"What just happened?" Exactly! Cakra happened. We were all in awe when we heard his "opera" tones the first time. He took us all with surprise! What a wonderful artist, and what an incredible performance. For me there are still 8-10 performances I appreciate just as much. My favorite is his version of "Anyone". I loved your reaction! Yes, I do wonder about what is going on in his vocal folds, and about the tension in his larynx and pharynx, too, when he belts. It feels (and looks) like there is a lot of tension there. I also agree with you that the high pitch part is probably a whistle tone. I believe it is quite possible to produce a 'clean sounding' whistle tone (or at least one where any distortion is masked) even when one has lack of total vocal fold closure during regular phonation (e.g. Mariah Carey's whistle tones). What I'd be really curious about is: a. his speaking voice, b. his singing voice 'stamina' (I will look to see if there's him on a concert?), and c. how he is after singing. His musicality is awesome, no question about it. And perhaps I'm totally off here, as I do not know him at all, but I admit a worry about the health of his vocal folds, at least over time. Fun reaction, Christi!!!

maybe i can help u a little, a. his speaking voice kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2jdp6OKpqaLrNk & kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYSlgJZ6oql7la8 (presscon for his concert next month) the raspy is still there, even more raspy in his early career. b. a lil bit difficult to find his full concert in high quality sound, but i found this (this is before pandemic) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZWYlqaOi9t8p5I & kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoXcgHWjqreZg7M (his virtual concert) he usually singing 8-15 songs (i think), and he will sing 22-25 songs in his concert next month in KL Malaysia. no need to worry about his stamina coz his song mostly ballad and he's doing this for a long time. about his vocal health, he said he check up every month to make sure nothings bad happend. and u right about his musicality, he is awesome, no doubt.

Please react to Rise Like a Phoenix, a cover of the Conchita Wurst song from Eurovision. It is powerful and emotional. Cakra has done two versions; I think the version he does in the studio is the most recent and the better take. As for his voice health, I read that he was turned down for the Indonesian version of one of the singing competitions because his voice was too raspy. He's been singing since he was about 15, so his voice may be naturally that way. Whatever, he is my favorite male singer and I will listen to anything he does. You might want to check out some of his duets as well. He has strong, graceful hands. I enjoy watching him gesture with them.
