Maybe I am missing something here. This is the third "how to" / Features of Studio One 7 I have watched and I am still unclear how the Advanced Tempo Detection is useful to a song. In the examples given, additional instrument recordings will be forced to "lock in" to a fluctuating midi drum track/tempo track? How is this helpful? I can see if this put the audio track in time with a fixed tempo and it then could be used as a scratch track for the rest of the recording, but to me this feature isn't useful. To automatically put the audio track (not recorded to a set tempo) to a specific tempo, I use Ableton to "WARP" the audio track (automatically) then output (with a click) to StudioOne 7 and presto! I align with the Studio One tempo / click rack and now I am ready to add the rest of the tracks with the original audio track aligned to the designated tempo for reference. (or perhaps to even leave in!) Set me straight if I have the purpose of this feature wrong. I'm just a drummer and may be missing the point.

How well do they stay in position on your head especially when looking down? Mastering gear is often times positioned almost vertically in front of you. Do they slip if you start to nod your head forward?

Hi Mike, can I hit you with a question? I have an issue with gain staging. I have tried three different meters. Youlean and two different VU Meters. If I hit the 0db on VU Meters = -18db, it actually translates in the daw to about -10 to -6db. The plugin is last on the stack, and no other plugins added as yet, or deactivated. Any idea why there is such a difference in the readings? Always love your work. I have learnt so much from your tutorials. Thank you for all your efforts.

I really enjoyed your personal story here, Mike! You are an inspiration. You have overcome so many obstacles and you should be proud of your success. I bought Cakewalk around 1989 when I was at Monash University in Melbourne but, to my horror, my computer did not have the adequate specs to run it (a video card issue, VGA vs SVGA, something like that). I had to put my recording plans on hold until I moved to California as a student where I was able to rent a computer in my dorm and finally use Cakewalk/Sonar. For my day job, was ironically also involved in a ISP/domain name registrar as Director of Training and then a Business Analyst during the 1990’s halcyon days. Around 2018 I finally replaced Cakewalk and its challenges with Melodyne, which I think today has a challenge in getting out its message, incidentally. I am sorry to hear about your struggles with Bandlab. Their attitude towards your wonderful channel clearly was massively disappointing. Still, it was another challenge that you overcame with nobility, skill and, determination, and here you are with 150k subscribers! Thank you for displaying the right way to be professional, both in terms of skill and character. May you have a 150k more followers soon!! Tom - San Diego.

Great review. Question: If a mic is plugged into the back and a guitar or keyboard into the front, will they go into your computer as two separate tracks, or does the 2i2 combine them into a single recording?

The amp for my cube speakers had to be "reassigned" so I switch-in a filter on my monitor bus with a high-pass at 300 Hz and low-pass at 3 kHz.

My Theory: Midrange is the Middle focal point of speakers. This is why when speakers are large or small, the sound is till reasonably audible. I think this method is trying to simulate that effect of different sizes of speaker, but IDK. Like how if you remove a tweeter or a subwoofer, it still sounds reasonably good. I don't use this method; I use location to do it; in/out of the room.

For some genres, low end is more or less important. My own music wants to have the low end that we hear in Trap, R&B, Reggaeton… So when I’m finishing a mix, I shift my focus to how midrange interacts with powerful low end.

