What's wonderful is that the chorus in French means "I love you" and that the crowd instead is singing "We love you" and Lara normally would belt this song much louder, but instead chooses to sing more softly around the crowd and for the chorus she waits for them to say "we love you" first and answers them back with "i love you", so she is delaying her phrase a bit for the crowd, so she is basically adapting her vocals on the fly to not impede the crowd's involvement... Pure genius!!!

I was there the night this video was taped. Before the show, a delegation of fans when to see the pianist and the musical director to arrange the whole thing of all signing the song before Lara does so. They agreed to that proposition. And as you saw at the beginning, Lara was in no way aware of that situation and graciously followed with us.

Lara Fabian is a warm hearted, very emotional singer, who has the capability to put all her emotions in a song. In a very dark time in my live I watch a lot of videos on KZbin and found her interpretation of Serge Lama‘s song „Je suis malade“ without subtitles. Btw I am a German guy and don’t speak French. I know a few words and phrases only. So I understood the title of the song, but not the whole song. I never heard and I think I will never hear such a song with so much emotions, that I could feel these emotions physically. And it touched my heart. Short while later I found the video with french and English subtitles. And now I understood the whole song and it affected me more. A few days later I found the video of her concert in Paris 2001. I searched for the German lyrics on internet to understand this song too. Also I heard, that her fans didn’t sing je suis malade. So i searched for this video with subtitles and found it too. Thanks to babelfish(a translation site) I understood everything. The result was: It healed my sick and broken heart. Due to her and her fans I am nearly healthy again. Since this time I am a great fan. Later I wrote, that she was in the same situation as me and her fans showed her the light of the life. THANK YOU TO ALL OF THEM

my sister was there and i must tell you what happened . as someone already told you Lara was having a very tough time. the fans knew it and some of them went to meet Lara's artistic director that is also the pianist here. they told him what they wanted to give her. He agreed. My sister didn't knew anything about it at this moment but when she was in the crowd before the beginning of the concert there in the public an information was circulating quickly and seriously and then my sister was told (as others) to be ready at signal to sing :"Je t'aime" for Lara. Now about the beginning of the video. Lara take position and the pianist starts to play the little intro... then he stops playing just one measure before Lara starts to sing. of course Lara noticed it and thought there is a problem ( that sometime happens in live of course). so that's why she didn't start to sing and look at the pianist because he stopped to play. of course that was the signal for public. you see the result of this wonderful ambush.

How amazing for your sister! Thanks for sharing this. I have the DVD of this concert, and I had to look at it again with this in mind. You can hear the audience singing sooner than in this video, and she hears them and puts her hand up to tell her piano player to wait. Which apparently he was going to do anyway 😊. But I love that Lara is the kind of performer who would quickly understand something unique was happening, even if she didn't know what it was. She trusts her audience. And her audience knew that. So incredible.

As someone who attended 18 schools before graduating high school, I saw my share of teachers and most definitely heard the phrase, "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." There's an additional sentence my dad always added, "But those who can teach, change the world, one student at a time." Your ability to articulate singing techniques, emoting through song, and performance analysis provides an excellent translation for those of us who can't sing and for those wishing to add more emotional authenticity to their performances. 💜

I have to give a little background by this song. Lara Fabian was going trough a very difficult time personally & professionally. Because of this, a group of her fans decided to surprise her and sing her own song to her. And the whole stadium chimed in. Can you imagine that maybe 10.000 fans singing your song to lift you up? "Je t'aime" means I love you, but her fans sing to her "on t' aime" and that means we love you. This singing for her by her fantastic fans; made her very emotional towards the end of the song. Absolutely magical and touching to see how this crowd was lifting her spirit up by doing this. Later she said that because of this: she knew that life was worth living further!

What really gets me is the very last line of her lyrics, "tu vois, je t'aime comme ça" - "you see, I love you this way". This whole song is supposed to be a love song to one person, it's a love declaration to you, singular. But at 9:32, she can barely suppress a smile/chuckle when she instantly turns you, singular, to you, the audience, and she shows that everything that had happened during the song is exactly the way she loves her audience.

you could see the moment, when she realized, that the crowd is singing 'on t'aime' , we love you, (about 4:40 in this video) and loosing it there, crying through the rest of the song, while making a sing along into a dialogue of equals. That was a magic moment.

