PHOENIX from a migraine and being pressured hard by Phoenix's defense, Caitlin Clark still delivered Sunday. The Fever guard finished one rebound short of what would have been the first triple-double by a WNBA rookie as Indiana beat the Mercury 88-82.
The game was dubbed "The Goat" (the Mercury's Diana Taurasi) vs. "The Rook" (Clark) -- one a 42-year-old legend who has won three WNBA titles and five Olympic gold medals, the other a 22-year-old playing for the first time in Phoenix.
As is typical for Clark and Indiana this season, Fever supporters made up a decent-sized portion of the sellout crowd of 17,071 at Footprint Center. Despite the Fever falling behind 17-4 to open the game, trailing by 11 at halftime and being down as much as 15 in the second half, the Fever sent their fans home happy.
Clark didn't come to the postgame news conference because she wasn't feeling well, but did talk briefly to ESPN's Christine Williamson on court after the game.
"I'm just happy we won," said Clark, who finished with 15 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds. "It was cool to play against [Taurasi], and obviously a really great game. This crowd was absolutely incredible."
Taurasi, in her 20th WNBA season, is the WNBA's all-time leading scorer. Clark finished her Iowa career in early April as the all-time leading scorer in Division I basketball, men or women.
Both were No. 1 draft picks with big workloads as rookies. But Taurasi, WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2004, came of age in the days before social media, let alone NIL deals. Those things have greatly impacted Clark's profile. Her rookie season has been in a much bigger spotlight because of technology differences and the growth of the WNBA the past 20 years.
Taurasi's remark during the college season that "Reality is coming," regarding Clark's transition to the WNBA was no different than anything the veteran has said about rookies her whole career. After Sunday's game, Taurasi praised Clark.
"It's amazing what Caitlin's been able to do in her short career so far," Taurasi said. "The one thing that I really love about her, she loves the game. You can tell she's put the work in. ... It's been a lot of pressure, a lot of things thrown at her, and she keeps showing up and keeps getting better every single game.
"So her future is super bright, and being a veteran and being in this league for a long, long time, it is pretty cool to see that and go into the future."
Taurasi, the oldest active player in the WNBA, is the gold standard for guards in the league, and she did her part Sunday with 19 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Fellow guard Natasha Cloud had 15 points and 7 assists, while center Brittney Griner led Phoenix with 24 points.
But the Fever won the rebounding battle 42-28 led by forward NaLyssa Smith's 15 boards. Centers Aliyah Boston (17 points) and Temi Fagbenle (10), forward Smith (12) and guard Kelsey Mitchell (16) joined Clark in double-digit scoring.
"We continue to tell each other, 'We're good, stay here, pay attention to what we have to do,'" forward Aliyah Boston said. "Use that as energy for us, not as a distraction, not worrying about if they're going to foul us hard or not. Every night it's going to be a battle, so we have to be ready for it."
It was the first time since 2022 that the Fever were able to rally for a victory from down at least 15 points. After going 1-8 to start the season in May, the Fever went 7-4 in June. Indiana hasn't made the playoffs since 2016 but is currently in position to do so.
"That's a team that for the last couple years [has been] trying to get to back to their glory days of Tamika Catchings and putting up a banner," Taurasi said of the Fever. "I think what [Clark is] doing for that team right now is pretty impressive."
Clark was 4-of-14 from the field, taking shots against six different Mercury defenders throughout the game. But her passing was one of the biggest keys to the Fever victory.
The game got chippy at points, with the teams combining for five technical fouls and two flagrant fouls. Despite the Mercury being the more veteran team, the Fever kept their cool down the stretch.

Her migraine was Copper. Copper dogged her defensively the entire game. Copper sacrificed her scoring (she's the 3rd leading scorer in the league) to focus on defending CC and it worked. CC was a non-factor scoring wise. 4-14 made CC the worst shooter on the team today.

@@antonmcgill7161I'm watching the infancy of greatness. I'm watching the gal who broke Maravich's all-time NCAA scoring record. And, contrary to her haters' claims, she averaged 19.9 shots/game vs Pete's 38.1. She also had 600 fewer shots despite playing more games than The Pistol. Jordan didn't break that scoring record. She's a rookie and will only get better...as if Jordan had stellar games every time he hit the floor. We tuned in to see what he'd do next. I tune in to see what Clark will do next. The fact she's firing from distances atypical for the women's game, should force defenders to have come out much further which opens the floor more for Mitchell...and others...

Yo, I was at this game. The energy was wild. You would've thought prime Jordan was in the building. That is no joke. She only drained 2 threes but the crowd erupted on both. Even during pregame shoot around. As soon as she stepped onto the court, the crowd already began cheering. Mercury does this thing where anytime any player goes to shoot freethrow, announcers will say the player's name, followed by, "is shooting 2" and the crowd responds with "is missing 2" if it's an opposing player and "is making 2" if it's a home player. Not 1 soul could be heard saying CC was "missing 2." You had to be there to feel the energy.

