calathea ornata problems | crispy tip and dying leaf

Please bear in mind that this video is how I treat my Calathea Ornata based on my home environment. I have no idea if this is the correct way, and I'm not recommending it to anyone or their plants. Additionally, I forgot to mention in the video that I collect and use rainwater on all of my plants.

Tip for watering calatheas: be sure to either use rain, distilled or filtered water. These plants are very finicky when it comes to any salts or chemicals in your tap water (sorry if this was mentioned and I missed it)

Your plant is doing fine! The dry edges is only caused by a lack of humidity! Mine were also doing that.. it stopped when I started misting my calatheas every other day :)

Humidity is the problem. Get yourself a plug-in humidifier, and also mist by hand when you can. The Ornata really is very high on the Diva list of calatheas.

It honestly probably just needs even more humidity ☺️ some calatheas are just more finicky than others and require STUPID high humidity! I keep all of mine right next to my beast humidifier and they do well! But I notice if I allow the humidity to drop lower than they prefer for even a few days, I have a couple calatheas that will throw a fit on me lol. Your babies are beautiful tho! Great video 🙃

Sassy&Succulent I completely agree with this. I kinda diy’ed a mini greenhouse environment and I think unless I keep 60% minimum, they still develop crispy tips. Gonna try to figure out watering next. Such divas!

I bought a ornata and it did nothing but yellow leaves and was also sitting in water for about 2 months. Then summer came around and the humidity is higher and it seemed to be doing much better. I also water it much more as its able to actually take up water and dry out it's soil better. I hear it's a very moody and it's common for it to yellow itself for no good reason. Regardless it is a plant that I have learnt to love.

Max Orsini I agree, it doesn’t look the best if you don’t do exactly what it likes, and that process to figure out its preference is actually very helpful for learning to take care of plants in general

Thank you for commenting. The crispiness was still expanding and the 3 new leaves in video slowly developed tiny crispy tips too. I since moved the plant to a mini greenhouse setting that I DIY'ed with 50% minimum humidity. Gonna judge based on the 4 new leaves once they all unfurl...

yes would love to know your your ornata is doing? Mine also has one leaf with a brownish tip. Mine are generally heavy and lots of pink showing. I had read or saw in a vid that less light can affect the colour. (not enough light = less pink) not sure how accurate that is as I know they need indirect light. Keep us posted

I got this in a 4 pack from the big A store, but this one & the Medallion are finicky. This one is the worst. I’d pass up even if experienced plant owner. 😅 As others have said, they need stupid high humidity, which even near humidifier all winter, it didn’t help. (Seattle winters = 25-35% humidity in home, when plants need 60%).

Viola Bischoff yeah, just four things - the brand I showed in the video, perlite, orchid barks, and horticultural charcoal. If you’re into aroids and epiphytes (philodendrons, monsteras, hoyas, etc), those big-ticket collector items, Kaylee Ellen has a really in-depth video about the mix she uses.

If I trim the brown bits off, will they grow back or will some leaves just permanently have chunks missing? Also if I trim, should I cut into the healthy leaf or into the dry leaf?

No, they won’t grow back. You’ll permanently have leaves missing tips. Don’t cut into the healthy leaf since that opens (minor) new wounds for plants to heal

I also have the same problem, all my leaves are all drying out it’s driving me crazy. It’s been repotted to new soil hoping it will cure and grow more new leaves. Fungus nat turn into very tiny flies.

nancypal Calathea is not a beginners plant , & would not recommend it unless you do your research & understand calatheas natural environment. It’s like saying cannabis is a beginners plants lol

Maybe pot too big for your ornata? I believe they like to be is smaller pot and get root bound then Change to larger pot. They like well drained soil

It'sme It'sme it’s a humidity issue. The ornata stayed fine all summer and fall (very minor tip damage) but in winter it started doing this again. The air in my house got much drier

Natalia Hidalgo your plant will absolutely be fine. Mechanical damage on leaves happens a lot in nature, and broken leaves can photosynthesize no problem

First of all you’ve overwatered, therefore causes furthered water stress to your calathea. The second problem, I don’t see you using a temp/humidity meter, it’s possible the humidity in dry & or low. Third of all, you must use a humidifier. Calatheas natural environment is humid. In regards to nematodes they’re almost visible to the naked eye unless you look very closely & they don’t evolve into worms or anything creepy that you need to fear for your life lol
