I learned from Robin that the 'hardness' factor of fondant is also due to it's surrounding temperature. If it's a warm time of year, it's naturally softer. If it's dead-of-winter, it's not as pliable until it gets warmed up by your hands. Made sense to me, because I filmed her in the video (here) in February (she used the microwave to soften it). I just finished filming her last month (for future DVD), and she didn't use the microwave at all!

Robin orders hers online. She uses the Bakels brand. A couple of folks have said they can get premade fondant from Michaels, walmart, and/or cake decorating supply stores. You can get a buttercream recipe from any basic cookbook. Simple ingredients: butter + powdered sugar + milk

What an adorable cake! I just had my first try at making fondant (finished about 1/2 an hour ago, actually). Turns out, I didn't make enough, but it was okay cuz I hadn't planned on making it, it was just an on the fly sort of thing, to see how it came out. Instead of covering the cake, I cut out different sized polka dots from it and placed them on my buttercream frosted cake. At least this way I'll be able to tell if I like this recipe or not. Great work on the cake, I love those colors!

Water and clear alcohol make excellent glues. Everclear has a higher alcohol content so it dries quicker than vodka. Vodka dries quicker than water. Just a little dab on the tip of a fine brush is often enough to 'glue' fondant decorations onto the sides of a cake. Clear alcohol is also good for making paints using luster or chalk dust. Add a few drops to a palette with dust and swirl with a paint brush. It also works well with paste icing colors.

@Thepianofreak17 Robin uses cornstarch - it's to keep the fondant from sticking to the table top as you roll it out. It doesn't affect the flavor. The food coloring gels she uses are Americolor and Spectrum.

Robin makes her 3 dimensional flowers a day ahead. She shapes them, then lays them on a bed of foam peanuts (w/sheet of plastic wrap between them) to keep their shape as they dry out. Very gently take the 3D flower, add a small dab of frosting to the bottom area where it will make contact with the cake, and stick it on. It should stay. Hopefully this helps. In the new DVD being edited, there is a whole segment on this.

@suzesteele Yes. The first is an undercoat which she chilled in the fridge for a bit, then applied a 2nd coat before putting in back into the cooler for awhile. Then she carefully laid the rolled out fondant over the cake.

Butter cream frosting is a pretty common frosting. It's not what Robin puts in the frosting to harden it, she pops the frosted cake in the cooler (fridge) for a bit for it to be firm enough so the fondant can be placed on top. She says this at :40 in the video. Hope this helps you!

If you're just starting out working with fondant, the Wilton stuff is great. It really gives you a feel for how the fondant should be worked. Once you're comfortable enough with working with it, venture out into making your own fondant from the countless online recipes available. I don't recommend starting with a recipe because you'll have to tweak the recipe to get it pliable. Recipes seldom turn out correctly on the first try, as any baker knows well enough! ~grin~
@cookingupastory

That's the fondant. It comes white, she adds different food coloring gels to it (thus pink, green and blue). It's sorta like a very sweet play-doh. You can buy it premade at cake decorating stores, or online.

Marzipan is also called amond paste - it is mainly made of almond meal, icing sugar & egg yokes. Fondant is made mainly of icing sugar. They taste totally different. In Australia marzipan is used (instead of buttercream) as a base layer before the fondant goes on. You can check out my blue marzipan roses compared to my fondant roses in my main clip on my profile page. Hope that helps ; )

@mariarut83 The flowers are made out of fondant. Robin cut them out, formed them, then let them dry out a bit in order for them to keep their 3 dimensional shape. For the larger flowers, she attached them to the cake with a dab of buttercream frosting.

@JaiquitayYo not sure what you mean...Robin brushed on some water to the backside of the dots and flowers before sticking them on the fondant. The cake had a layer of buttercream frosting, which was chilled after applying, then she put the fondant over that. hope this answers your question!

@Cliquegirl233 the first layer of buttercream is the crumb coat - just enough buttercream is spread over the cake to keep the crumbs from getting in the main frosting layer. Chill for 15/20 minutes, until it is firm. Then apply the 2nd layer of buttercream. The outer layer you want to be very smooth b/c the fondant will lay on top of it. While it is chilling again (15/20 minutes), start rolling out the fondant. Hope it all goes well for you!!

@Tisha11066 Twice. The first time she just puts buttercream on the layers and lightly around - then cools before applying the final layer of buttercream. The reason is to keep the cake crumbs from getting into the buttercream as she applies it. After the final layer of buttercream goes on, it goes back into the cooler to firm up (the 2nd time) so that the fondant can be laid on top cleanly.

@missKaela523 Robin just dabs a little buttercream frosting on the underside of the flower just before putting it on the cake. And yes, the flowers are also made from fondant. Some are made the night before, but many of the little ones are made just before she puts them on.
