I had the chance to interact with the very young caique once, and it was the most social attention seeking bird I've ever seen in my life. It was squeaking and reaching out to every single person that got close to it trying to be picked up and held, and when someone would hold it the bird would absolutely fall in love. When the bird was set down you could see it panic as it wanted to be picked up again.

Our caique girl has So. Much. Energy. We have an entire room set up for her, including multiple ceiling perches, lots of toys, etc, and she uses every piece. She also bonded with both my wife and I, so you're spot on with their social nature. She gives plenty of warning before she bites, but if I miss too many signals, she'll sometimes draw blood. That said, she's the perfect bird for our household.

I got a 7 years old male caique at $1200, he was label as an aggressive bird. After few months he was being very evil with every body, he was absolutely controlling the house. I decided return the bird but realize, who will love him like that?... and changed my mind deciding be more patient, every time he turned evil, I put a towell on him and put him on my chest walking with him as a baby, calming him, talking and loving him more ... I learn to manage his emotions. Mylo is living 8 years more with us, we found out no body can sleep when he is out of his cage. That turn his black side and he attack very very bad. He is part of the family, he is cute most of the time, dance very well, bond with one of the family at the time and being annoying follow them like a shadow for all the house !! You need to be plenty of time to have a caique. My caique pull out his chest feathers when he spend to much time is his cage alone, he is smart bird, and he really think he is the boss of the house.

BirdTricks - JamieLeigh! I am so glad you posted this. In September we have two baby White Bellied Caiques on the way, at first we were hestitant to watch your video thinking... "Oh man, she is going to say something to cause us to worry about our choice." These are our first birds, by the way. And the exact opposite is true, your overview has made us think even more of our choice. The Caique fits our lifestyle perfectly. And you are right about finding a Caique, we looked for quite a while, and have subscriptions on pet websites. It's not often that we see one. In fact I've never seen one in the rescues around here, and I live in a relatively large city in the United States. We will DEFINITELY be training Amari and Ilana (our male and female -- no relation) using your methods. I wanted to say something about the pronunciation because I just had to explain it to my daughter a day ago. Ca-i-que -- if anyone has a hard time remembering the I after the A, then just remember that "que" always makes a hard "K" sound in English. Or remember that if the I were not the third letter then we would pronounce it "See-ake." OK, maybe that doesn't really help anyone. It should probably be spelt "Kay-ique". The "a" making a long "i" sound is indeed confusing. But that's just how English is. :) Also, you sent us a cameo of widget for Jacqueline, she was so surprised! Sorry I forgot to record it. She didn't believe it was real at first, didn't even think you were talking to her and that I had just found some random video lol! FYI everyone that is looking for a Caique breeder -- they are out there, there are a handful of reputable breeders. Hopefully in about 2-3 years time there will be another one in the midwest area!

Interesting video, even after I’ve been owning a caique for years. Mine has one significant exception, though: he does not easily accept male guests at home. He immediately loves girls so much, that I have a hard time taking him off the girls’ shoulder. He immediately hate boys so much, that I must keep him in the cage while the guests are around, otherwise he would try to pierce their skin.

Ours def has different relationships with each person in our house. She's most bonded to my boyfriend and will do anything for him, has a more playful relationship with my roommate and her and I are like business only haha. She learns the best with me- I honestly just train her like I've trained every dog I've ever owned. She can identify 4 colors, touch nose and finger, dance, shake hands, recall, will fly to spots on demand- etc. Like you say she learned extremely fast and I was so surprised to find her so focused!

My mother in law loved watching my Caique Sunday. She was in our livingroom and right next to the TV. And my mother in law said she missed all her programs because she’d watch Sunday. She said she was constant motion. And she’s ALWAYS loved loved her toys. And she definitely prefers me to anyone, BUT, she will go happily to my husband and son and daughter. She loves everyone. She’s very funny and super smart. And we love her so so so so much! She loves going outside too. And will actually shower in the sprinklers. She loves to nibble on everything that we are eating, so you have to remember that your plate is HER plate too. Lol. I can’t recommend them enough. They’re beaks can inflict a nasty bite, but they aren’t usually bitey and definitely nothing like a bite from a bigger bird. I have a severe Macaw too and he’s never bitten me as hard as he can, ive only gotten a warning bite. But even then, his bite is much worse. And he’s a lot louder. And he is really the epitome of the one person bird. He likes me PERIOD. If you are looking to get a parrot. Find a Caique. You won’t be sorry. Jamie, do you think the black headed caiques personalities are different than the white bellied or the same? I’ve heard they are different.

