Please respect the inside history of the station. She is a beautiful majestic station and should only be touched up. Too many of these treasures get ruined when developers and designers do not pay attention to the details that make the station beautiful.

Respecting the history of a building is laudable, but at the same time, there are many stations in this country that could use a face lift and more space for added capacity. I like to use St. Pancras International in London as a guide. They've done a wonderful job preserving the history of that station while modernizing it. I went to a few of the meetings, none of the historic assets in the main station building will be touched. That said, they propose for the trainyard and passenger subway underneath to have a complete renovation, starting at the old passenger gates (which are already essentially gone, there is really only one left as a reminder).

If LA Union Station is being reconfigured to be a run-through station to create a better flow for trains, then the same logic should be applied for the Transbay Transit Center in SF which is currently configured as a stub-end station. It doesn't need to necessarily be right away, but in order to meet the expected demand of both Caltrain and CAHSR trains a return loop needs to be completed within a few years of Transbay opening for train traffic so trains can enter and leave the station in the same direction thus allowing more trains to enter the station at a time since the flow will always be in the same direction. Especially since Transbay as built will have half the number of tracks and platforms as the current 4th and King Caltrain station.

Excellent. I have been looking forward to seeing this on here. Most people, it seems, are unaware of how many projects directly related and largely paid for by CA HSR are happening in Southern California. They think of HSR as only being in the San Joaquin Valley. But many major improvement projects, like grade crossing projects that are underway in SoCal as well as LA Union Station, are happening in large part in preparation for HSR. It would be beneficial to educate the public much more about the relationship between CA HSR and these projects.

As somebody who goes to school in North Hollywood, and eventually work either in West Hollywood or somewhere else in Southern California, a more efficient and faster rail service would honestly be the best. @peterbelanger4094
@peterbelanger4094 3 жыл бұрын
The western United States is an extremely challenging terrain for any kind of rail construction, and even more so for high speed. A little tougher than the rolling hills (or even the Alps) of Europe, or the flood plains of China. Expensive is an understatement. Lots and lots of rock will have to be cut. Many tunnels and bridges will be needed. Routes will be much more curvy, meaning lower speeds and longer distances. And how is train travel going to become popular enough to fund all that? Here, in the US??? Yeah, good luck. Trains are just not a thing here, that's not going to change for generations, if at all.

@@romanrat5613 "here is no reason we don't have HSR service between cities that would take 1-4 hours. " Nah bro because a 4 hour train ride is still a 1 hour airplane. CAHSR if it were ever completed would take 4 hours, but the plane is 1 hour. So it's stupid. It will get Those Who Would Otherwise Drive (which is nobody, traffic on I-5, 101 and 99 is practically zero because there's nobody driving all the way from SF to LA) and tourists. Just like in Europe. Tourists take HSR, locals fly. Especially if the train is like 3 or 4 hours and the plane is 1 hour. Show me anywhere in the free world where a 4 hour train took away from demand for a 1 hour plane ride! 80% of ground transportation in Europe is still done with CARS. (Just like 80% of traffic in the NEC is cars btw. Amtrak is less than 20%.) "Obviously it would not be feasible to connect every city on the east coast to the west coast, but plenty of regions of the US have similar density to Europe. " They're too far apart, is the problem. We have plenty of trains in the Bay Area. There are plenty of trains in LA/SD ("LOSSAN"). Problem is they are 380 miles apart. Similar issue with Chicago to NEC. Lots of trains in the NEC, lots of trains in Chicago area, but the two regions are 800 miles apart. "Also, planes cause a lot more pollution" Not really, that was back in the 70s. To move around you personally, a modern 737 emits less than a car, unless the car gets 116 MPG. from wikipedia "Fuel economy in aircraft" Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX-9 First Flown: 2017 Passenger: 180 FUEL EFFICIENCY PER SEAT: 2.02 L/100 km (116 mpg‑US)
@romanrat5613
@romanrat5613 2 жыл бұрын
@@neutrino78x theres a whole lot of bullshit to unpack here. Easiest is "planes don't pollute that much!" They might pollute less than everyone driving their own vehicle, but not nearly as much as an electrical train. Planes might travel faster, but factor in arriving at the airport 2 hours early + half an hour after arrival. Not faster for lots of trips. Planes are also more expensive with carbon taxes, which represent that actual complete cost of traveling by air. And for INTERCITY trips, it is absolutely fucking not 80% by car in europe Point is, HSR is the best for 1-3 hour trips. This includes things like the NE corridor, SE, Chicago hub, texas, and yes, LA to SF. Which would take under 3 hours.

The run thru tracks are important for hsr, but also regional commuter rail. You can have metrolink trains to oc, sbern, Riverside, Palmdale, ventura 2 to 4 times per hour all day rather than every 2 hours off peak with last trains at 7pm. As central LA are builds subways and lrt, it is easier to get around from far suburbs once you get to union Station. As metro runs 21 hours 7 days a week but metrolink is so infrequent esp weekends.

Hannah Miyamoto Excuse me but is LA’s Union Station being designed to be a shelter for homeless people. I was not aware of that. I do know that hospitals are designed to take care of sick people. You have me very confused, Hannah.

@neutrino78x

@@aaronmiller5012 yup. A much better plan is just enhance the speed of existing Amtrak. All we have to do is connect Surfliner to Capitol Corridor and then you could go from Fresno all the way to Los Angeles and it will take four or five hours. Of course also eliminate the grade crossings and add passing rail where needed. They're already working on this, it's in the California Rail Plan. Just the grade crossings alone will take years. But it's way cheaper than the CAHSR plan and not much slower (125 max, 90-100 average).

But it could be too small right after opening the tunnel and underground platforms. 6 tracks won't be enough to turn around all caltrain and highspeed trains. It could be enough, if the tunnel is extended under the bay, making it a through station too
@californiamade5608
@californiamade5608 4 жыл бұрын
Nicolas Blume it’s fine how it is. It’s not small at all. No need to make it a through station because SF is the end of the map for the future HSR.

California has a GDP of $3.2 trillion which makes it number one of any state or province in the world. And their population will reach 50 million by 2050. Building high speed rail shouldn’t be a problem for California.

Several top administrators working on the bullet train tell NBC Bay Area that the state is on the verge of potentially losing billions in federal grants for unrelated infrastructure projects like pothole maintenance and public transit upgrades due to mismanagement of high speed rail. When the state accepted $3.5 billion in federal grants to start construction in the Central Valley, that money came with a catch. The High Speed Rail Authority must make significant progress by December 2022 or the feds can withhold funding for future grants until the grant for high speed rail is repaid.

The newest audit of the High-Speed Rail Authority says it spends $6.2 million a day. That's $43.4 million a week, or $2.26 billion a year. Since those numbers are all a little hard to grasp, think about it this way: The California High-Speed Rail Authority is spending 4,300 bucks every second.