I don't blame Taurasi for saying the "reality check" thing. That's probably the way it's been with every rookie until Caitlin Clark showed up. Taurisi showed her proper respect in pre-game and after the game and especially in the press conference. Also: Clark isn't fully adapted to the league yet (Taurisi is right about this). When Clark gets it 100% figured out, watch out. She's going to destroy. It's going to be fun to watch. The thing that's unexpected to those veterans is that Clark is a newbie, but she's so good that her newbie performance can still beat them. I would bet that every veteran in every professional league would have the same reaction. That's a pro's attitude. You put in the work, you're good and you know you're good. The only way to change that mindset is for someone to show you. Caitlin Clark is showing them. I'd be disappointed in them if they just gave up before they ever played against each other.

Dinosaur Taurasi was correct when she said "reality is coming" and that playing against veterans in the WNBA one has to be superhuman. Indeed, Dinosaur Taurasi is not superhuman playing in the WNBA (she is just a grown woman veteran). It is Caitlin Clark, a rookie, who is looking superhuman playing against grown veterans. That is the reality that Dinosaur Taurasi says is coming when Caitlin Clark arrives in the WNBA.

What are you watching??? DT outplayed CC in every way. Caitlyn didn't beat anything the team won. You noticed they started winning and playing better when she stopped scoring. Caitlyn throw the ball all over the place. Just because she throw the ball does she throw to the right place nope. Her slowing down not scoring they play better. But she had good numbers she a shooter with can't she score. Tell me name a pass teammate of CC who said anything good about her. Kaite M hasn't. Nobody wanted to play with her at Iowa. If you listen to any PG they tell you you learn your teammates where they like the ball. The fever is not suited for a run and gun style it's funny because that's less coaching. So Caitlyn has to sut and support her teammates. Caitlyn plays little to no defense can't make a jumper or a layup. She get her asst because she shoots deep 3s you have to guard her deep witch leave open space. Omg they played defense on her crazy 🤪 fan support have nothing to do with greatness on the court. She is not there. She would not start if she wasn't CC. 50 more turnovers then anyone else. And it's there fault. Man lol stop

This has gone from a subpar WNBA sport to a multimillion dollar WNBA sport basically overnight. The interested now is crazy! We are in a new era!

i like the slam dunk power plays in the NBA but it is so refreshing watching the finesse aspect of the game with the ladies and Clark is like Brady, sees the whole field the offense and what the defense is doing and can anticipate and react with lightning speed. Being a team mate of hers you have to play with your head on a swivel and expect a pass at any moment.

Reality came after about 10 games for CC. She struggled with the triple teaming and the increased pace of the game for like 10 games, with a schedule that was stacked for the Fever to lose, and now reality is here - she's 3rd in the league in assists per game and generally has been staying in the top 20 players in steals, blocks, rebounds, points, and assists.

THE EVEN BETTER THING IS THAT BEFORE AND AFTER EVERY SINGLE AWAY GAME KIDS AND ADULTS ARE WAITING FOR CCs AUTOGRAPH, SOME WEARING THE HOME TEAMS SHIRTS, CC's OPPOSING TEAM, AND THEY WANT HER AUTOGRAPH AND DONT WANT THE AUTOGRAPH FROM ANYONE ON THE HOME TEAM! Lmaooooooo actually if you listen to what Diana said and not the media/Clark fans version. She said that Clark is gonna be an incredibly and successful WNBA player like she has been at every level she's played at, but that there is a learning and adjustment period. Like when you go from high school to college, it's different challenges. Or college to med school for example. That was the entire context paraphrased. She never hated ironically but people took only the small part about the WNBA being a different level for Clark and continue to misinterpret it as Diana hating on Clark and that Clark won't be successful. Now after the game they heard the positive words from Diana and think she's been humbled. No Diana has always thought Clark was amazing. It's ridiculous how the media works and the fans just jump without any context.

Looool not a little while. She's still learning and not there yet. Her passing is decent but still many awful passes if you watch full games. Also no midrange and her three point shot is streaky. She will be fine but ironically nothing dt said was wrong. Not only was she completely right, she was actually not hating if you listen to the full context of that statement people continue to take out of context. Actually she gave Clark props in the actual answer and said many times Clark is gonna be successful in the WNBA but there will be a transition period. Absolutely right. Clark is mediocre at scoring and can't create her own shot at this level. Great passer and high IQ though. And also bad defender at times but very good help side defender.

@loverofhumanity 14 күн бұрын
@@GrowYour-Own nah she's allowed to have her opinion on whether she thought Clark was the best player in the draft. For example there's a legitimate debate whether players like Paige and def juju Watkins are better than Clark. Imho if you want pure scorers off isolation both are better. Not to mention Clark has never been a good defender in college. I tend to agree that it's a bad move but don't pretend that constitutes complete hate when she's on multiple occasions hyped Clark up. I've seen it multiple times on ESPN when shes talked about Clark. This narrative needs to stop because it's factually incorrect and misleading.