White bellied are commonly known to be less likely to be "aggressive" but like all birds in my experience...They're all UNIQUE and no one bird is the same. Our white bellied is more bark than bite 100% She's only ever bitten my fiance to the point of blood and that was 100% not her intention to bite my fiance while her breaking up a fight with our other birds. If anything that's been the biggest downside is that caiques have a really really hard time getting along with other birds because other birds are not used to how caiques play or do not want to play how a caique wants to play like rolling around and wrestling. On top of that they are not as territorial as quakers are but definitely have the same lack of fear in their own "territory" or "home" towards other birds no matter their size.

you need to talk to breeders of Caique as they are tree top dwellers and require a higher amount of fruit as they eat a lot of flowers and fruit and they have a digestive system that require a natural high sugar of fresh fruit. One of my favorite birds, I raised them for 15 years

I’ve noticed my caique when he starts to get too heightened he’ll sort of do that puffing of feathers a lot more often and randomly start to groom even if it’s just for a split second. Doug will also EYE PIN, common way to notice if a bit is too heightened, or he starts to try to regurgitate on me. Many ways to notice if he’s getting a little bit too into what he’s doing.

@@excaliber8794 Errr.... with the prices of cages right now it is exceptionally more than $120 for a very large cage. At least a name brand cage that is. I saw rusty used cages going for $150-200 -- and they were maybe 36x24x36 size cages -- a good size but not HUGE. You can't even find a macaw sized cage with the proper bar spacing. (7/8 or less -- though I say 5/8 is better based on all my research and my own measurements.) The one cage, that is huge and not an aviary, that I did find was on the order of $800-1500 depending on model. But you can't buy them, they are completely out of stock right now due to all the shipping problems. I won't mention how much the bird itself costs -- the recent interest in birds due to COVID has driven the prices up. Let's just say the bird is far more expensive than a nice LARGE cage.

Thank you for this information! I had been considering a caique as my second bird if and when everything with my baby IRN got settled, it sounds like my only concern is whether someone is around frequently enough. It would still be a year or two before I'm ready to add to my budding flock, plenty of time to consider. Also, thank you to those who mentioned Shady Pines Aviary! Local availability of caiques is not the best, and it looks like they also breed birds in the Brotogeris family. One of my most beloved childhood pets was a grey-cheeked parakeet (Brotogeris pyrrhoptera) named Roscoe, and while they're not available these days due to their threatened population status, it still makes me happy to see others close to his kind doing well.

@venusgaytrap6960 2 жыл бұрын
@@addisonschultz8275 Thanks for letting me know! Do you speak from your own experience owning caiques? I actually adopted a pair and they're close to sexual maturity. It's starting to show in the male but as of now he never really bit without showing prior signs and they're both pretty tame compared to what I've heard so far, especially the female one. The biggest problem I have so far is that the male one is VERY territorial and doesn't let any stranger close to the cage without threatening to bite or dive bomb them so I have to be careful in that regard. He has no problem with letting me close though and I can handle him without any issues. However, what can be considered true is that the male one gets in those weird raptor moods in which his eyes flare red, he constricts his pupils and ruffles his feathers and shows aggressive behaviour, usually towards his mate... either he attacks her or shows mating behaviour, like regurgitating with her or trying to jump her. There's enough space for her to get away though and she never got hurt by him. It's definitely triggered by hormones and can seemingly happen out of nowhere. I ignore him during those moods - good thing is it's very easy to spot when he gets like that. Now that I have some experiences with owning caiques I agree that they're not good starter birds and a lot of thought and research has to be done before getting them. I did that and I'd say I'm doing fairly well with them but these are birds that definitely need to be properly handled and trained. I love them to death and will keep them until the very end but it's no wonder they get rehomed often after hitting sexual maturity.

I rescued a 2 year old caique, from a very miserable condition. He was infested with mites, had severe discolouration on his feathers (mostly due to a bad diet). He has been with me for half a year now. Completely accepted me as his ‘daddy’. Surprisingly, he has no interest in my other birds, and loves to be alone with me. While he is extremely tame, cuddly and intelligent, he is also very, very needy and he specifically wants me (and not my family members). This sometimes makes me extremely stressed when I’m working a job as well, but I love him so much, and I’m happy he has found his forever home with me.

Hello dear all, I haven't been watching so much of your movies reason is i still see your face of when you lost your amazing Toucan which i shall not name. But, i am currently underway to home a baby Caique. And of course the best way to study and know about a bird is you. With regards the diet, do you have list of what to feed (eventually when my baby grows) and a feeding time table please?