Great idea Mike. Similar to mixing on lo-fi Auratone cube speakers. 👍

I wish everyone in the industry would just be honest. Mac’s don’t “just work”. That isn’t true, and we should not confuse newcomers, thinking that they need a mac, or that there will not be any issues ever, if they can just get a Mac. It clearly isn’t true; you can’t even update the OS for at least 3 months, if you want to feel the least bit comfortable that your plugins will work. And even that is not enough time sometimes. And Apple don’t let you downgrade to previous OS for computers released after a new OS release. So if you get a new computer when a new OS is released, you may not be able to actually use it fully for a while. And if you had a previous mac, but it lost out on the latest or previous OS update, you can’t use the time-machine backup to quickly get going. (But here I do think you should do clean installs even when you update, even if you think you are careful, there will always be some things that you could not completely uninstall or an update installed files in a new way and did not clean out all the old things, but in crisis, it is a good option to be able to get the system up and running like you had it, and if you are lucky and things work, be able to use it, without downtime at that particular moment). It is much more rare that Windows causes this kind of issues with upgrades. But since Apple keeps doing it this way, every software developer has to do upgrades and tests every year, and sometimes do a lot of fixing. That drives up the cost of software. And may lead to some software being abandoned. So, that is the first sign that things “just don’t work”. But then you run in to other issues. Windows usually prompts you to restart for installations to take effect. Sometimes they still do, even if you get prompted to re-install. On macs, most of the time you are not supposed to need to do a restart, but I have found that you sometimes do. And with windows it is a habit, whereas when you sit with a mac, it might not come to mind and you sit there just stunned that things don’t work, instead of simply re-starting. The task manager does not clean up on re-boot or even power cycle. If you have software in the dock, you can see a little dot when they are still open to some extent. Typically the software settles down quite quickly, and it will not really use any RAM or CPU, but if it is not completely closed there might be a process in the software that kicks it in to gear at times, like authorization or update controls. One software that has a curious behavior is splice. At first reboot, it just shows the dot. The second reboot it opens up the splice screen. So yet again one of those issues with behaviors. Since you sometimes see the splice screen you might think that if you don’t splice is closed. I don’t know if this happens with a lot of software, I only work with mac some 10 hours a week. It is also confusing that closing the software with the X does not close it. But there are softwares that do the same on windows, but far fewer. But this is just bad design. If they are going to differentiate between minimized as in open but just not visible, and just running in the background, then introduce a 4th button. And I have had issues when for example moving files, and it just doesn’t do it. Without any warning that anything went wrong. I have seen that in windows as well. But it is less common to not get a warning. I do think the OS is quite messy, some things are hidden. And you need to learn special commands. And yet again it is a behavioral thing. With windows, you expect to need to learn some tricks. With Mac, you don’t, and on different OS version you sometimes do, and sometimes don’t, so suddenly you need to know a new trick, or a trick does not work, because they have solved it in another way. But windows is getting worse in this regard. I have never understood having the menus at the top bar rather than the window. I get confused by this all the time. And even my mentor who uses Mac OS all days, sometimes also gets confused, if the window has menus in it, you sometimes forget that there might be options in the top menu. Or you have the wrong software active, and it takes you some time to realize. There is however no laptop to even come close to the Apple silicon ones. Both in terms of fan noise or lack thereof) and in terms of performance. But I don’t like the lack of ports. Some windows “competitors” come with 4 USB/Thunderbolt port, but no charging port, but at least then you can use a multi-port adapter and charge + use that port for connecting things. It would be great if Apple made the magsafe at least USB4 port, so that you could get an external multiport adapter for it. But I also wish apple would add a second display output on their pro Macbooks. Preferably in the form of display port. With desktops there is a debate, if you can manage the sound levels, and you don’t run in to issues with driver conflicts with the GPU, it is possible that you can build yourself a computer that can outperform a Mx Pro/Max/Ultra respectively for less. And the M4 mini just does not make sense in my mind. I have seen so many videos hyping it, but where the maker either say for their uses they need the M4 Pro, and more storage and RAM, or they will just have the M4 mini base model as a backup computer for simple tasks. People don’t typically use desktops anymore, so I don’t get it. If you use a desktop, you are likely to do so, because you need something for particular, that require more RAM and some software installed locally. I get the idea of wanting to recommend something because it seems so good, but there has to be an actual audience for it. People do most of what used to be computer tasks, on their mobile or tablet. Or on a laptop. Windows can be frustrating, and perhaps even more than Mac OS, especially for someone that is new to computers, or coming from another OS. But the difference is nowhere near as many make it out to be. And yes there is the purchase bias, if you spent a lot, in addition to any possible fanboy bias. And there is a lot of industry bias. (unfortunately, a horrible lot in general, that applies the ideas about headphones, cables, microphones, preamps, and a lot more).
@TheJonHolstein3 күн бұрын
Regarding the storage issue. The same thing is true on windows computers, but since you typically get more storage you might not experience it as much. And getting an entry level M1, with 8GB of ram some of the time it is probably memory swapping. (memory swapping is when the SSD is used for RAM like tasks).

Very good explanation. Thank you. I found the practical examples and the measurements the best. I now have a much better understanding of how the compressor works. I would like to see a video in which the EQs are compared and only the aspects that can actually be measured. So, how does Logic's standard EQ filter the signal compared to Neutron, Fabfilter etc.? Is it worth to buy them?

I adore the sound of this plugin, but my tests turned out an undocumented “catch”. You can hear that “catch” in your review too: the “attack knob” is actually an “pre-delay + attack” knob. That makes controlling pre delay and attack far more tedious cause you’d have to turn down the pre-delay knob again when that’s already set to your liking and you decide to go for more attack time later on. Also it makes it impossible to control attack without additional pre delay. It’a not clear from the documentation, it’s not clear in the tooltips either. I wonder if it’s a bug or a feature, but if it’s a feature it’s a missed opportunity in terms of control.

This feels like the first part of a two-part series. So now we've isolated the mid-range - now what? Are we just checking that all the parts sound similar volume? Do we need to make sure that we can hear some bass guitar and kick drum? Even though that means they'll then be very loud when we listen back to the full mix? Or is that where we use a reference track - see how our full mix compares. and then see how our mid-mix compares?
@unclemick-synths3 күн бұрын
I do my initial faders-up mix on the cubes or the monitor bus filter. Then when I go full range I use EQ to bring the low end and high end under control as necessary. Then I start refining the mix.
