You are reading Cake very well. Each time that Cake starts to get bothered, you redirect her attention. You correct her, then go back to the lesson like the correction never happened. You are showing other horse people the correct way to train a horse. Your correction and your praise are measured in the appropriate amounts. I applaud your work. Thanks for sharing your videos.

I was loving all of this until i saw you whipping her. Even as a form of correction that’s just so unnecessary and you’re making riding an unpleasant experience. You obviously know how to correctly disengage your animal from hostility or bad movements, you’re very in control. There’s no need to hit the horse. Please don’t do that. And people are going to call me shitty and a snowflake but I genuinely think you look like a good teacher to your horse and use great positive reinforcement and are great and desensitization before getting on. It was so refreshing, but so ruined by the whipping.

@@faefiercevulpine6990 I’m smacking Cake with the tail of my rope, not a whip or anything that will damage her. Smacking a horse on the rear end as a correction is unpleasant, reinforcing that the behavior that is being corrected is not desired. A correction should be an unpleasant experience, so the animal strives to avoid the behavior that caused the correction in the future. My method of correction is not going to make riding as a whole an unpleasant experience, just the correction itself. I’m also wanting her to pick her feet up and work a little harder to disengage during the correction. It’s all about how hard they have to work when they’re being corrected that makes riding seem so much easier to them when they’re doing the right thing. Have you ever seen horses interact and correct each other in the pasture? It can be absolutely brutal. I have a video of two mares trying to assert dominance over each other that is a pretty real reminder that horses don’t use kind words to correct each other. Cake was unwilling to move out for me in this video, and offered ear pinning and even kicking out to try to assert herself. She was trying to get away with dominating me so she wouldn’t have to work as hard, and needed to be corrected in an assertive and uncomfortable manner. I’d rather smack a horse on the butt once than deal with the potentially dangerous behavior of kicking out to avoid work for a lifetime. First, I appreciate the intelligent and calm response explaining your point. So thank you! I guess i just disagree with the method - I understand horses and their brutality, I’ve seen a loooooooot of their assertions and battles. It’s interesting, to say the least XD but i just don’t think that, unless the animal is actively trying to hurt someone or overwhelming personal space, that should be done. I disagree with it, but as you said, at least it’s not a whip, and that’s great

@@faefiercevulpine6990 I love talking horses. They’re one of my favorite subjects. So I appreciate you as well for being able to have an intelligent conversation. When I would ask Cake to move out in the beginning, she would pin her ears. Ear pinning is a threat, and her eventual kicking out is a follow through of that threat. I don’t condone behavior that is threatening to me, and the kicking behavior is absolutely threatening to my well being as well as Cake’s. She almost fell down when she kicked out as she didn’t get her legs back under herself fast enough. If she fell or tripped hard enough to throw me, she could hurt herself and/or me. That is absolutely enough reason to get after her in the manner that I did for her attitude alone. I’m not in the school of “riding it out” when a horse misbehaves. I want to show the horse there is a better way to act and curb the behavior completely if I can. It makes for a lot safer horse in the long run, which is what I am ultimately after.
