ more than that. I'm not saying yours are over priced, if anything I would rather buy from you than other "breeders" because they aren't clear on if theirs are captive bred or imported, but I was just wondering if there was a reason for it? I know yours are also socialized, and I don't know if others are as well. I'm just curious, since I'll definitely be adding one to my family once I'm out of college and settled down somewhere.
@lilspookipi
@lilspookipi 8 жыл бұрын
Rich Weston No, the albinos are thousands of dollars . NERD's Normal/Wild-type monitors are $850. That includes shipping, so let's just say they're $800. I found some that were $130. That's a huge leap. I would understand smaller jumps in price, being that different businesses run in different ways, some people get them imported, different costs and such, and the fact that they socialize them. I'm just extremely confused and baffled, basically.

Dose the 130$ have videos of them petting and being pretty tame? I could see 130$ be some wild one that people live by so when someone orders one they go catch it and then say its tame and sell em for cheap
@markmiller2939
@markmiller2939 7 жыл бұрын
The ones he sells are all captive bred. the animals going for $100-150 are wild caught animals. It takes a lot of time and effort (not to mention tons of space) to produce captive bred which is why they are so much more expensive.

infamousNB UVB doesnt travel through windows. Those basking lights may have UVB though depending on what hes using. People will tell you different things, but in my opinion they dont NEED UVB aslong as you supplement their food. I didnt use UVB for nearly 2 years and saw no negative effects or any signs of MBD. I do use it now and havent noticed any differences in behavior or health, but i figure its better to be safe than sorry. I know for a fact its nowhere near as important to monitors as it is to other lizards like bearded dragons though. A beardy would be in extremely poor condition, if not dead, after 2 years without UVB. My Nile monitor went from 6inches all the way to 6ft before I even started using UVB. If UVB was 100% necessary hed have lost a tremendous ammount of bone density after a growth spurt like that, but hes solid as a rock.

Nope you wont die. The main thing with monitor bites is the infection. If you dont let it get infected and you keep the wound nice and clean you wont have any troubles other then stitches and if it bite your hand, nerve damage might be a thing too. Thats why it is super important to read the animals behavior

I love the way they just lays flat on their bellies and all sprawled out like bullfrogs. The way they hold their legs behind them is so cute. I think I need therapy Kevin. I was watching another video of a water monitor and before I could even close my eyes the man had to show us the...oh the word gives me anxiety....the "hemipenis"! 😳🥴🤢 It just came flying out of nowhere and burned my eye hairs🥺. I will never be able to unsee that. So my question to you is is this, is this something that just happens all the time? or was he hanging around a perverted over stimulated water monitor or what? I hope it's only necessary for breeding and that it's just not a hobby for water monitors to shock human beings and then share all their exploits with their buddies about it at the👽 " Happy Monitor Lounge!"🐊 (They don't have monitor emojis...you need to do something about that as well ) Ok I'm off to my PTHPD...(figure this out...it's really easy...like Sunday morning...it's all good... it's medicinal😉😉)
