I am not a professional musician. I played in school bands and churches. I used SONAR 8, X1, X2, and X3 and have the original instructions. The instructions were poorly written and had limited basic information and written in technical terminology, not common to musicians or other members of the society. After all, SONAR was made for the general public to have as well as professionals. These Videos are superior because the terminology is first clearly explained. As with any profession, the terminology is key to understanding any topic. As a medical provider and university educator, I too can explain the coronavirus in medical and scientific terms, What good is that to the average person, we all have to understand. Theses videos are professionally presented, clear, entertaining, short and to the point. Keep up the great work!

Another great video Mike. I appreciate how you mentioned the different VST groups, instruments, audio effects and midi effects as well as the division between 32 and 64 bits and VST2 versus VST3. Lots of piles for VSTs to be divided between! Using 32 bit VSTs in Cakewalk by BandLab appears to be problematic with some working using jBridge but many not working at all. As you mentioned in your video, the same is true with VST3s. Some VST3s crash in Cakewalk by BandLab but the VST2 works fine. Even most software developers say on their website to try the VST3 first and if it doesn't work use the corresponding VST2.

Thanks much for all the things you continue to teach me. I appeciate the file paths as well. Prior to VST3, it was easy to manage your VSTi's. However, since the dawn of VST3, some of them like to 'crap all over your hard drive' ....\programData ...\users\x\common files\blah blah blah....it can become maddening. Thanks for your explanations!

This video was very helpful to me. Your explanations clicked with me. The only thing that confused me for a moment was your pronunciation for "file path". My half deaf ears heard "fire dog." The background info on VSTs was also enlightening. Thank you. You may ask how does a half deaf person record anything. I simply make it sound good to my ears and if nobody vomits, it's okay!

Hello Mike; I have been following your videos and have found them most helpful and interesting. You keep things light and NOT boring. I have been writing songs for some time now, but have been stuck with recording with a dynamic microphone and straight into my sound card. OUCH! The outcome is very bad. Lately, I have upgraded my equipment to a Behringer xenyx usb mixer and a fair condenser microphone and the quality has increased drastically. I am new to Cakewalk also, but I love it! I fine it very powerful and with the free plugins I am starting to get better results. Please keep the informative videos coming. Dan for Colorado.

Mike this is a very important subject. Good topic. Sometimes the VST wants to install on a VST associated with Cakewalk. Other times a plug is set to be installed on a folder named Steinberg VST plug ins which is kind of a generic VST folder. Of course most plug ins give you the option of installing in a folder of your choice. Recently I have creating my own folder called VST plugins because I was fed up with having multiple VST folders. If you are new to audio recording this can be a confusing area. I have been recording for a while but even I have to be careful installing VST Plug ins or they get scattered all over your hard drive.

Thanks for this video tutorial. As a Cakewalk newby I found it useful, and especially the section on setting up plug-ins in non-standard directories (since I also have a D:\ data drive and an E:\ programs drive separate from my C:\ Windows drive. You suggested that given the option of 32 and 64 bit plugins, you'd go for 64 bit,which is fair enough - I also have 64 bit Windows 11 as my OS. But then you said that in the example there was an option for VST2 AND VST3 so you went for the VST2 version. Why was that? And why would you not go for VST3? What is the difference between 2 and 3? And would it 'harm' Cakewalk if you installed both? Thanks. I've subscribed to your video channel now, so am looking forward to learning more about the software (and watching more videos!).

I wonder if there's any way to customize the location of shared folders where audio plugins or other utilities will stay via advance installation options? I have a very small system drive (c drive) so I wonder if you could make a video on how to maximize other drives/external ssd etc for those fat babies (plugins, synths and more) at the beginning of installing the software. Many Thanks for these great videos. I am new to Cakewalk, and have been checking out quite a few of them. My laptop has Cubase 5 on it, and it has never worked for me. My question that I’m hoping you can help with is: Can I use the Cubase plug-ins in CbB? And if so, it sounds like it would just need the correct file path ? I just didn’t know if Cubase allowed other programs to access their plugins. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thx, again for the info.

Thanks for all your helpful videos, Mike. Do you have any suggestions as to how to import 3rd party VST3 plugin presets so they display in the plugs drop down menu, usually in the upper left? I can only find them in the drop down under the VST3 tab and it's extremely frustrating.

