I feel the quiz is intentionally a "what facts were you taught in school that are now straight-up wrong?" knowledge check.

Yeah, the game is set in the 90s, so it intentionally trips you up there in a clever way.

it occurs to me now that the mermaid quiz is even trickier then you might think, while this game is currently set in 1990, the park closed in 1988 so that's the latest the info in the quiz could be from

2:50 IIRC, before the current theory of a meteor being behind the mass extinction of the dinosaurs, it was believed to be a massive volcanic eruption or eruptions. There is old artwork of dinosaurs that depict it. Its a shame, because you did point out that the game takes place in 1990, A quick wiki-check says that the meteor theory was first proposed in 1980, but it took over a decade of research before it became the leading theory.

I remember hearing a fact that the cause of death of the dinosaurs had many theories from volcanic activity, diseases, and the ice age. What is weird is why did the meteor becomes a leading theory of the cause of death of the dinosaurs?
@werdinator12343 ай бұрын
i believe they found what looked like a "kill-all-the-dinosaurs" sized crater/rock formation thing on the bottom of the ocean somewhere, and that lead a lot of credence to the theory. also dust particles and shit, but im not a paleontologist, so eh.
@MrLordmonty13 ай бұрын
It's been awhile since I looked into this myself and my knowledge needs to be probably updated, but there is a massive crater in Mexico which most people believe to be the impact site of the asteroid that wiped out a large portion of Earth.
@IzzyHackworth3 ай бұрын
There's a layer of iridium marking the end cretaceous rocks all over the world, strongly suggesting a big asteroid, because most of the iridium on Earth is sunk into the mantle and core

We're incapable of recognizing Europe as a whole for some reason, just whatever specific country(ies) are the immediate subject of conversation
@pluemas3 ай бұрын
@@Actual-Jesse I wonder if it's due to the different cultures. It's easy to think of the States as a whole as it's fairly homogeneous in culture, but the differences between the France, Germany, and Poland are way more pronounced than the differences between Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Because of that we tend to be considered more as individuals, rather than parts of a larger organisation.

Woolie. Guy who is interested in space, ecology, and climate change here, with a degree focusing on the lattermost. Rising sea levels is the only thing there that definitely didn't wipe out the dinos. Acid rain may have formed as a result of a volcanic eruption, and a meteorite may have caused sea temperatures to become warm enough to cause a "hypercane" - basically a turbo-hurricane that is tall enough to pump water into the stratosphere, which would also maybe cause devastating acid rain. But currently, we think it was probably an asteroid causing a long winter, I believe, though the idea of a Flood Basalt eruption is also possible, since that's what caused the Great Dying.
