It other clips of this movie , the " give my regards to Broadway clip i think we see more the James Cagney choreography rather that George Cohen . The jumping up on the crate at the edge of the dock. Mary tells George that Sam is producing a show by Kaufman and (Moss) Hart. They wrote the book for "I'd Rather Be Right" but musicals are usually credited to the composer and lyricist, who were Rogers and (Lorenz) Hart. They are never mentioned in the film. The show was produced in 1937 but Lorenz Hart even updated the lyrics for "I'd Rather Be Right" for a the film released during wartime. Rogers and Hart also wrote the music for "The Phantom President" (1932), Cohan's only film musical but apparently Cohan carried a grudge. The movie does show Cohan dancing and it's clear Cagney absolutely nailed Cohan's dancing style.

Astaire would've been a bad choice. Cohan was not an elegant, graceful dancer like Astaire. Nor was he as good a singer. Besides, only Cagney radiated the sort of human dynamo that the real Cohan must've been. Imaging a guy that writes plays and songs, acts and dances in them and runs a chain of theaters. He also 'Cohanized' plays for other playwrights and acted in plays written by others. A real theatrical genius.

@@philiphalpenny9761 Cagney might've been good as Doolittle. Doolittle was merely a British version of the big city, rascally, streetsmart character that Cagney frequently played. If Cagney was capable of doing a Cockney accent, he'd have been great. He also might've been a threat to run off with the movie, being such a scene stealer. Another movie Cagney might've been good at was 1975s "The Sunshine Boys" starring George Burns and Walter Matthau. It was about two elderly ex vaudevillians. Cagney really was an ex vaudevillian like Burns. Cagney could've done the Matthau part.

Cohan was a bit worried how the President would react to this show. It was well reviewed in the papers and Roosevelt read them. In truth the show served FDR well. The impression by Cohan was light hearted and entertaining. It also covered up a political liability for FDR. Cohan prancing around and singing was something Roosevelt couldn’t do. FDR was a cripple and very few knew about it, the general public never did until years after his passing. At the time those in the news trade that did know respected him or were scared to death of the power of the White House. (Big difference from modern times, right?). How much of the Cagney movie when Cohan was awarded the CMOH is probably a bit more fiction. All that being said, this movie played great homage to Cohan, Cagney and the real FDR.