I just want to say thank you so much for ALL of your videos. If by chance, if you have not already done so, could you create, or direct me a video that shows how to copy and past either midi loops, or audio, into "Different" sections of a track? I can never seem to get it right, and don't know how to line it up to play correctly in time with the rest of the tracks. I use Sonar Platinum Thanks again for your time, and videos.
@CreativeSauce
@CreativeSauce 4 жыл бұрын
Hi my friend, thank you for watching. Getting parts to line up depends on the situation. If you have snap turned on, then it should work well, but only if the clip itself starts exactly on a beat. If it doesn't, then what I tend to do is drag the beginning of the clip to the nearest bar or beat, before copying, and then paste it to a beat. The key is to have snapping on. Now, all that may not make much sense, so I think it may deserve a video of its own!

When I import a MIDI file, the program immediately assigns its own VSTs. How do I change them to the VSTs I've downloaded? Right-clicking on the track number would seem to allow one to change the VST, but it doesn't. There must be something more. Can you do a video on importing MIDI files, then changing the VSTs. Thank you

Question- Are there advantages/disadvantages to where you keep your plugins, VSTs or any recording software? I have 1 SATA SSD drive installed in my PC desktop. Most of my programs for the entire computer get installed there by default. I also have 2-3TB external drives....One I keep for pictures, and other personal documents & the other I keep most of my media on....ITunes Library, Live recordings of shows on my X32, samples and audio loop , Audio books, Movies etc.... I have started keeping VSTs, plugins and software pertaining to recording on there as well. Since I've started doing that Cakewalk seems to take much longer looking for plugins when it loads. I have them scattered all over the place and in my opinion I've made the file paths too broad.....So I want to go back and contain it all in one place for Cakewalk to look when it opens. Does the Cakewalk install HAVE to be on the internal C drive? Can I drag it all over to my media drive.....would that be ideal? Also do I have to uninstall everything I want to move & reinstall it in its new destination .....or can I just "Move To" everything to one of my external drive from the File Browser? When I open Cakewalk my System Memory Usage under Performance is at 39% and it seems to me that sometimes Cakewalk goes into "Not Responding" often.....It usually comes right back if you give it a second....also sometimes there's a lot of crackling and glitches with very little (a couple of different tracks, no FX maybe 2-3 Virtual instruments) going on in a session. I appreciate any insight anyone has that might get me running any smoother. SYSTEM- WIN 10 Pro 64-bit, Intel Core i7 4790@3.60Ghz, 16GB Dual Ch DDR3@798Mhz

Hey Mike , let me start off by saying thank you for all the great info . I'm a professional singer of almost 40 years but new to the digital recording process. I absolutely love Cakewalk. I have pro tools but prefer Cakewalk. I've been recording for a couple years now I've come so far in that stretch and I owe a lot of that to you . I recently purchased all the Fab Filter plug-ins but I'm not sure how to get my VST presets installed in them . Is there a simple technique to loading them into the plug-in . Some of my plug -ins in my arsenal have them and some of them don't. None of the Fab filter bundle loaded. The plug-ins themselves work great but I would definitely benefit from a starting point with the presets . If you find the time to reply that would be tremendous. Thanks again.

Great video and very well explained. I am new to Cakewalk and just downloaded 11 free plugins. (Most of these were recommended by a friend). Right now they are located in my Download Folder on my Laptop running Windows 10 with 16GB RAM and two hard drives (an SSD Boot Drive and 1TB D-Drive). Can I just copy the plugins files from the download folder to my D-Drive and put them in a folder that I will create for VSTs. I think I will follow your idea of calling it MyVSTs on my D-Drive. Or, must I install them (one by one) by clicking on the plugin name from the download folder and then designate the destination folder on my D-Drive? (MyVSTs). This seems more logical now that I am thinking about it based on what you say in the video.....Thanks. I gave you a Sub too. Well done. Phil

I found the culprit and a solution. VstScan.exe trips over one of the newly added plugins and it can't finish the scan (apparently some Cubase plugins are likely to cause that - as I learned from an old forum post, from before the BandLab days). The VstScan.exe process keeps running even after you've closed out of Cakewalk. So you'll need to disable any new plugins, close the application, kill all VstScan.exe processes in the task manager, restart the program and then you can enable the plugins one by one and find out which one is causing the trouble this way.

