Glad you mentioned the old trick of trying to fool the eye with food heaped on a small plate. Like you, for sanitary reasons, I don't want food that I'm paying for to fall onto the table. I unfold napkins to go under my plate to cover enough of an area that falling food would land on the napkin. Is it any cleaner than the table? Who knows, but at least whatever gems are there are not as fresh/potent as those on the table. 😊

Yes, bigger plates would be much more convenient to eat off of because the food items are all stacked on top of each other. And putting the napkins down is a good idea.

Been going there for 40 years or more (when it was actually just a hut) you would just walk up to a window and order. It never disappoints.

I lived down in Myrtle Beach for 16 years and we went to the seafood hut once or twice a month. (depending on how often we were up that way) I was shocked to see it as a real dine in restaurant. Back in my day it was just the walk up window to order and you ate at the picnic tables outside with paper plates. You can ask for an extra plate to put your ketchup and fries on. Its not the ordeal you're making it out to be. Another good video y'all! It looks like you've been all over the place so I'm going back through your library of vids checking out some of my favorite haunts and some new places I want to try out. Great channel!

Now you guys are in our neck of the woods. We live about 75 miles west of calabash nc. My family & I have been eating at those different restaurants in calabash all my life. We love the seafood hut as well. I’m like you I love snacking on hush puppies while I’m waiting on my food as well. I totally agree the plates are definitely too small at most of all those restaurants down there. Don’t feel bad brother, I’ve tried getting into someone else’s vehicle more than once lol. I appreciate y’all’s honesty on all your reviews. 👍🏻🙌🏻😋😋

im 82 years old , I was gping to calabash since i was a child , rhere were no small calabash scrimp , water wasn"t poluted then . you could order steamed scrimp or steamed oysters ,all you could eat and scrimp and oysters were extra largethen oysters were kept in water side untill you ordered , all you could eat for $1.25 per person . now when i go to calabash for lunch i almost always eat at the Seafood Hut very good local seafood and hushpuppys don"have sugar added . lot"s of newer places buy seafood from venders and who knows where they sourced from . iv"e lived in the mountains of ashe and wikes county for many years while having a house at shalotte point N C ' kept a net boat there so i know a lot about seafood , visit Inlet View Resturent at Shalote point family owned 50 plus years , fablous view on inland waterway across from Hoden Beach and view of Ocean Isle . Resturuant is has four levels with elavater dockside boatslips . my favorite place to go ps: live music on wee ends .

I can walk there from my house! I actually like the Waterfront Seafood Shack that is right on the Calabash River between Nance's and Dockside restaurants. Great views and food. They own the fishing boats and there's always fresh seafood!

Oh that's funny! I tried to get into a black Honda pilot just like ours! Love seafood Our Costco in Florida has Lobster tails and Crablegs. We also have access to to fresh caught shrimp. Yum. 😊😊

Yes, we have no complaints about the food. It just leaves us scratching our heads, why they pile everything on top of each other on that small plate. And why they don't bring the hush puppies out first.

The Seafood Hut was my first Calabash experience like 40 something years ago. The line was wrapped around the building. One of my favorites is Hurricane Juel's in Little River.

They definitely need platters instead of those small plates. I guess they do the small plates so it appears to be alot of food,like you said. When you walked up to the van to get in out of the rain , I was thinking did they drive two vehicles down for some reason because I saw Shawnasi's Charger from the window seat yall had . Quick story, Ginger's relative actually got in an identical van and it started with the key. She didn't think anything about it until she looked around for her sunglasses and then noticed this wasn't her van lol!

Oh, wow! That's hilarious. Imagine getting into the wrong vehicle and the key actually working. I'm just glad that whoever's van that was, didn't see me trying to get in it. And they could have, because the restaurant is small and everyone has a view out the window. I don't know what happened to me. I just saw a van that looked like ours, and I momentarily forgot that we had driven her car.

The Coleman family owned both Coleman's and The Seafood Hut, the Seafood Hut started out as a small to-go place and then turned into what you see today, and Coleman's was a big seat-down place, they had some things on the menu that did not on the other places menu, for example, The Hut had seafood sandwiches and they are the best in Calabash and I like them served with cheese, slaw in a little cup then I put it on the sandwich and tater sauce. Giving the Hushpuppies with the meal goes back in the history of The Hut and remember it started out simple to go. The bottom line is that it is a great place to eat. The lunch special is very affordable and they have great other things.

No, it was absolutely not you. I'm not even sure what you said that we would have been offended by. You are normally very positive and encouraging, and we appreciate it. Some guy came on there and said we complain all the time, and then he came back with another comment, and said that we would complain if our ice cream was too cold. It was on the Cherokee Grill review, and his comments are now gone. I removed him because he wanted to continue being hateful and rude. The thing is, we didn't even complain about the food at the place. We only told about how bad the parking situation is, and how the restaurant took away a side while charging more. We actually said it was the best steak and prime rib in town. But no, you said nothing offensive.

Another thing about the fries being on top is that fries lose their heat so quickly and that just enhances how quickly they get cold. And I don’t want the juices from the slaw getting on everything else. Thanks for the review.

You make a good point. In addition to the ketchup getting on the food I don't want it on, the fries do lose heat more quickly. Just another good reason not to do it the way they do it.

I would be curious on your (both of you) thoughts about restaurant service/staff and tipping coming out of the covid days? Do you feel it is improving?

I'm not sure if we're answering what you are asking, but I'll try. Since covid, I do believe a lot of restaurants are understaffed. As a result of some places being understaffed, service has suffered. As far as tipping, we try to take several factors into consideration. First, the type of service we received. And also, if a place is understaffed, we try to take into consideration that our server may be doing the best they can, with the extra workload they have on them. We try to differentiate between an overwhelmed server, and a server that just isn't attentive. Fortunately, we didn't experience any problems with our servers this trip.

Ella‘s seafood restaurant burned down. They are rebuilding it. Ella’s also owns the seafood hut. And another restaurant in town.

Ella's is the one that burned down. It was located directly across the street from this place. I'm not sure which one was a sister restaurant, but we did try Beck's Seafood, which is just up the road. I know that Beck's took on Ella's employees after the fire. My sister talks about Calabash shrimp but I have never had it. I never put anything on hush puppies. I guess I should try it-maybe I would like hush puppies than:

Calabash shrimp is really good. It's lightly breaded and deep-fried, and I think the flavor is outstanding. Yes, she likes butter on hers, and I like tartar sauce on mine. You can try it once and see if you like it either one of those ways. Thank you so much for watching!