I just wanted to say that she's not just a vision, she's more like an angel. That woman have had an extraordinary destiny, with a lot of struggle. The way she uses all that to deliver such beauty, is just showing up the best of all mankind. She is a transcendence, like some kind of meaning. The worst, and I am saying that as French random man, the worst is that, at some point during her career, some kind of people, you know, the well thinking ones, just started to mock her, not just mock, be cruel with her. And this cruelty was spread through mass media, just imagine how hard it must be to one day be at the top, and the next day, being insulted, without any reason. This was seriously a very uncomfortable time for people observing what was going on. Because to a point, people started to be ashamed loving her, and that is not a fake story, this is all true... She sometimes talk about a woman who once told her, "I love you, but I cannot tell it". How, and why some people, could try destroy such a person ? For years she actually thought about that, she doubted herself, but then she released another album and sold 100k units the first week. Showing them, how wrong they were, she truly is a form of living martyr, a messiah. And yes totally agree, she's so beautiful, there is this little something about her, a mystery imbuing her character. Thing is she's real, she's the demonstration, that you can reach greatness by being true, by being kind, and caring about the others. She's actually telling, just by existing that, it probably is the only way to reach greatness. And that's why I believe the well-thinking ones, tried to destroy her.

The parisian public is known to be one of the most difficult publics in the world. Once you are accepted in Paris, you know you will be accepted in the rest of the planet, and if the public loves you, it will tell you directly with no shame, like a smash in your face. That's the case here, the whole crowd just expresses how much it loves her. They even transformed the lyrics into " on t'aime", we love you Lara! Lara receives all this loves in her face and we can understand how much it can be emotional. When the public started to sing, a girl said "c'est pour toi Lara" =this is for you Lara. In response, you can see that she is addressing the words of the song directly to the public " je t'aime". Pfffeeew !!! What an emotion, that we can also feel! Once you have seen that in your career, you can die! Lara is the only one that can give us such chilling moments and she is also the best singer in the world, just listening to her interpretation of Caruso or Je suis malade!

What makes it special is that it is a love song that is meant to be sung for the audience, but as the audience then sings for her, which then shows a mutual love between them. True love. And that honesty from the audience and Lara touches me. A once in a lifetime experience that we have fortunately been allowed to experience. How must it not have been and be in that concert hall when so many years later we can be as moved as many of us have become, by and watch that video.

It's really beautiful how she puts a - personal and emotional layer - on top of it. Big Kudos to the piano player as well. He picked it up perfectly, while being surprised as well. This is such a wonderful moment. A tear jerker coming form an 62-year old coot. It bl$$dy hell is. I'm old enough to have disliked her (Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, ... not exactly Lara :-) ). Anyway (think what you like, just keep the Boo-word to yourselves). I actually saw her live several times but could not appreciate what a story teller she is. I stand totally corrected ....

I've read that her fans arranged their singing with the musicians backing up Lara. The audience, approximately 6,000, was aware of her life struggles at the time and wanted to support and show her their love. Truly the most inspiring performer/audience interaction that I've seen in my 76 years.

Hello Christi! From what I have heard, during the chorus of this song, Lara was singing 'I love you' to the audience, while the audience was singing 'WE love YOU' back to her. Certainly a special moment. (Edit: Just saw the end of the video, and realised you already know this, but I'll leave this comment up for those who don't know what it means!)

From the beginning, I believe that Lara is afraid to do something that would break the magic moment but guided by her delicate intuition, she finds the best way as highlighted by Christi... Then at the end, she advances to the edge of the stage... She is just enjoying the audience as she is not really able to think, overwhelmed by emotional sensations, but positive... and then finally she totally relax.

Lara's amazed look is once in a lifetime just to see. When she starts up, she sings gently so as not to discourage them. They have become her choir. In the beginning she is CONDUCTING with her voice, NOT performing with it. That's something that she is not used to doing at least on stage. As she rises and realizes they are not stopping... She then rises and falls to highlight them for what they are doing well, and lead them where it's difficult. At this point she's MOTHERING them. Which is even more incredible. Then in the end she is consoles by them, almost crushed under the love. Beyond belief really.

Great reaction. I'm Swiss. The French audiences are something else. I have seen Mylène Farmer 3 times (2009, 2013, 2019) and on "Rêver" of hers' the same happens... often Mylène asks the public to sing it again at the end. Lara is amazing! And she seems like a really wonderful human being too.