What software do you use to download the VSTs? I used up my 30-day freetrial for Winzip. Is there another method or software that is free? Thanks, Mike!

How to fix disk warning when using cakewalk home studio?

I have downloaded and installed a plugin called Tal Reverb. It is my custom folder on my D drive (the folder was added to the folders Cakewalk will look in for new plugins), but it still does not show up, nor is it excluded. There are many plugins in my custom folder that cakewalk does see, just not this one. There's one other plugin by Flux Audio that Cakewalk does not see as well located in the default Cakewalk folder. Any suggestions? Thanks and you have really informative videos. Thanks. Phil

Hello Mike, I really appreciate your videos. I am a long-time Cakewalk user. I have quite a few plug-ins that were included and installed with upgrade packages that I purchased from Cakewalk in ancient times before Cakewalk was taken over by Bandlab. At any rate, I have recently purchased a brand new hot-rod computer and I would like to install some of these plug-ins (such as the Nomad Factory Stuff) on my new machine. I don't have access to the installation files anymore. Can I just transfer the .dll files over to my new machines' appropriate VST folder(s)?

Can you help me out I have kontakt player and I want to run a piano vst live and record the direct vst sound through the audio channel. I can't for the life of me work out how to do this. My midi controller will simply not register on the audio channel as soon as I add kontakt to the FX my controller just stops working with why is this happening? It works fine without it and also works fine on midi channel but I can't get a audio track out of the midi channel it's so frustrating please help.

Is there such a thing as a midi guitar instrument I can install for Cakewalk? Studio One 6 came with one but Cakewalk doesn't find the vst for it. I have tried to find a free one all over the internet but all I get are audio FX plug-ins. Sure I can play a guitar into an audio track and filter it with an Fx but sometimes it's easier to use the MIDI keyboard. The built-in Bass can't get the right tone for a regular guitar, it has too much low end. Does anybody have a clear direct answer other than "try this website," that only has fx? I would love to just stick with Studio One but it seems the version you get when buying the hardware is only a 60-day trial version, which is kind of useless because by the time I learn how to use it, the trial will be over.

So I am having this issue where using my keyboard as a controller or clicking on the keyboard that comes up with the controller doesn't produce any audible sound. I can see that the controller detects the key movement, but that's all it does. If I click use the small keyboard that opens on the side of spitfire audio I can hear it. I can record using my keyboard but cant hear sound whilst I do it yet I can see it recording and hear the playback however clicking on the piano on the side of the app whilst recording allows me to hear it but dosn't record. So last time I used this I just down loaded it and it worked so I have no idea about this. Have gone though many forums and found no fix. I might try delete and reinstall everything again. Any thoughts anyone?

I managed to instal the trial of Serato Sample and it shows in the plug in manager under vst instruments but it doesn't show in my actual plug-ins and I can't find any way to open it. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get it there or actually open it? Thanks.

What I'm having trouble with is selecting VSTi's that have been organized and saved in a custom Menu Layout. If, for example, I have a simple instrument track with a synth and want to change it to another I can right click ans select "Replace Synth". However, at that point I can only select: "Sort by Category, Sort by Manufacturer or Sort by Type". Why can't I select my saved custom "Synthesizer Menu"? How do I access my custom menu layouts? Also, is there a way to display custom Menu Layouts in the Instrument Browser pane instead of the Cakewalk default organization types? I've seen a video that shows that Audio FX custom menu layouts can be selected by right clicking in the FX area of the track but that doesn't seem to apply to VSTi's. BTW, I never save VSTs or other data to the C: drive. That all is stored on another hard disk, which gets backed up to a NAS hard drive. The exception is a few VST3's that are located in the C:\Common Files|VST3 folder. Usually, VSTs can simply be moved at will, there is no registry entry. Of course the Cakewalk VST Scan path(s) must be set to any and all folders that contain VSTs. I really dislike vendors that make you "install" VST's. They should just be unpacked .dll or .vst3 files, with associated files and folders if any, that can be located anywhere the user wants. Only standalone synthesizer apps should be put in the C:\Program Files folder. Late note: I just figured it out! The problem was that Cakewalk has a default folder location for Plug-In Menu Layouts. Once I set the path (in Preferences) where I save my Menu Layouts (on my data hard drive, not the C: drive" I am able to access them and that layout is now the one displayed in the Instrument Browser pane. Hurrah!
