Before the war, Stan Raikes was Deputy Bandmaster at Norland Castle, under Bandmaster Gurney Doe. My paternal grandparents were Corps Officers at the time, and when my father was called up, he spent some time in Egypt. For a while he played with the Cairo Red Shield Band either on horn or Eb bass. Bringing it full circle, I played with the Red Shield Band in the 60s (comprised mainly of players from the Brigade of Guards and the RAF Central Band).

Apologies we have been so long to reply. I am aware of two people whose fathers played in this band. If you're interested I can put you in touch with them?

My father, Jack Poulton (trombone) spoke of your great grandfather, his name is very familiar to me. He also spoke about playing in Ezbekieh Gardens in central Cairo, which your great grandfather outlined in his writings about the Cairo Red Shield Band. He left the middle east after Tobruk & El Alamein, and went on to Yugoslavia I'm told, so I guess he wasn't in the middle east after 1942. He then went to northern India and served in Burma for the remainder of the war.

saltaire walker to try and help you, the comments you read with this track were written by your grandfather, published in the musician in 1978 the last known record of the cairo band belonged to my father cyril marchant, the music you hear is NOT the cairo band ti hear the band www.regalzonophone.com.au on the non rz page. the record along with all my findings on the band photos, write ups, playouts ect. were gifted to the salvation army heritage centre london in june 2016

Thank you for your views. We at no point indicate the recording is the Cairo Band playing. We can confirm that all material for this short video was gifted to us from a Salvationist whose father was in the band and to whom the photographs were part of his own personal records. We will be very pleased on our next visit to the heritage centre to look at the information you gifted, thank you.