Lara Fabian was for a long time an underrated singer and now I’m happy that musician/artist/singer likes you showed and comment about her unique ability to sing a song directly in our heart. I totally agree with you, she’s an underestimated jewel. I’m French Canadian and I know very well Lara Fabian as a fan and I share the same culture as her and I think the French culture and language create unique artist like Lara. Many French Canadian signers had a very strong and emotive voice like Celine Dion, Ginette Renaud, Marie-Denise Pelletier (the amazing song Tous les cris les SOS) and Isabelle Boulay. Also, I am very touched about your comment about people that rant you about the fact you are do coaching instead of being famous as a signer. I’m totally disagreeing with these people. Personally, I started to learn French horn very late in my life and now I’m playing French horn in an amateur orchestra. You don’t need to sing like Lara to be a good coach like I don’t need to be as good as Stefan Dohr to share my experience as a French horn player. Your song comment and analysis are always very well structured and so touching. So thank you for your sensibility and honesty!

Hi Christi. Cannot wait for this one. Have you never reacted to this one before? Can’t believe you haven’t. I’ve read some silly comments to this performance of Lara, so in order to avoid any further misunderstanding I’d like to give a little backstory. The concert was conducted in Paris back in 2002. That period Lara was having a very challenging time in her life both professionally and personally (she ended up her relationship with French singer Patrick Fiori). The fans were singing “On t’aime” (we love you) to Lara and Lara was singing “Je t’aime” (I love you) back to them. So I guess it’s hard not to get emotional when you have thousands right in front of you, that have been so touched by your music and expresses their love and support in a very special way... ❤️

Not only because you are so intelligent and knowledgeable, but also there is this human quality about you of having this amazing sensibility of, just like Lara, expressing emotions with such a clarity and quality and divine grace! What is most touching is that instead of singing “Je t'aime = I love you” the fans sang “On t’aime” which means « We love you ». A delicate attention especially in the period she was going through. A few days before this concert she divorced Rick Allison, her husband and father of her daughter. And I'm glad that today (even though it's 21 years later) the English-speaking public has discovered her and her immense talent. Because unfortunately she was regularly put in competition with Celine Dion (by French speakers especially when she moved to Canada). She is well known in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Brasil and Argentina. And a little in Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. I'm really glad she's starting to get the global recognition she deserves.

She broke up with Mr. Alison years before this concert and they were never married. And her daughter is born years later. There was no divorce or break-up, it's just a myth invented to give a romantic touch to the story. Why, I don't know.

Dear Christi, As I sit here watching and listening to your commentary on the upcoming 1st anniversary of my bride’s passing, I am at once totally grief stricken and comforted by your words. Notwithstanding Lara’s undeniable musical and performance abilities to bring us on a journey, it was your words at the conclusion that provided an unexpected comfort and calmness, which I (and so many others) thank you. Your vulnerability, honesty and compassion have somehow lifted me in this very dark time of life. This is the greater moment in Lara's career i believe.. the peak.. the top of the Everest.. the Olympus or what ever you want to call it. This is the moment every single artist in the world dream of and i haven't see many reach it (i haven't see this happen to anyone else actually). Think of it.. she starts study music at the age of 8 and to reach that level you need to practice every day for endless hours, think the pain the frustration and the sacrifices she did all these years to reach it. Lara is not only singer but also the writer of this song (as many others). She is very frustrated at the time due to personal problems and the criticism she gets at that period. Her fans knew about it and they wanted to express their love and support to Lara. At the right time the right place with the right song (Je t'aime) a group of Lara’s fans approaching her pianist and musical director Pierre Grimard before the concert and agreed that they 'll begin to sing the song "Je T'aime" before Lara, they change the words "Je t'aime" (I love you) to "On t’aime" which means (We love you) and the magic happens. Lara hasn't got a clue of what happens, look at the begining when the pianist stop playing she gets surprised and turns her head to see what's happening. The surprise gets bigger when the fans start singing for her and after the first "on t'aime" she can't sing, the emotions are very strong and she fights to keep her tears. This is the moment i believe she realises that all the pain the frustration and the sacrifices she did in her life was worth it, that this is the top an artist can reach in his life. Money and fame are importand but are nothing compaire to the feelings she got at that time and she realise it at that moment. I can't imagine how she felt and what was crossing her mind at this moment, her song she didn't even know if people 'll like when she wrote it become the most importand song of her life, a priceless moment for her and her fans. On t'aime Lara.