We own multiple caiques and theyre all playful in their own way. One likes to roll on her back while others like to crawl into pockets and hoods or hang upside down. They all really love other people and all of the family members. We live in Germany and I'd say it's actually not that hard to find caiques (at least if you're subscribed to bird magazines where people can put advertisements in)

Good to know! I'm in Germany, too, and wasn't really aware of caiques until I saw quite a few of them in a sanctuary (Vogelburg Weilrod) four years ago. Now that I've learned a bit more about them, they're one of the two most likely birds I'd consider (next to cockatiels) if I'd change from budgies to another type of parrot.

Honestly, part of why I don't have "play time" with toys and my cockatoo, is that it goes from fun to unmanageable so fast. Cheeky gets heightened so easily, that I just stopped these types of interactions. Like you guys say, quality of time is more important than quantity lol. I let her have foot toys and hangout with me while chewing something, but if she gets to the point of chasing and body checking a toy I'm out. That's for her to do in the cage.

I have a true pair of cakes lol - I'm Scottish, but cah-eeks is the proper way to pronounce it lol. Mine are gorillas in feather form. I had six hand-reared babies that kept me on my toes. They are just a fabulous birds to have. I would certainly recommend them even as a first bird. I used to do the hop with two fingers with the babies and it seems it's hard-wired into them.

I just got my WB Caique girl shipped to me. I waited so long for her arrival and I am so disappointed. She is flighty and does not step up and I have to chase her around the cage to get her out. The breeder obviously hand fed her and did not spend any quality time with her. I am not new to birds and I am now questioning if I want to keep this bird and continue trying to do anything with her. She runs to the back of the cage when I try to hold her, it is like she is terrified of human hands. I realize she just got shipped and thrown in different environment but I think she should not be afraid of human hands since she was hand fed. She was obviously not abundance weaned. The breeder said they do not teach commands as far as stepping up but that is part of the weaning process IMO. The breeder also told me in order to interact with her I have to chase her around the cage to hold her and hold her up against my chest and scratch her head so she gets use to me but when I do this she tries to get away. Very frustrating to pay this much for a bird that I cannot even handle and enjoy :( Any tips?

How does owning a caique compare to owning say a high energy dog? I understand it would’ve a huge commitment of time and patience regardless. I have a cockatiel that I hand reared and so far, it’s been very rewarding and hasn’t taken up too much time, especially now that he/she is weaned. They’re perfectly happy to just chill with me all day when I’m working. But dogs are louder, messier, bigger and require a lot of attention and space to exercise yet I’ve heard all of those reasons used as reasons not to get a caique. I’m only wondering why they’re not more popular as pets, they just seem like flying puppies to me. You’ll have to excuse my ignorance on this, I’ve only kept budgies and a cockatiel and I appreciate caiques are different but are there any major drawbacks I’m missing?

Hello, i'm thinking about getting a Caique but i have some doubts. I had 5 years of esperince with a cockatiel so it wouldn't be the first time parrot for me. But i work 8 hours/day, at the moment this wouldn't be a problem because my parents recently retired so the parrot wouldn't be alone (in fact they interacted a lot with my cockatiel). But i'm 25 and i plan to live with my girlfriend in the next 1-2 years. So i'm worried that the parrot will be alone for too much time in the future...

I got a 11 week old green cheek conure yesterday. I would like its nails to be trimmed, I know they're too long, but I fear it'd be too stressful to take her to grooming right away. How long should I wait?
@epicparakeet
@epicparakeet 2 жыл бұрын
My personal opinion is that it would be best to take her in as soon as possible because it's better for her overall wellbeing. They will be fearful of car rides afterwards but you should continue to take them on car rides to places that mean something good so cars aren't scary. In the long-term, invest in perches with a sanded side (not all the way around with sand because it can hurt their feet) so their nails can be trimmed as they grow out. I think initially, you should get her nails clipped and if the sand perches don't quite do it, you should take them in to be done professionally. Once again, this is just my opinion.

I'm considering a bird instead of another dog. I'm 36 year dad, with an older dog. I've always been an animal person, and I don't mean your average, I mean hand feeding wild animals as child animal person. I'm very hands on, and active with animals, so I think if i did this, a Caique would fit right in with our family. I haven't actually had a bird as a companion before, but I'm pretty confident. I'm pretty proud of my Doberman, he's one of the best behaved pets of any species, I'm sure he'll be ok with a small animal. He doesn't even chase squirrels.

I lost my Doberman/Am Staff hybrid about 9 months ago. Best dog I've ever had. Dobs are EVERYTHING. I'm also a dog person. 35 years of owning, training, rescue. Due to health reasons I can't handle a dog so bought a lovebird. Not my first bird. Birds are very different than dogs. They don't have a hierarchical society. There are no alphas! It looks like you are educating yourself the right way before you take on one of these amazing, long-lived creatures. Good luck on your parrot journey!
