If LA Union Station is being reconfigured to be a run-through station to create a better flow for trains, then the same logic should be applied for the Transbay Transit Center in SF which is currently configured as a stub-end station. It doesn't need to necessarily be right away, but in order to meet the expected demand of both Caltrain and CAHSR trains a return loop needs to be completed within a few years of Transbay opening for train traffic so trains can enter and leave the station in the same direction thus allowing more trains to enter the station at a time since the flow will always be in the same direction. Especially since Transbay as built will have half the number of tracks and platforms as the current 4th and King Caltrain station.

Excellent. I have been looking forward to seeing this on here. Most people, it seems, are unaware of how many projects directly related and largely paid for by CA HSR are happening in Southern California. They think of HSR as only being in the San Joaquin Valley. But many major improvement projects, like grade crossing projects that are underway in SoCal as well as LA Union Station, are happening in large part in preparation for HSR. It would be beneficial to educate the public much more about the relationship between CA HSR and these projects.

It is expensive but California and the United States need to start building high speed rail :) later it will be cheeper.
@peterbelanger40943 жыл бұрын
The western United States is an extremely challenging terrain for any kind of rail construction, and even more so for high speed. A little tougher than the rolling hills (or even the Alps) of Europe, or the flood plains of China. Expensive is an understatement. Lots and lots of rock will have to be cut. Many tunnels and bridges will be needed. Routes will be much more curvy, meaning lower speeds and longer distances. And how is train travel going to become popular enough to fund all that? Here, in the US??? Yeah, good luck. Trains are just not a thing here, that's not going to change for generations, if at all.

@@romanrat5613 "here is no reason we don't have HSR service between cities that would take 1-4 hours. " Nah bro because a 4 hour train ride is still a 1 hour airplane. CAHSR if it were ever completed would take 4 hours, but the plane is 1 hour. So it's stupid. It will get Those Who Would Otherwise Drive (which is nobody, traffic on I-5, 101 and 99 is practically zero because there's nobody driving all the way from SF to LA) and tourists. Just like in Europe. Tourists take HSR, locals fly. Especially if the train is like 3 or 4 hours and the plane is 1 hour. Show me anywhere in the free world where a 4 hour train took away from demand for a 1 hour plane ride! 80% of ground transportation in Europe is still done with CARS. (Just like 80% of traffic in the NEC is cars btw. Amtrak is less than 20%.) "Obviously it would not be feasible to connect every city on the east coast to the west coast, but plenty of regions of the US have similar density to Europe. " They're too far apart, is the problem. We have plenty of trains in the Bay Area. There are plenty of trains in LA/SD ("LOSSAN"). Problem is they are 380 miles apart. Similar issue with Chicago to NEC. Lots of trains in the NEC, lots of trains in Chicago area, but the two regions are 800 miles apart. "Also, planes cause a lot more pollution" Not really, that was back in the 70s. To move around you personally, a modern 737 emits less than a car, unless the car gets 116 MPG. from wikipedia "Fuel economy in aircraft" Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX-9 First Flown: 2017 Passenger: 180 FUEL EFFICIENCY PER SEAT: 2.02 L/100 km (116 mpg‑US)
@romanrat56132 жыл бұрын
@@neutrino78x theres a whole lot of bullshit to unpack here. Easiest is "planes don't pollute that much!" They might pollute less than everyone driving their own vehicle, but not nearly as much as an electrical train. Planes might travel faster, but factor in arriving at the airport 2 hours early + half an hour after arrival. Not faster for lots of trips. Planes are also more expensive with carbon taxes, which represent that actual complete cost of traveling by air. And for INTERCITY trips, it is absolutely fucking not 80% by car in europe Point is, HSR is the best for 1-3 hour trips. This includes things like the NE corridor, SE, Chicago hub, texas, and yes, LA to SF. Which would take under 3 hours.

When is this rediculas project expected to break ground?

The newest audit of the High-Speed Rail Authority says it spends $6.2 million a day. That's $43.4 million a week, or $2.26 billion a year. Since those numbers are all a little hard to grasp, think about it this way: The California High-Speed Rail Authority is spending 4,300 bucks every second.

We should’ve privatized The California High Speed Rail project. Like Florida or Texas. They’re building rail lines for a fraction of the cost and at no expense of the tax dollar.
